Ending the year in style, Meanwhile celebrates its 39th release with label head-honchos, GMJ & Matter showcasing a 3-track epic in “EXT 135 / Elemental / Time to Space”.

Artists who have risen rapidly to secure permanent seats at underground dance’s top table, GMJ & Matter excel within the DJ and production arenas. Responsible for some of the most intelligent and atmospheric progressive house music the industry has seen and an ironclad provenance behind them, the Melbourne based duo have been leading lights in their hometown and beyond for more than 15 years. Hugely respected artists in their own rights with over 500 individual production credits each, a century has come within their collaborative partnership.

As such, original gems have included several original EPs for Proton Music, with additional work finding its way onto the likes of Anjunadeep, onedotsixtwo and Balance Music. However, it is on Meanwhile where the Australian duo have joined forces with such style and grace. From 2020’s “Lost on Origin”, “Gauntlet” and “Eldarin” to 2021’s “The Path /Perfect Storm”, plus remixes for Alex O’Rion, Rich Curtis and Roger Martinez, GMJ & Matter have been at the vanguard of modern progressive house as they now return for another stellar outing.

“EXT 135” is a fizzing powerhouse of hi-hat percussion and white-noise fills as immaculately filtered melodies emerge from the rhythmic melange alongside a chorus of expertly woven pads. A gentle vocal cut adds a melancholy vibe as the track pauses for breath at the breakdown before blossoming once more into the second half with ease and trademark aplomb.

Continuing the rich rhythmic foundation of its predecessor, “Elemental” develops a stunning rolling cadence and swung percussion that provides the perfect platform for a warm blanket of textured pads and pulsating melodies to emerge. Redolent in delays and effects, a reverse-reverb vocal chant creates tension and variation while a simple motif holds fort in the background, helping rhythm and melody gel across the track’s duration.

The final track sees “Time To Space” propelled forwards with cavernous bass groove, ticking percussion and laser beam effects. Evolving elegantly, a sustained pad creates an Underworld-esque backdrop from which a chunky synth motif filters into sonic range before being juxtaposed by a glassy counterpoint phrase. Building through the breakdown, the tracks hits its stride once more in the latter stages with an expansive soundstage and metronomic groove.

Illustrating unrivalled talent and craftsmanship, GMJ & Matter once again conquer the progressive house landscape with “EXT135 / Elemental / Time To Space”.

Clubsonica Records opens the spring season with a collaborative single from Golan Zocher and Juan Pablo Torrez. Born in Colombia but now calling Israel home, Golan Zocher has firmly etched his place in progressive house lore. Following a 2016 debut, the Tel Aviv resident quickly found his place amongst the genre's elite, earning play and support from Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J and Guy Mantzur. Releases via Mango Alley, Or Two Strangers, Plattenbank and Proton highlight what has been an eight-year creative swell for this elusive talent. Clubsonica has also been a regular landing spot for Golan, with four originals and two remixes recorded since making his label debut in 2017. Meanwhile, Colombian artist and Clubsonica label boss Juan Pablo Torrez has also compiled an impressive resume since first emerging in 2007. Mango Alley, Plattenbank, The Soundgarden, UV and more have served as landing spots for his progressive creations, while world class DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have been steadfast supporters along the way. Also highly regarded as a DJ, Juan remains one of Colombia's premiere talents, sharing the stage with Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Sasha, Matador, and more. Although both Golan and Juan have built a good portion of their discographies on successful collaborations, the duo have yet to work together. It seems only appropriate that Clubsonica be the home for the duo's first ever joint production entitled 'Cosmic Resonance', alongside a remix from Mike Griego.

Golan and Juan explore emotive progressive house sensibilities on their first joint production 'Cosmic Resonance'. Sleek and energetic throughout, it's a framework of punchy kick drums and undulating basslines which lay the foundation for rolling percussion and emerging atmospheres to unite, in turn creating a strong sense of flow. Hypnotizing arps and tension-inducing overlays take centrestage across the first act, with haunting atmospheres fully initializing the main break. Cosmic and emotive in equal measure, the interlude further solidifies the duo's dancefloor vision, melting down to a quiet calm where ghostly vocals and cinematic swells cleverly-coax, before the groove re-engages for a poignant finale of heartfelt chord changes and a haze of processed vocals.

The well known Colombian artist KAMILO SANCLEMENTE @kamilosanclemente returns to Univack with a new ambitious two-original-track EP.

'Anagram'' is an special Progressive House track, with a super groove made by solid percussions, strong basses, and synth sounds with complex processings and pitch modulations. Maybe this song has less melodic elements  than other tracks by this artist, but it's more exciting an effective for the hottest moments of your sets.

'Orb' is a piece halfway between Organic House and Progressive House. A song that has a lot of melodic and percussive elements, which print a magical, epic and emotional harmony, specially in its breakdown, and a soprano vocal track which makes the different respecting other songs of these genres. No doubt, it's an amazing piece that shows the versatility of this great artist.

An artist with a growing Meanwhile history, Mike Rish returns to the label with a 3rd original EP, this time with the “Akhnaton / Gröv / Cloudbreaker” triple-tracker.

A story that began in late-2021, Mike Rish and his “Beyond” EP ignited a spark that would go on to burn brightly amongst a galaxy of stars on GMJ & Matter’s flagship imprint. Already a regular on such celebrated labels as Kasey Taylor’s Vapour Recordings, Praveen Achary’s Juicebox Music and Guy J’s Lost & Found, the Australian artist has continued to see his distinctive and mature production sound much sought after.

Now returning to Meanwhile for the first time since June 2023’s “GT / Shoreditch Funk / Reka”, “Akhnaton” is inspired by the Amsterdam club of the same name and host of Meanwhile’s debut label showcase at ADE 2023. Full of trademark character, the track is a pounding club floor-filler with white-noise back drop and chugging bassline intent. Full of mesmeric soundscapes, and cascading delays, the track builds in power as subtle melodies are introduced amongst the immaculately placed pauses that help ramp up the intensity. The result is a masterful affair.

Continuing the hefty rhythmic narrative, familiar tropes percolate around “Gröv” like a fine wine. Under a huge, throbbing backdrop of seismic beat and cavernous bass pattern, spine-tingling melodies float across the mid-range before coming to the fore at the extended breakdown. Adding to the sonic collage with a hypnotising off-beat chord motif, the track then drops back into the familiar form of earlier phases as it draws to its conclusion.

The final offering sees “Cloudbreaker” continue to push the sonic envelope with the immaculately crafted bassline extravaganza. Full of percussive intent with shaker-fuelled top-line, a richly syncopated melody captures dancefloor attention, held through a sustained bass phrase at the breakdown. Hitting its straps again in the third movement, the gargantuan groove and luscious melodic interplay break through in a stormfront of club vibrancy and brio.

A force to be reckoned with via another EP chock-full of skill, technique and craftsmanship, Mike Rish excels once more via his “Ahknaton / Gröv / Cloudbreaker” EP.

Prologue — The Sigh that Called Across Orbits

There is a city in the Perseid Flow that does not wait for visitors; it inhales them. Its name in the wind‑tongue is Anhelion, and the maps draw it as a lung‑shaped void, a negative space, because it cannot be built from stone alone. Its avenues open and close like alveoli. Its towers are ribs. Its plazas are diaphragms that rise and fall on a patient schedule that predates calendars.

From the slate edge of orbit, a sleek courier seed drifts down toward the breathing surface, and from it steps a being who is not a traveler in the common sense. Khyre‑of‑the‑Murmurs is a Sibilant, a humanoid from a distant sporeworld where architecture grows and etiquette is exchanged as scents. Khyre’s body is tall and jointed with filaments that flex like reeds; beneath translucent, onyx‑dark skin, pale mycelial veining glows a soft green, glimmering along collarbones and wrists. Four long fingers on each hand end in capillary tips that taste the air. Fan‑shaped gill fronds, thin as paper, arc from Khyre’s neck to the jawline, opening and closing as the atmosphere changes; fractal pupils adjust to blankness and brilliance in an instant. A braided mantle of woven hyphae hangs from broad shoulders, so fine it can slip between atoms when necessary, so textured it records the passing of winds like a book.

Where Khyre goes, a companion follows. Miell is a Scriptmoth, a moth only in silhouette; close, Miell is an angular geometry of silver membranes and jointed light. Each wing is a translucent panel etched with veinwork like circuit diagrams; when Miell moves, the wing‑etchings write glyphs in the air, lingering a moment as luminous afterimages. The Scriptmoth communicates by composing these drifting letters—one word per beat of wing—until the words knot themselves into a meaning the eye can swallow whole.

Khyre and Miell stand at the edge of Anhelion as the city exhales. The exhalation is dry and fragrant with petrichor. The ground underfoot hums. Far overhead, vaults of spore‑light move like auroras. The city’s breath strokes Khyre’s gills and the gills answer—small ripples of pleasure; the air carries a pattern. The pattern repeats, then complicates, then repeats again, an DMT‑clean geometry encoded not in sound but in pressure and drift.

“Eager,” Miell writes in a loop of floating sigils. “Hungry.”

“Hungry for what?” Khyre’s voice is low and unlabored, each word softened by the phenolic resonance of the gill fronds. Khyre tastes the answer before Miell can assemble it: the city is hungry for alignment. Something in its lungs has slipped.

The courier seed folds itself into a brittle pod behind them like an empty husk, and the living gates of Anhelion open, stippled with bioluminescent dots that echo the constellation the city was patterned from. Khyre steps forward, into the thorax of a world.

Following his immense 'West On Mars' EP on Bedrock last autumn, Guy J returns to his own Lost & Found imprint with two absolutely stunning pieces of journeyman techno. Inspired by the classic trance sounds that he grew up to, Guy J has dug super-deep and returned with something super-special. Musical, emotional, hypnotic: both tracks will take you to places you've not explored in years. Gardenstate, for instance, take things very deep. Fresh from featuring on Odd Ones Vol. 1 on Yotto's Odd One Out Imprint with their track Floración, here the transatlantic duo make their debut on Joris Voorn's Spectrum and dig deeper into their craft with two incredibly explorative pieces of fully immersive techno.

Like all the best journeys we start with the 'Rabbit Hole'. At first it seems like an innocuous acid line. Warm, direct, simple. But the more you listen, and the more you dance, the more it opens up. Before you know it, you're swimming in arpeggios amid crisp neon spirals, your mood lifting with every new element.

'Arpology' is a moment of honest euphoria. The duo describe it as an 'arp orgy' as three layers of the iconic synth are rolled out and entwined in a majestic narrative fashion. A homage to the music of their roots and personal foundations, it's a timeless piece that joins the dots between trance and techno with class.
