Kevin J Black is a Toronto based musician and songwriter who walks a fine line between pop music and more experimental sensibilities. A sonic chameleon, his music hops between genres, yet remains tied together with passionate melodies and poignant lyrics.

After relocating to Toronto from his hometown in 2010, Kevin quickly earned a reputation as a textural and melodically inventive guitarist and songwriter touring and recording several records with indie acts Hands & Teeth and Basements. In 2014 he joined sextet Fast Romantics as lead guitarist, and the band recorded two LPs, ‘American Love’ (with Gus Van Go) and ‘Pick it Up’ (with Marcus Paquin). During this time, they were awarded the 2016 SOCAN Songwriting prize and was shortlisted for Reeperbahn Festival’s 2017 Anchor Prize. 

Having accumulated ideas and experiences throughout a decade of touring, 2020 saw Kevin branch off on his own path to write and record material under his own name. Following his success co-writing music that appeared on television, including MTV’s Jersey Shore and Catfish, Kevin deepened his focus on sonic storytelling to work in film. Over the past three years, he has worked on a handful of films, including Bottom of My Shoe Productions’ short “Playing Life” (Las Cruces International Film Fest 2023 Official Selection), Fittonia Films’ experimental theatre/film production “Jusqu’au dernier poil” (2022), and short Taste of a Lie (2023). 

Kevin’s first official solo EP, Mistakes, was released February of 2023.

"I watched Unsolved Mysteries and wanted to intuit what I believed the victims of a Japanese Tsunami might want to say.." says OXLIP about her 6th album, I Said You Must Be Leaving, produced by Damien Jurado. Recorded over 4 days in Sonikwire Studios in LA in January 2022. "The experience was incredible- Damien is a mastermind, and a hero of mine." I Said You Must Be Leaving will be released on OXLIP's own label World Peach Records, September 30th, 2022.
