I knew where it was going... In my head I saw all the rebellious sub-cultures that exist in the streets
of america. The Gang'staz , Graff Artists, Skaters, all the different types of Island people, Mc's, Muslims ..because those are the type of people I know an relate to- at least the intelligent ones so,

I salute the positive side of all those things.  That yes there are gangs in EVERY city of america but if you research the principles that most of these gangs were founded on, you would be surprised at the philosophy you find. Nothing is ever what it seems. Same thing with Graffitti. People who don't know the history, just see some scribble on the wall. But the graffitti movement has produced some of the best modern artists in the world , and two of em are my peoples especially Nomzee....thats my brotha right there. So....

Then I tapped into how money is kinda funny for everybody right now. How we still stuck in The Matrix
now more than ever. I swallowed that pill a long time ago...way before the movie. Thats why  sky-scrappers, look like  slave ships to me...just standing up see what I'm sayin? Anyway thats what that song's about. Wait. What was the Question again?

The Rapture

Remember the game "telephone" back in grade school?  The evolution of this song reminds me of a grown-ass version.  Since the guys are usually shy about the artistic process, and I'm often lucky to be a fly (sometimes virtual) on the wall, I thought I'd share the birth of "Never In Your Life."

Artists tend to live out load.  The last time Amir Sulaiman was in the studio he was suffering some heartbreak.  They had a musician friend (who will go unnamed) joining them and soon the conversation between all of them turned to loves lost and the damage done. Anas & friend became inspired and came up with all the music for this song, while Amir found shelter in the other room to reveal the chorus.

Days later, Azeem hits the studio and  . . .
"We made the original CDLU album in 6 days…. This track was one out of 15 that was given to me to chisel out. First, I was happy to do a track featuring Amir because I had been following his work for a while. And I liked the Dub Reggae vibe of the bass. The track instantly placed me in the tropics…some jungle somewhere where fruits grew abundantly, snakes didn’t bite and the women all like exotic flowers “adorned with galaxies, and saturated with the softness of manners…”   If you could only see the picture in my mind!   This song was done IN ONE TAKE. If you listen carefully, you can hear where after the first verse, it's mostly stream of conscious imagery popping up in my head. A poetic freestyle. This was easy because of the pace of the delivery.  My first instinct was to rap in double or triple time on it but. . . . (LOL)"  When I originally told Anas I didn’t know what to do yet on the track, he shrugged and said, “Just talk some smooth sh%* on it.”  I wrote a few lines down and said, “Lets go.”    -Azeem (aka Mark Ultra)
Since I'm cc'd on all RC's emails, I spy that after Azeem's tracks were laid down, Anas mixed it and sent the song once more to Amir.  "Bro, how'd we do?" Amir's was once again inspired and sent a verse as a reply. Anas then once again went back and amend the song to include Amir's sultry addition. There rest is as they say, "History."  There seems to be a interesting Twitter volley between the guys #neverinyourlife. You are welcome to follow them there creme de la ultra.

Never in Your Life - Feat. Amir Sulaiman

What do you get when you mix some bossa nova flavor, an urban griot, an electric guitar, a flautist, a warm Los Angeles night and the secret ingredient? You get a mighty recipe. You get the "Hidden Treasure," the first single off of Baraka Blue's new album Majnun's Lost Memoirs.

"I was inspired to write this piece after reading a book called "The Knowing Heart" by Kabir Helminski. There is a chapter called Love's Universe in the book that really hit me. Helminski has a line where he says, "Love's substitutes are running the world." As I was reading it the lines to the song kept coming to me so I would read a few lines and then write a few lines, then read a few more, then write a few more... It went on like that until I had pages and pages of lyrics.  When I got into the studio Anas and Fred were messing around with some chord changes and as they started to work out the groove I knew right away it was perfect for the piece I had written.Of course I had to edit down the lyrics or the song would have been like 10 minutes long!  So I carved what I had written into three verses. I love the live instrumentation in this song. I also love how the song borrows from so many musical genres, including hip hop, to create a new, original sound."  -Baraka Blue

On working with Hyman Katz

"Hyman Katz and I have discussed working together ever since we realized that we are both gigantic fans of  Paul Horn.  Since I was a child I've used Paul Horn's live performances, recorded inside of different ancient buildings, as a sound track for meditation.  I'd never come across someone else who took those Paul Horn recordings as seriously as I did until I met Hyman.

While working on this composition I found the perfect opportunity to finally get a chance to record with Hyman. When he came to the studio, I immediately played him the melody line of the chorus, which I had recorded using my voice. After spending about 10 minutes listening to the melody on repeat, he stood up and proceeded to play the melody line exactly how I had been singing it.  I know that woodwinds are the instruments that closest resemble the dynamics and intonation of the human voice, but never had I heard them sound as close as I did, when I heard the detailed inflections of Hyman's flute mimicking my voice.

Since he seemed to be gelling with the other music so well, I asked him if he was interested in recording a lead solo track.  He agreed, and the result is what inspired this "Reprise."
