After a pair of remixes 7 years apart, Verche now returns with a full debut and his thematic "Riptide" EP. Opening with the 2-part "Metastaze", a robust groove and sustained bassline provide the foundation for cadenced stabs and trilling synth motif to build alongside a glassy motif in a pulsating club-friendly manner. Part 2 continues the bassline theme of Part 1 as a powerfully sustained lead replaces the more subtle phrasing of its partner track. The result is a gloriously dynamic and dramatic piece. "Riptide" continues the melodic themes of the opener as a powerful groove provides the backdrop for familiar motif and driving force to make their mark. Evolving, vocal chants and white-noise infused pads add real dancefloor purpose. Changing the overall vibe, "Surreal" is typified by a chunky rhythm and syncopated bassline. A flurry of melodic elements and effects-laden pads create a bright sonic landscape as the track rises and falls with ease reaching its denouement at the 6-minute mark. The final original track sees "Northern Lights" continue with a vibrant driving character that builds easily across its 8-minute timeframe where counterpoint and carefully patterned motifs jostle for position. Fully unleashed post-breakdown, a huge kick and pulsing white-noise pads drive the track home with delicate melodies cutting through the mix in repeated phrases.

The combined pair of Luke Brancaccio & Gai Barone needs little introduction. A veteran of more than 20 releases on Bedrock plus work for Platipus and Selador stretching back over 15 years, Brancaccio is an iconic figure. Similarly, Gai Barone's 600 plus production credits for the likes of JOOF, Black Hole, Armada and his own Afterglow imprint, have sealed the Italian's place in dance music's hall of fame. First joining forces on a 2019 remix for Dear Deer, the duo's recent work for Selador, Lost & Found and Renaissance has seen them at the top of their profession. Remixing "Riptide", a chest-thudding kick and ticking percussion provides the foundation for a strongly rhythmic melody to repeat hypnotically throughout in dramatic fashion. Making superb use of the vocal phrasing of Verche's original, the remix blossoms in the second half alongside intelligent use of original components.

On the back of a pair of Particles remixes in 2021, Toronto based, Zoi, saw his talent shining through on reworks for To Ricciardi & Dope (PT) and Jayden Klight. Appearances on Flug Lab, Dream Culture and Traum, over a 5-year career, have showcased a penchant for "complex soundscapes and deep melodies", with Zoi's remix of "Riptide" displaying an array of melodic textures and laidback rhythmic foundation. Making clever use of the Verche's original components, a stripped-back interpretation allows for a floating soundscape to swell gently throughout the 5-minute piece as original production and new motifs enter the fray in the second half. The result is an ingenious and highly original new interpretation.

Over the years, Berlin has been cited as Oliver Koletzki's main point of reference and, more importantly, his endless source of inspiration. His albums Großstadtmärchen and Großstadtmärchen 2 are wholehearted tributes of the German capital, as its importance is continuously hinted and charted. Friedrichshain, one of Berlin's vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Oliver's heart. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Kreuzberg's wall paintings adorn Stil vor Talent's cover sleeves and host their headquarters. There are little to no corners in the city that haven't brought a spark of inspiration into the mix. The Schneeweiss compilation series, now at its 15th installment, is built as a form of tribute to all these particles, tied in together into a series of carefully curated tracks. Each compilation stands at the intersection of the musical and cultural surroundings most prominent of their respective times, acting both as a reminder as well as a timeless sound capsule for the years to come.

Definitely one of my favourites from the LP - it came together quite quickly and provides a little light against some of the moodiness of the other tracks. I made the majority of the musical and atmospheric elements from the vocal, using a combination of granular synthesis and heavy reverb. I love hearing vocals placed in big spaces, as it reminds me of the classical choral music my parents played in the house as a child.

Produced in Studio One Professional using Output/Arcade sound libraries triggered with my Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard, various loops, and my guitar work on a Fender American Ultra Stratocaster, played through a Line 6 Helix processor.

Hallelujah, indeed. 

Just nine months after the release of her critically acclaimed 2014 album Runaway’s Diary, Amy LaVere has a sweet surprise for fans – Hallelujah  I’m A Dreamer, recorded with husband and noted guitarist Will Sexton, is out April 7 via Archer Records.
Hallelujah is a sonic portrait. In these 11 tracks, Amy and Will have captured the immediacy of the live show they’ve developed on the road together, reveling in a more stripped-down sound and celebrating the freedoms and limitations that come with it in stunning form.

Recorded to magnetic tape (with the help of engineer Daniel Lynn and longtime band mate guitarist Dave Cousar) in the course of a few afternoons at Music+Arts Studio, the arrangements are lithe and uncluttered, allowing Amy and Will’s disarming harmonies to rise to the top. At times their voices blend so well you can hardly find the place where they split – it’s a dance matched only by the complimentary guitar work of Sexton and Cousar. 

The gems of the album are its new tunes – the playful and evocative “Cricket (At Night I Can Fly)” and “It’s the Thing to Do,” a co-write with Will – plus a new almost sunny take on the macabre “Red Banks,” which originally appeared on Amy’s 2011 studio album Stranger Me and a sublime cover of David Egan’s “Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer,” the album’s namesake.

Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer is immediate and striking, a masterfully played (and curated) mix of old, new and reimagined.
