It’s been a while since I’ve uploaded anything to SoundCloud. Pre-covid it was easy, just record live and upload about once a month to keep my page up to date. Each of those uploads served a dual purpose, capturing not only the musical soundtrack of that evening, but also a reminder of the night’s experience with the friends I’d see on a weekly basis (or in some cases, a rare night with the friends I don’t see often enough). While I’ve loved many of the livestreaming nights throughout quarantine, and have been thrilled to see/discover friends’ Twitch names in chat, it’s been hard to evaluate what’s “worth” uploading without that in-person barometer to gauge the experience.

As a result the itch to share music had been growing again, but I was lacking in content and opportunities to do so. I hadn’t been livestreaming recently, couldn’t upload my few socially-distanced live recordings, and have flat out lacked musical motivation and interest in waves throughout the last 9 months. So when JD spearheaded another collaborative livestream, the idea was in the back of my head to potentially upload this set, and ultimately I was stoked with where we had gone throughout the four hours.

Instead I forgot how DJing works and didn’t plug my recording device into the mixer, which was a bit discouraging at first. Setting aside another four hours to re-record was a daunting commitment, but I felt this set was a great example of my ideal progression through extended formats. Livestreams open the door to extremes I wouldn’t quite feel comfortable with in a club environment, and allow for tempos, genres, and styles that might not align with a headliner or event’s vibe. While an 11am start time on Sunday certainly influenced more melodic daytime selections, a range of 108 to 130 bpm allowed me to pull from just about every playlist on my flashdrive. Trying to make that range of selections work cohesively together is a challenge in itself, but that challenge provides some of the most fun I ever have behind the decks.

With all of that said, last weekend I decided to take the time to recreate the set. Here’s the lengthy re-recording to correspond with the lengthiest social media post I’ve had in ages. Thank you to everyone who tuned in live, and a special thank you to JD, Yatish, Colin, and Rahul for coordinating and participating in the 16-hour event. I hope you enjoy listening through as much as I did playing it twice.

'Clavis is the formidable production duo of Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann (a.k.a. Urban Absolutes). Having been friends since high school, it still took another decade after graduation until they released their first joint EP on Freerange Records in 2015. Since then the duo has steadily built up a discography based on a "one EP a year" principle and selected remixes for artists like Ane Brun or Andhim. Besides Clavis, they are also involved in the production of several other projects, such as Amberoom, which recently caused quite a stir with remixes by Dixon and Isolée. Clavis live and work in Essen, Germany.'
