More essential deep dubs from the Poker Flat stable. Vol. 2 delves yet further into the back catalogue of one of the most important electronic music labels of the last decade and a half, and brings to light another wealth of dubbed-out gems. 

Dubs Vol. 2 revels in the stripped down, tweaked out vibe of the dub mix, and gives as much space to new artists as to more established producers. 

Considering the span of years covered, the 16 tracks sit together perfectly. Martin Buttrich, Trentemøller, Nico Lahs, Donnacha Costello, Gamal Kabar and Steve Bug himself all make appearances, while remix duties are carried out by such heavyweights as Efdemin, Radio Slave, Rib'n and John Daly. 

The quality and attention to detail is remarkable throughout the compilation - swinging through tech house cuts such as David Durango's 'Move with Me', minimal detonations like Patrick Chardronnet's 'Days Like This', or techno soul courtesy of Jay Tripwire, and even space disco via Sebastien San. All in all, these are 16 tracks that perfectly capture the label's long-standing dedication to the dub excursion.

Trentemøller - Moan (Radio Slave's Beat & FX Remix)

‘Days Gone’ is the highly-anticipated return of core Afterlife act and fans favourite, Mind Against. A year after their ‘Solaris’ EP (AL002), the duo of Alex and Federico Fognini show once again why their moving, supremely-produced tracks are held in such esteem.

The title track takes you to another dimension, with a synth line spiralling into cosmic space and drums beating into oblivion. ‘Cloud Nine’, a classy, comparatively-understated cut for the early hours brings the energy back down. Stepping up to remix ‘Cloud Nine’ is Dystopian talent Alex.Do, who strips the sound back and distills the original’s graceful flourishes, completing a high-quality chapter in the Afterlife story.

Adam Beyer took a liking to UK talent Boxia after meeting him in 2016, making his full EP release debut on Drumcode simply a "long time coming" sort of thing. The richly talented duo Mathame featured on the second Realm Of Consciousness compilation and have since been regulars in the sets of Tale Of Us with some sought-after, unreleased tracks. Their distinctive treatment of vocals marks their tracks out instantly, nowhere more so than on ‘Nothing Around Us’, with the cyber voice of the young Italian artist Lyke. The top quality production and original sound continue with the more understated ‘22’ and end with another prime example of Mathame’s vocal work, ‘Fade Into You’. Mathame refine their singular sound on ‘Skywalking’ and a collaboration with Tale Of Us, ‘Departure’.
Following 2018’s ‘Nothing Around Us’ single, Mathame show no sign of slowing down. Their Afterlife Recordings follow up is a dancefloor single of epic proportions, taking the duo further into a realm of their own. Tension hangs off the sliding chords and spacious arrangements. In the case of ‘Skywalking’ it reaches an uplifting, euphoric crescendo, in Tale Of Us’ intro edit of ‘Departure’ the theme goes darker and off-kilter. Denis Horvat returns to Afterlife Recordings for a second EP of distinctive, dancefloor productions.

A year after ‘Modelo’ comes ‘Miracle Of The Rose’, an evocative and authentic development of Horvat’s sound. On ‘Noise’, the vocals of Lelah give way to a stripped-down, reverberant groove. The title track rises with a free-flowing melody before dropping a tough, angular beat. ‘Divin’ is the EP’s deepest cut, before digital only track ‘Royale’ rounds off this diverse release with flair.

Pig&Dan debut on Truesoul with a stirring personal work, while Raxon adds an energetic remix to package.

Pig&Dan possess one of the finest pedigrees in techno and are faithful contributors to Drumcode, dropping their most recent EP – the excellent ‘Infinity’ – in February. ‘Promised’ marks their maiden release on DC’s little brother imprint and has a heart-breaking story behind its creation as Dan explains: "whilst enfolded in sadness we started to write a record dedicated to the loss of my son due to a terrible road accident. The vocal says it all ‘you promised you would live forever’ symbolising that your child will usually outlive you as the parent.”

The track’s lilting organ line makes a haunting accompaniment to the vocal, while tender synths and deep grooves ensure it’s a beautiful, timeless tribute. Egypt’s Raxon, who first debuted on Truesoul in 2017 with the ‘Heliopolis’ EP, delivers a tougher peak-time rework.

One of the most talked about remixes of 2019 gets an official release as Camille Luciani’s stunning rework of The Temper Trap’s 2008 global hit ’Sweet Disposition’ comes out on Renaissance Records / BMG on 13 December. 

Camille Luciani, one of France’s brightest new dance talents, creates a stirring and highly atmospheric update of the Australian indie rock outfit’s seminal 2008 anthem, which has achieved cult status in recent years, featuring in the film ‘(500) Days of Summer’ and clocking over 260 million streams on Spotify alone. 

“I’d been a fan of the band for more than 10 years”, explains Camille, “Their music was always there for me; one day I just decided to give them something in return and chose Sweet Disposition, which is a timeless track that I always wanted to bring my vision to. So, initially it was more for fun than an official release. It was only after sending it to Dougy and Lorenzo - the band themselves - that things began to develop. I’m delighted it’s now getting an official release.” 

The remix takes the listener on an emotional journey, emphasising the brooding percussion alongside clever layering of the blissful vocal. The poignant piano refrain and swirling, intense beats result in a beautiful, yet powerful reinvention, perfect for peak-time dance-floors, which has already received many ID requests on social media. Major support has come from globally-renowned duo Tale Of Us who have played it as their closing track on many of the world’s biggest stages, including Printworks London, Gashouder Amsterdam and Ushuaïa Ibiza, each time receiving a euphoric, ‘hands in the air’ crowd reaction.
