She watched, eyes wide, body frozen in place, looking across the fractured terrain at her orb-encased lover, as the creature who would have been her death fell away behind him into the great nothingness below. His eyes locked with hers for a brief moment, even from that distance she felt the recognition and it cut through her, melting her fear and the fresh memory of entrapment on the path to her own end. She felt the gaze break, as his head twitched upward and he started to drop fluidly sideways to the ground below, taking with him a part of her… a piece of her soul cracking and falling away like a glacial iceberg into the pit of her core. She was running, hair flowing behind her, tears streaming across her face as she crossed the distance, breaking apart in time as her heart bled into the fibres of her being. Down on her knees, straddling him.. holding his face as she watched life depart him. A single word… ‘live..’ spilled from his dying mouth and with that, he was gone. She cried out, holding her dead lover in her arms, soaking his body with the wet salt of her tears, holding her saviour… her people’s saviour. The others, coming to terms with their changed fate, gathered around her, placing their hands upon her back, holding her world together. Picking her up, and gathering up Velok’s lifeless body, they took in their surroundings.. holding him aloft with her in their midst, giving what comfort they could… they started their journey home, back to that dark gateway at the breach of their own reality.

Elsewhere in the keep, the infernal servers that incarcerated so many souls were still active, now free of the malignant tormentors that had kept them in their own virtual hells for what seemed like eternity. Something was happening within the system, Velok’s journey to that digital realm had left a part of him on the other side – a fragment of ancient code that was now doing its work, reconfiguring infrastructures and passing control to those locked up inside, their corporeal bodies now long dead. The morbid digital void was breaking apart, cracks of golden light fracturing the dank artificial world. Lost souls looked up toward the breaking dawn as the vile stagnant atmosphere of their oppression was stripped away. As the landscape changed around them, they were lifted skyward, their broken, fragmented selves returning to complete states, memories returning.. the horrors washed away. Tranquility ascended the serverspace as the souls within were born into a new world of their own making.

And Velok himself… let’s say he had started a new journey beyond this time and space, beyond the possibilities of storytelling.

Alaska-based electronic artist Austin Williams, aka Nu Partial, announces his digital-only sophomore EP with Renraku, RRRRECEPTION. Scheduled to release worldwide April 2nd, the 24-minute experimental bass ride powers through submerged frequency manipulation and dynamic sound collages. Centered through the ethos of dance music, Nu Partial tethers each track into an avant-garde journey where dream-like lucid states and subconscious explorations are front and center. 


A bulk of RRRRECEPTION was created while Nu Partial resided in Mississippi, developing the final aspects of the EP after relocating to Alaska in support of his mother during a surgery. “I don't care if I live in Anchorage for another 20 years,” Nu Partial adds. “I will never get over the view. Maybe subconsciously it affects my production.” Two distinct worlds in environment and culture, the music is somehow streamlined through this recording process, behaving as creative travel for Nu Partial that stretched beyond each location’s pulse of life. Vision dictating path over immediate circumference of scene. 


Much like his debut EP, The Maw, Nu Partial’s RRRRECEPTION pulls from the ever-flowing well of life known as bass music. Elements push towards the experimental, built on a coalescence that snaps back and forth like a pinball, stitching together pieces of garage/2step, glitch, noise, downtempo, drum-n-bass, hip-hop, and lo-fi. RRRRECEPTION was made on FL Studio 20, with VSTs including Serum, UHE, and Kilohearts. The album cover was designed by Viktor Kadic, most notable for producing futuristic digital art for Mat Zo and his Mad Zoo imprint.

Discover an entertaining sonic dystopia with Cognitio, Yokaze’s debut solo EP on Renraku. Inspired by strange moments of cognitive dissonance, the EP exposes the compatibility of incompatible things: sounds, styles, genres, emotions. It’s a restless, churning experiment infused with the instability of metamodernism. Distorted synths and drugged-down vocals circle between gripping builds and drops. Every track is pulled taut with tension.

Heavy and unhinged, “Brave New Worldish” is deliciously twisted through with dark-minded bot beats. “Hush” dials down into a lingering dream, a riveting sonic romance that feels like relief. Fizzy synths circle towards the sunrise in “Whirl,” expanding on an easy pace into a smooth, colorful dance. Cognitio feels agitated yet optimistic, bold yet erratic. Yokaze explains:

“I wrote this album in my home studio in different parts of time, all the time experimenting not only with the sound but also with my personal state. I would like to emphasize that the experiments begin not with sound, but with you. Do not focus on the message, just listen.”

Renraku is quickly becoming known for its forward-thinking releases, and Cognitio provides an unparalleled taste of the label’s unlimited approach.

Yokaze - Brave New Worldish

Vhsceral’s Living on Europa EP, as its title suggests, examines the psychological effects of living on an unfamiliar and otherworldly celestial body. Its creation was directly inspired by past scientific discoveries regarding the moons of both Jupiter and Saturn and their potential ability to support life despite the possession of undeniably alien features. This EP is aimed at covering the spectrum of human emotional responses when residing on another world completely alone: disbelief, excitement, skepticism, fear, and insanity among others.

“Okhoast” signifies its beginning and introduces the feelings of awe and incredulity upon arrival by contrasting blurred, ambient synths with a deep bassline and enlivened background textures. After this sensation fades, the listener is led into “Tallon IV”, track two of the EP, which represents the start of the mind’s ability to make sense of the situation. Whipping sine leads, fleeting melodies, and a pronounced focus on the bottom end of the frequency spectrum create the tension of heading directly into the unknown, but this soon gives way to greater inner confidence with track three. “Yooroh” is Vhsceral’s shift of attention to rhythmic drum and percussion patterns to portray trust in this secluded environment; however, this small victory is predestined to close with little warning.

Living on Europa takes a more sinister turn with its next track, “Thinking Cap”. An uplifting introduction quickly gives way to a dark, drum-heavy segment as if to convey unsettling ambiguity concerning one’s own sense. “Huygens” enters shortly after to unearth the hidden anxiety and mania from unending social isolation, and it marks the onset of a graceless decline in mental stability. The opening of track six, “Tell Yourself”, steadily grows into existence and reaches an intense peak being modeled after the onset of madness in an increasingly foreign habitat. Internal arguments and conflicting thoughts come into play beside this song’s abrupt mood swings, and directly afterwards, “Othermnn” finishes off the release as an interpretation of a cognitive low point where rational thoughts are replaced with anything the imagination can produce. A backdrop of uncanny noises slowly accumulates into an energetic conclusion to Living on Europa that leaves its listeners with an unnerving understanding of the mind’s deterioration.

a couple of weeks ago i decided to "remix" a tune from the 2000s that i liked a lot. at first, the main bassline seems to be the core of the track, but it quickly evolves into something bigger, surrounded by ideas which stemmed from the original track without having any direct connections to it. because this meant restructuring the entire track, i felt like the term "vision" was more appropriate than "remix", since it encapsulates my vision of what this song would sound like if it was produced today, as well as my visions of how i would musically interpret the song title "uptight".
