Description: I recorded this in the village of Karkax which lies within Hotan county in southern Xinjiang. 9 elderly men all playing large frame drums (dap) and performing an intense half hour of this type of bakhsi ritual music the likes of which I'd not heard elsewhere.

Peripheries of China

Une invitation à parcourir l’Altiplano Potosino, région désertique du Mexique au-dessus de San Luis Potosi, à 400 km au nord de Mexico. Sur ces hauts plateaux à 2000 mètres, le désert est loin d’être vide. On entend les habitants des villages et des hameaux, les bergers avec leurs troupeaux de chèvres ou de moutons. On part à dos d’âne ou en calèche pour aller charruer les champs. Entre cactus et arbustes, des vaches cherchent quelques brins d’herbes. De retour au village, on se retrouve tous à l’église et à la fête locale. Les coyotes chantent en écho au train qui traverse l’immensité de ce “désert” mexicain peuplé de vies et de sons.

Is it possible to recreate the world in sound? The variable geometry idea melds with the variable architecture idea. Cobbling from ruins. Have we ever done anything but cobble from ruins? When I transpose four different locations  and permit them to mingle and dance, I often get the sense of a new world shining through the fragments of the old, swept into a new potential orbit. And for each listener: some thing different. Here I'd like only to say that a sketch of potential future is enough for the imagination. To do more is to impose order, to insist too much on the old politics or aesthetics of meaning. The challenge for me is to think for myself through these sounds. Un petit duc sonne la cloche du village et réveille les rossignols,
Solo de mobylette qui dessine le paysage,
Un bourdon drague un saxophone,
L’eau capricieuse se fraie un chemin jusqu’au vignoble d’un mélomane, 
Le boulanger guette le vent…
Au commencement était le son.

Ah ces poly-sons ! Ils sont complètement tirés par les plumes en saison sèche … car, quand l’appel du parapluie fait un sens averse, c'est une pluie d’oiseaux qui vient fredonner la polyphonie d’Azillanet.

"Goutte que Goutte" est une pièce sonore réalisée par la fusion de 4 gouttes de Belgique avec 5 gouttes de France. C'est une composition de sons glanés dans le village d'Azillanet et sa nature environnante, à différents moments d'une journée et d'une semaine, et aux hasards de rencontres avec les habitant.e.s, les oiseaux, les fluides, les végétaux et les lieux de vie. 
Elle témoigne autant de la diversité des sensibilités de ses créateurs et créatrices, que de la singularité de leur écoute poétique du monde. Ecouter le monde, c'est se relier à lui et en prendre soin, même en temps de pluies, alors coûte que coûte, les micros ont été sortis et les oreilles se sont ouvertes.

Goutte que Goutte

Une balade sonore au ras du sol, enregistrée en binaural par des chiens d’un quartier récemment urbanisé en bordure de Belo Horizonte, au sud-est du Brésil. Les preneurs de son Marmita, Pretinha, Nina, Bob, Frida et Una ont été équipés d'un micro binaural placé au niveau des oreilles. 
Connus sous le noms de “vira-latas” (retourneurs de poubelle), les chiens des rues du Brésil proposent une écoute de leur monde et de leur cohabitation avec les humains. Quand on est chien, on aime fouiller dans les déchets pour dénicher quelque chose à manger, on aboie quand une moto passe, on court après les voitures qui envahissent notre territoire, on se faufile à l'intérieur des maisons et on explore les terrains abandonnés... 
MUTT DOGS (English)
Known as “vira-latas” (dump tippers), stray dogs offer their canine listening abilities in conjunction with human cohabitation. As a dog, you love rummaging through dumpsters, looking for something to eat; you bark when a motorcycle passes by; you run after cars invading your territory; you dash in and out of houses; and you explore abandoned fields. This piece offers a ground level sonic walk, binaurally recorded by dogs in a recent urbanized neighborhood close to Belo Horizonte in Southeast Brazil.

Mutt Dogs

Pendant 90 minutes, le 15 juillet 2018, une grande partie de la planète a suivi la finale de la coupe du monde de football. Nous avons enregistré une soixantaine de radios qui commentaient le match à leur manière, dans le monde entier : Ghana, Mali, Brésil, Argentine, Pologne, Croatie, Thaïlande, Bangladesh, Indonésie et Maroc...
Le traitement sonore du même événement donne à entendre ce qui nous rassemble dans un monde globalisé, mais aussi les différences culturelles qui persistent. Certaines radios entrecoupent la diffusion de publicités, d’autres d’appels à la prière, de dédicaces ou de l’annonce de l’heure locale, bombardant des jingles ou de la musique à la mi-temps.
Dans une époque globalement visuelle, où nous sommes tous connectés via le petit écran et l’internet, écouter la radio semble une pratique désuète, mais le commentateur reste une figure importante pour les amateurs de football du monde entier. Ce collage sonore propose de réécouter un récit dont tout le monde connaît l’issue, à travers ses langues, ses accents, ses rythmes et ses mélodies, sur fond de grésillements et de saturations propres à la radio hertzienne.

Durante 90 minutos el 15 de julio 2018, una gran parte del planeta siguió la final de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol. Grabamos unas 60 estaciones de radio del mundo entero comentando el partido, cada uno a su manera : en Ghana, Mali, Brasil, Argentina, Polonia, Croacia, Tailandia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Marruecos…
El tratamiento sonoro del mismo acontecimiento nos ofrece escuchar aquello que nos une y nos reúne en un mundo globalizado, pero también las diferencias culturales que persisten. Algunas radios interrumpen la transmisión con publicidad, otras con los llamados del muecín, dedicatorias, anuncios de la hora local, bombardeo publicitario y música durante el medio tiempo.
En una época globalmente visual, donde estamos conectados a través de pequeñas pantallas y el internet, escuchar la radio parece una práctica antigua, pero el comentador sigue siendo una persona importante para los aficionados de la pelota. Este “collage” sonoro propone re-escuchar un relato del cual todo el mundo conoce el final, a través de una variedad de lenguas, acentos, ritmos y melodías sobre un fondo sonoro de interferencias y saturaciones propias de la radio.

Radio Mondial (English)
On July 15, 2018, over the course of 90 minutes, a big part of the planet followed the FIFA’s World Cup final tournament. We recorded around 60 radio broadcasters from all over the world which all commented on the match each in their own way: in Ghana, Mali, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Morocco, among others.
Through the sound-based coverage of one of the planet’s biggest events the act of listening unites people and brings us together in a global sense, but also gives us the opportunity to identify our cultural differences. For example, during half-time, some radio broadcasters interrupt the match with advertisements, while others have prayer calls, personal dedications, the local hour announcement, or simple bombarding listeners with jingles and music.
In global and mostly visual times, when we are connected through a small screen and the internet, listening to the radio seems like an old-fashioned practice, but for soccer lovers the commentator is still a relevant and an important character in their lives. This sound collage invites us to listen to a story of which we all know the end through a variety of languages, accents, rhythms and melodies within a background of crackling and saturation, very common sounds in radio broadcasts.

Carillon de l'église Saint Germain à Paris

I recorded this in at the People's Park in Debao, Guangxi Province, China in 2017. One end of the park was filled with small separate groups of Zhuang minority men and women - each with about 6 members or so. They seemed to be 'passing' and overlapping verses of these songs around the area. One group would finish, and another, several meters away would start. It created this beautifully, soulful, rolling, roaming song. This is an excerpt of a much longer recording.

I  recorded this in 2003 in the town of Aksu in Xinjiang featuring a local style particular to that area with each woman strumming a dutar with one hand and tapping a dap with the other.

Aksu - Yuregim Qakqak Boldi

recorded in a very remote mountain village named Xuhpu hours outside of Karghlik on 2003. We started recording in a mud walled courtyard and the entire village came out to quietly gather and listen. Rawap on my left and on my right you can see the fellow is playing a western violin upright on his knee in the way a ghijek would be played. You'd sometimes see this around this area. Folks had said that this was because Russians / Tatars had introduced violins to the area many years before but were adopted into local folk music with this playing method.
