Reverse Resolution [disquiet0680]

This track came together slowly, organically, over a period of weeks. Finishing is often a fraught exercise and this one was no different. I am thankful for the timing of this week's disquiet junto, and the finishing prompt—it reminded me of this track and helped nudge and motivate me to finally complete it and share it. 

The title reflects the sound. When recording and mixing it, I was struck by how much of its sonic feel reminded me of the early pioneers of synthesis. Rather than move away from that sound, or stop and permanently shelve it, I opted to lean into it and just went with it. It wasn't pre-planned, quite the opposite, it just happened without effort or heavy conceptualizing. Maybe its ease of coming together—nearly fully formed with just a few takes—is why I neglected it, till now, and resisted calling it done.

I didn’t realize I had such a large collection of unfinished tracks and musical sketches from last year on my laptop. For this piece, I used a sequence I created last year when I was exploring the new plugin Tela by Fors.fm. I added additional tracks in Ableton Live using Madrona Labs Sumu and Slate+Ash Spectres.

This assignment was both easy and difficult. Easy because almost all of my music is a more or less spontaneous life recording. Difficult because I usually just save wav. files, so there is no easy way of refining by editing. Also, usually I have no recollection of the process involved whatsoever (it’s not drugs, but maybe age if you’re wondering).

Going through my messy iPad, I found a file named 20240115.wav, so I guess I made this almost a year ago. It sounds like several Plaits voices over a field recording with some glitch effect. To this I live jammed a glitchy beat and some other small bits. So now the track is as finished as it ever will be.

picked up an ableton live session from last year, with a recording from my modular system - notes at the time mention using a matrix mixer for effects sends with feedback, one send to delay and another to beads, with a chord voice going in - revisiting this recording, i ended up layering two slower copies pitched down -1 and -2 octaves and working in some field recordings.

I remember when I started this one year ago I was sitting in a train and in love with Abletons "Operator" FM synth and a mutating sequence on loop. There was no bass at all, because I had bad simple earphones and in the train I was only able to hear the high bells.

Honestly, everytime I listened to it, I thought "This is enough, you don't need more, I like it how it is.", but at the same time I felt guilty, because it was very simple. That's why I never finished it.

To finish the track, I quickly added a bassdrumish sound with Puremagnetik Foomph and added some droney pads. Now I feel guilty again, really like a cheater, because it is still very simple, but now it's finished and I like it.
