Drum & bass producers and Viper Recordings signees, The Prototypes, will be making their return journey from the Sussex coast for another appearance in Room One at Playaz on Halloween (or Friday 31st October if you're one of the numerophobic few). Exclusive BBC Radio 1 1Xtra Phace guestmix - March17th 2015

One of my most personal mixes. For this one I really tried to go outside the box conceptually - who would have thought to do a fantasy role-playing themed drum and bass mix? Having been a life long Dungeons and Dragons fan, I thought it would be cool to basically let everyone know that I was into role-playing games. And for the intro I was able to lock down the voice of Optimus Prime himself Peter Cullen! During the recording process I was patched into his headphones when he was in the studio and was even able to direct him. It wasn't until later that I discovered he had voiced the character of Venger on the 80's cartoon series Dungeons and Dragons. Awesome! The artwork was once again handled by the legendary Akira Takahashi. One of the coolest parts of the art is the reoccurring image of a dragon which is an exact copy of the dragon tattoo on my back. I always thought Akira was very clever to incorporate that image so deeply throughout the design. Though you cannot see it here, I spent a lot of time working on the liner notes so that they kind of read like stuff you would find in Dungeons and Dragons rulebooks. One of the coolest things about this project was being able to get remixes made of popular non-dnb artists like Tiësto, Sasha, Josh Wink and BT. It really sort of pushed this thing over the top at the time. Finally there is something that needs to be said about one of the tracks on here. The Paul B + Subwave remix isn't of the Tiësto tune "Flight 643". It is a remix of his track "Lethal Industry". I can't remember why this happened in the first place, but there you go! Enjoy :)

The Dungeonmaster's Guide

An artist renowned for his twisted take on the drum & bass spectrum, Phace is a producer whose ethos behind his progressive and technical sound is surprisingly simple. Releasing a multitude of club-ready but intricate and adept d&b, including his third album, Shape The Random, not to mention his collaborative material with good pal and fellow German music maestro Misanthrop via their Neosignal label, you might think there'd be something rather complex responsible for those deep, rolling basslines. But when chatting to the man himself last week it became clear that his meticulous music-making is simply done to make “both himself and others happy”. 

Set to join Black Sun Empire’s BLACKOUT clan in Room Two on Friday 24th July, we caught up with Phace on his theoretical whereabouts since the release of his aforementioned album earlier this year. He also recorded us a 30 minute blast of his blend of high octane cuts to kick off the BLACKOUT branded takeover of our blog space (which'll be running every week in the run up to the show).

UNEVEN STRUCTURE - Funambule

Here is “The Soldier’s Story”, my first truly original cd for the prestigious American electronic music label Moonshine. For this release I was given complete control of choosing all of the music and really went out of my way to find the best future thinking, unreleased and heavy as hell drum and bass at that time. This one was not just for the dancefloor and really started to establish the way I would approach choosing music for all future mix projects. Some of the key tunes on here would be my collaboration with Technical Itch “Atlantic State”. The bassline was born out of a keyboard glitch and the cool pads in the intro are from a Skinny Puppy sample cd. The name was a nod to the classic 808 State tune “Pacific State” (the Atlantic ocean separates the USA and the UK ;). Jonny L “Bellz” was just a white hot smasher that I loved to death. And “The Stalker” was a weird super minimal tune that eventually became the anthem for my drum and bass weekly “Platinum" in Philly (everyone used to love that track!). For the intro I used a bunch of samples from the videogames Half Life and Quake (I found the sound libraries and broke them up and mined the shit out of them). At one point I was contacted by some people who worked on Half Life and they said they used to play my mix at the office. That was awesome. This mix sounds fast because I mixed it on my home turntables that were modified to play faster than normal. I always thought faster was better. The artwork was done by the late Todd Baldwin of Airline Industries. He hired famous Marvel comics artist Paul Gosier to draw me as a super soldier for the cover. Most people didn’t really think it looked like me ;) Finally, I lifted the title from the movie “A Soldier’s Story”. In the drum and bass scene a “soldier” is a die hard fan of the music. That pretty much sums me up to this day. Enjoy!

With ADE looming on the horizon, it only seemed apt for Ram to yet again provide the perfect drum and bass entrée for Europe’s premium dance event. Set to bring another stellar line up from their roster, this compilation packed full of exclusives helps to epitomise the imprint’s legacy within dance music. Including brand new cuts, demonstrating the Ram’s longevity, this album plays homage to two decades of output. 

Leading you deeper into the dark side of 2015, this year’s Ramsterdam compilation not only pedestals the artists who’ve made such a titanic impact throughout the last ten months, but also the emerging talent from sister label Program and Ram’s newest signees. Whether it’s the old school, growling riddim from Aggressor Bunx, or Calyx & TeeBee’s tell-tale, trembling bassline, each track gives the album a unique vantage point.

Featuring on the collosal track listing is Delta Heavy; an exclusive which relays their elevating, pumping composition, it’s a dancefloor banger sure to detonate any crowd. And Frankee also makes a welcomed return, following the release of his anticipated single ‘Downtown’. ‘Raptor’ is unforgiving, snapped up by different animalistic samples and stridently aggressive – pedestalling Frankee’s unforgiving production standards.

Two of this year’s most resounding tracks from the Ram camp, Bensley’s ‘Aftermath’ and Gerra & Stone’s ‘L.I.E.S.’ have also received revamps, providing two anticipated VIPs already igniting sets worldwide. Loadstar also deliver the goods; brand new heavy-hitter ‘Dune’ demonstrates exactly why they’ve become such revered names across the genre.

So, here’s to another Amsterdam Dance Event. One with a soundtrack provided by one of the most enduring labels, and stellar rosters, that dance music has played host to. And with Ram also holding a night this October, from first listen onwards prepare to be immerse yourself in Ram’s vast musical environment.
