RENU (Renu Hossain) is a British-Bengali, London & Berlin based artist. She is a composer, producer, tabla-player, percussionist and music curator. Originally a percussionist for – Grace Jones, State of Bengal, Fun_da_mental, MIKA, Alabama 3 and Tunde Jegede. Learning from percussion Masters in India, Brazil and Cuba, composing for theatre, film & dance & hosting her own nights in London & Berlin. 

RENU released ‘They Dance in the Dark’ late 2017 to critical acclaim.  Her album has been lionised by The Quietus, Art Forum Magazine (Top 10 album of the year), BBC Radio 6 & BBC Late Junction.

For 20 years  RENU has been studying percussion with Masters from India, Cuba, Spain & Brasil. RENU is a tabla disciple of Sri Chiranjit Mukherjee (senior disciple of Kumar Bose) following the classic way of learning – ‘Guru shisha parampara’ which translates to ‘Master student journey’.

Currently RENU has just released an avant garde, experimental album - ‘The Happening’ aptly released at this time of Covid 19.

LNDN & BRLN based RENU started her musical journey around 2000. Her quest for musical experiences have taken her on solo trips to INDIA for the Tabla, CUBA for Latin percussion, BRAZIL for candomble and SPAIN for Flamenco music.

Originally a percussionist for multiple bands & genres – Grace Jones etc.  RENU started to write, compose & produce her own music in the year of 2010.

Fast forward some years, composing for theatre, film & dance, hosting her own nights in London, 1 EP and 3 albums later, she has now landed in an electronic realm. In Berlin and a fourth album to be released in September 2017 - THEY DANCE IN THE DARK.

THEY DANCE IN TNE DARK is released through RENU´s label – Holykuti Records.

Imagine a party, where Gary Numan is married to The Orb, who is slow dancing with Massive Attack, while Oum Kalthoum is French kissing Prince and finally, Daphne Oram is mixing the drinks.

Two years on and off in the Holykuti Studios, produced in London, Berlin & Beirut with singers & performers from Ireland, Iraq, Pakistan, UK & Lebanon, They Dance in the Dark first started as an experiment. Realising her true introvertism RENU worked through mainly the computer and the philosophy of playing Tablas in mind: creating big & infinite sounds with a minimum set up.

They Dance in the Dark largely references 80’s & 90’s electronic dance music. The height of hooky, dark electronic anthems with an underlying post-colonial narrative.

RENU music is increasingly becoming ever more experimental.

They Dance in The Dark is RENUs personal imprint as a weird queer femme in a weird queer world.
