Somebody asked me recently, what do you see happening in this younger generation of the church? I didn’t really get much chance to think, but the first thing that came to mind was, “I think people are looking for something real”. I see people wanting more than Sunday morning church and gathering in living rooms with an acoustic guitar just to worship. I see people fasting social media to prioritise real connection with God and with each other. I see people being willing to open up about struggles and not pretend that life is perfect.

I had this chorus come to mind a few weeks ago and rewrote the lyrics a bunch of times as I started to think about different ways it applied in my own life: feeling frustrated with the constant noise of social media, dissatisfaction with Sunday-morning-only Christianity and just going through the motions, and realising my need to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Even good things like ministry can take the focus from the main thing of loving God. So, this song is kind of about all of those things. I want the reality of knowing God, and being his friend more than all the other distractions.

Here's a song about patience. I'm not always good with patience. Even the month-long wait from having finished this song to releasing it was a challenge for me! But I'm learning more and more to slow down. I'm usually thinking far in advance and trying to plan out the future, but God's word reminds us to take things day by day. To trust and depend on God, and be ok with not being in control. I remember doing a study last year, looking at 1 Corinthians 13 - "Love is patient, love is kind..." and realising that God IS love, and therefore everything that's true about love is true about God Himself. He is patient, He is kind. And I started to relate that to the way He loves us as individuals. God is patient with me. This truth really hit me.

I think somewhere deep down I felt that God had big plans for my life, and who I was created to be, and that I wasn't measuring up to that. That somehow I'm lagging behind or not fully walking in all that I was made for, and that God was disappointed or frustrated with me. Maybe you've felt the same way. But I came to realise that's a lie. God is patient with us. God is kind to us. He's ok with things taking a long time. He's ok with us not seeing the complete picture yet. He's ok with mistakes and set backs. And in many ways I think God is more concerned with the process than the finished result. We learn in the process. It's the place we draw close to God and learn to depend on Him. The process is where relationship develops. And so, I'm learning to slow down.
