After repeated chart topping efforts on Kraftek, UK duo Spektre return with the darkly seductive vocals of Berliner Juliet Fox. The rhythmic undulations of the groove create the perfect platform upon which Fox's vocals crawl on hands and knees, beckoning the listener deeper into the sonic landscape like some siren of techno mythology, but it's once the listener is fully entranced by her mantric incantation, "I'm Thinking About You....and the things you do to me...." that the Spektre boys unveil the final piece of this modern masterpiece: the hook. Following a recent killer release on Drumcode, Dutch-Chilean techno producer Ramon Tapia returns to his own imprint, Say What?, with the ‘Last Step’.

The three-tracker features two originals and a Nicolas Taboada remix — all tunes are soaked in Tapia’s trademark dancefloor-ready sound.

The title track opens the release  and sets the mood just right with its powerful kickdrums, dark synths and hypnotising percussions. Up next, ‘Plastik’ picks things where ‘Last Step’ left off to enchant us with its deep sound, rich atmospheres and angelic vocals. Last but not least, the Nicolas Taboada remix gives ‘Plastik’ a darker twist, making it the perfect peak-time dancefloor weapon.  

Ramon Tapia will release Last Step via Say What? on December 6.

Drumcode starts 2020 with a sterling EP from genre hero Thomas Schumacher, his first on the label after a long association with Adam Beyer.

No ifs or buts, if you’re a techno fan, Thomas Schumacher holds a place in your heart. His 1997 classic ‘When I Rock’ still gets rinsed, he has a vast body of stellar work on his influential former label Spielzeug Schallplatten, including a release from Adam Beyer, and he continues to deliver pin-sharp productions via his Electric Ballroom imprint, including a scorching remix of ‘The House of House’, the 1994 classic from Cherry Moon Trax. The rework was first played by Beyer at Time Warp and has been a 2019 highlight.

He first contributed to Drumcode in 2018 with ‘The Unseen’, a stirring contribution to ‘A-Sides Vol.7’, setting up a maiden EP with ‘Crimson’. Beginning with the brilliant ‘Feist’, it’s a no-nonsense brain melter, as 303 arpeggios bloom and recede, creating a thrilling rhythmic intensity throughout. The title track ‘Crimson’ is crafted around two minutes of tension-building synths, before a beat finally appears and a rasping deep bassline commands the dancefloor. ‘Anker’ brings the rave with eagle-eye focus, unleashing a wall of fierce acid to round out the pack.

This track is much darker than my previous releases. I returned to some of my strongest influences in music production. The underground scene in Berlin. I traveled there during highschool and a few more times during college. There, I experienced music like I never have before. It was dark, gritty and ambient.  This song does not sound like traditional Berlin Techno.  I made this song to convey the feelings I felt in Berlin’s underground scene, where only silhouettes are seen dancing well past sunrise, soaked in raw energy. The addictive nature of hearing the bass and kick drum booming constantly, propelling me into the night.  Days later, I could still taste the hot air and cigarette smoke in the clubs and I could hear the music ringing in my ears. WELCOME TO BERLIN...
