ØLIC - The Boss [RR189]

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

Carl Cox is an industry figure head whose legacy in music includes his iconic label Intec, which he runs with friend and business partner Jon Rundell.

Techno focused, the new Intec release comes from Nicole Moudaber who is one of the worlds leading DJs and producers. 

Having graced the best known clubs and festivals in the world she is a headline act who has also released music on labels such as Adam Beyer's Drumcode and Pan-Pot's Second State. 

Nicole Moudaber features regularly on Intec and a core member of the labels family of artists, which also includes the likes of Harvey McKay, Sidney Charles, Josh Wink, Dosem and Carlo Lio.

With a wealth of music history Nicole Moudaber is an event promoter and founder of MOOD Records, plus her weekly radio show InTheMOOD it helps keep her ahead of the game.

This sophisticated release has industrial undertones and a raw sound that showcases Nicole Moudaber's underground side, with a selection of tracks worthy of Berghains main room.

Empty Space is understated Techno with sparse percussion and deep atmospherics layered over a prominent kick drum. Dark and eerie with industrial undertones, this intelligent track is like a detailed piece of black and white artwork, where shade and texture are used to add contrast and eloquence.

Be Gone has a menacing lead synth and enthralling offbeat stabs that combine with subtle pads to creature a brooding tension. Dancefloor focused, its all about the breakdown where everything becomes a tornado of sound until the storm breaks and a pounding kick drum emerges.

Young Hearts is stripped back with fast flowing high hats and monstrous synths that bellow like air raid sirens. Adding to the menace are sculpted sounds which weave round the vigorous rhythms of the mechanical percussion that houses the tracks array of sonic components.

Released February 2015 on Bedrock, its been smouldering ever since. Over two years later, Gregor and Bedrock present two precision-tailored remixes that add to the Goliath story. French techno OG Emmanuel Top, a man whose records inspired Gregor to produce in the first place, takes the lead with a 10 minute monolith that doesnt even hint at the riff for the first four minutes. Focusing on the machine funk rhythm of the original and turning it inside out, Top lets it sizzle for as long as possible before suddenly dropping the full musical scope of Goliath on us mid way. Alan Fitzpatrick, a man who doesnt need much of an introduction to fans of mordern Techno, also subverts the original in an equally remarkable way. Allowing himself to be taken in a whole new direction by the pads, a new topline and is added to create an entirely new experience that still instantly brings home the original tones and feels of Goliath. Remixes that build on the original and take it to entirely new pastures: The momentum continues.
