Made with my favorite sounds. Played at the 2022 Experimental Music Studios Concert in the University of Illinois School of Music Auditorium.

Program note:

Boil is a short piece based on the sound of boiling water in a kettle. With boiling water as both an audible component and compositional guide for the piece, Boil combines many sounds I find both aesthetically and personally comforting, particularly due to my association of boiling water with a warm cup of tea and the presence of family. Composed with a combination of recorded & synthesized sounds, granularization, and other techniques I've learned over the past few months, Boil is one of my first of hopefully many ventures into electroacoustic composition.

Made using *many* voice samples of myself and my partner, a Roland 100-M Synthesizer (patched by me and my cousin), and some disparate kick drum/neuro bass samples.

Program note excerpt:

From the beginning of the ideation process, I was set on composing a piece focused on sound and timbre, with an emphasis on exaggerating certain effects like panning and distortion to create a darker tone. Much of the sonic inspiration for *Mindfulness* comes from Australian noise artist Uboa, who experiments with doom metal textures and experimental, industrial compositions. While developing the sound objects for this piece, I found myself gravitating towards samples of the human voice or voice-like samples, which unintentionally made this piece a sort of study on how far I can push the sound of the voice in an electroacoustic context.

With most of my electroacoustic pieces, the concept emerges from the experimental phase of developing sound objects. The resulting concept (and subsequent title) for *Mindfulness* comes from my usage of this type of music as a way to deal with anxiety and intrusive thoughts. In counseling, I learned how “mindfulness” is a tool to observe and label intrusive thoughts in an effort to detach ourselves from them and handle them objectively. This piece, to me, represents in its form & composition how intrusive thoughts appear out of nowhere, as well as my personal journey in learning to deal with them without spiraling out of control.

Memory (2022) is Renzo’s first foray into multi-channel works past stereo, utilizing a combination of low-fidelity iPhone voice memos, field recordings from around campus, and improvised piano to create warm, fleeting vignettes of collected sound memories throughout the past year.

Diaspora (2023) is an expression of my experience growing up in the Filipino diaspora, disconnected from my parents’ life in the Philippines. It is also a direct product of my personal journey learning about Filipino culture during college.

This piece involves recorded samples of the kulintang, a percussive instrument consisting of eight bossed gongs commonly played in the southern regions of the Philippines. The samples were recorded from a kulintang donated to the Philippine Student Association at UIUC for use in performances and recordings by their cultural dancing group, PSA Barkada.

Different cultures across the Philippines have distinct styles and traditions for playing the kulintang. The style of kulintang music from Maguindanao, a province in the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines, is the most cited in ethnomusicology work and contemporary practitioners.

The implementation of Diaspora involves the triggering of samples determined by Markov systems built from Maguindanaon kulintang transcriptions recorded by musicologist Dr. Kristina Benitez and kulintang master Prof. Aga Mayo Butocan. I developed the Markov systems using Professor Heinrich Taube’s musx algorithmic composition software library, with audio processing in SuperCollider.
