Presenting their second release of the year, Antrim’s Or Two Strangers welcomes Sebastian Sellares back to the label for a new EP. The Cordoba resident has been one of the imprints core artists since first appearing in 2019, with five original productions released over the course of a prolific sixteen month stretch. UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Cid Inc’s Replug Records, GMJ and Matter's Meanwhile and US powerhouse Proton Music have also served as landing spots for the Argentine's mesmerizing productions, while progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren continue to champion his sound. With the year being highlighted by the recently released Replug vehicle ‘Sky Above’, a joint EP project produced alongside fellow countryman Ezequiel Arias, Sebastian now returns to Or Two Strangers with a three track showcase entitled ‘Blizzard’.

EP opener and title selection ‘Blizzard’ finds Sebastian operating at the peak of his creative powers. Fuelled by tough driving beats and layers of hypnotic percussion; it’s Sebastian’s stirring melodies which ultimately shape the piece into a memorable dance floor slam. Colourful cascades emerge leading into the main break, sitting in an emotional headspace and bringing with them trails of balmy atmospherics and effervescent effects, before eventually breaking off into a drop of rebounding rhythms and heartwarming chord changes.

Selection two ‘Elements of Nature’ lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Sebastian re-affirms his ability to tip a late-night dance floor over the edge, with wobbly grooves and hip-swinging percussion laying the foundation for misty atmospheres and smoky instrumentation. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, thumping beats rise out of a soulful strum-led break into an ever-evolving, free form finale.

The EP’s final selection ‘Hypnotica’ finds Sebastian continuing to diversify his portfolio with a whimsical creation that’s nicely dialled for the sunrise hours. Deeper in design and highly stylized in delivery, its beautifully contoured, funk-fuelled groove sets the course for incandescent melodies and otherworldly harmonics to create a panoramic musical skyline. Often celebrated for his ability to create emotional themes, Sebastian has ventured further with the ‘Blizzard’ collection, into a time of true innovation, traversing a multitude of realms and dimensions within the progressive spectrum, while excelling throughout.

Cosmic Boogie asked me to put a mix together for his re-launched blog so I put this edit together as a little exclusive for the mix and thought I'd share it here seeing as the original version (either on Chicago's Gherkin or or Italy's D-Vision) is currently changing hands for £40 plus on Discogs!

Released back in 1991, it's still for me one of the most seductive house records ever...

A few things gigwise for February. As well as the usual bit's at West London's 'The Regent' and East London's 'Big In Japan' night, I'm also playing for the Shameless Disco boy's at The Drop in Stoke Newington alongside rising star Ben Sun, really looking forward to that.

Cid Inc. returns to his Replug Records imprint for the much anticipated follow-up to his chart topping ‘Abyss'. Released in April of this year, the peak time opus enjoyed a two week long stay atop Beatport's Progressive House tracks chart. Aided by months of live play from Hernan Cattaneo and Guy J, the boundless eight minute journey firmly sits as one of the year's best in progressive house. Now as the summer season winds to a close Cid Inc. presents the much anticipated follow-up entitled ‘Bird Cherry'.

For an artist who has captured the imagination of progressive music fans for over a decade, Cid Inc. has raised the bar yet again with ‘Bird Cherry'. From its lively beginnings you're immediately captivated as tight beats, buoyant bass tones and finely tuned percussion converge for the ultimate rhythmic wave. Sparse yet timely, ghostly effects add further anticipation before crunchy stabs steal the air as the main break commences. The centerpiece shifts the narrative into emotive territory as blissful harmonics and warm chord changes lead to a swirling synth vortex for the ages.

Equally stunning is the companion piece ‘Fear and Square'. Opening up with a punchy yet warm groove, Cid Inc's finest production hallmarks are on top form here. Hypnotic and fluid, the pulsating framework gets adorned with ghostly atmospheres, smooth rhythmic artefacts and a deadly, hip swinging arp. Adding further fuel to the fire a vocal narrative and growling stabs highlight the break, lost in a forest of cascading electronics and shifty harmonics before a timely roll sparks a dynamic drop. 

Cid Inc. has had a hand in many of progressive music's finest moments, from the aforementioned 'Abyss' to the 2017 smash 'Shifter' and the ultimate set closer in 'Contrite'. Never content with resting on his laurels the Replug label boss has etched another golden moment in the genre's history with 'Bird Cherry'.

'Back in May 2019, GMJ launched another twin-track masterpiece in "Catharsis". Now returning to the title track, a pair of remixes comes from a Colombian pairing and German talent.

Hailing from Kiel, outside Hamburg, Moritz Rausch has become a renowned figure in the world of underground dance music through his Rauschhaus alter-ego. A gifted pianist from a musical family, the Rauschhaus foray into production that began in 2009, quickly bore fruit with releases on Slaap Records, Zaubermilch Records and Budenzauber. However, it was not until late 2015 that the German broke through to the upper echelons with remixes on Einmusika. Further releases for the likes of Parquet, Steyoyoke and Traum followed in a career that has amassed over 400 production credits. September 2018 saw a debut remix of Michael A's "Ciklus One" hit the Proton Music catalogues while "Opal" a month later, saw Rauschhaus sparkle with a stunning original track plus remixes from Heerhorst and Michael A himself.

Now returning to the label, Rauschhaus takes "Catharsis" on a memorable voyage of silky-smooth melodies that echo the themes resonant in GMJ's original as a swathe of new arpeggio sequences bring a playful character to proceedings. Undulating with ease alongside skipping percussive hats, rich bassline and deep kick, the second half erupts in joyous fashion full of counterpoint skill and sublime production mastery. The result is a glorious new interpretation.

A collaborative artistic pairing that began in late 2016 with an outing on Majestic Family Records, Kamilo Sanclemente and Mauro Aguirre have both established reputations that extend far beyond their Colombian homeland. Sanclemente's near 400 production credits have seen the Cali resident feature on some of the finest modern imprints that include the likes of Paul Thomas' UV, Paul Hazendonk's Manual Music and Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital. Furthermore, January 2019's "Spiral Patterns" alongside fellow countryman, Dabeat, saw a wonderful Proton Music debut for Kamilo. Similarly, Mauro Aguirre has been involved in Colombian dance music for over 25 years with DJ appearances at countless bars, clubs and parties and performances on La Super Estacion 100.5 and La X 96.5 FM. Joining forces on Clubsonica Records with "Hera" in March 2018, Kamilo Sanclemente and Mauro Aguirre make their combined Proton Music debut with a richly stratified interpretation of "Catharsis". 

A driving beat and intricately programmed percussive top-line form a foundation for a series of haunting chord progressions to remind the listener of GMJ's central motif. Simultaneously, a rich arpeggio shimmers across the remix connecting with the original's melodic themes before breaking free at the mid-point breakdown and blending effortlessly with Sanclemente and Aguirre's intelligent production work. The result is a classy interpretation full of flair and poise.'

Making a mark on Proton Music on a regular occasion, GMJ and his "Mystic Sea" showed the Australian artist at his finest in late 2019. Returning to the title track, remixes come from UK and Israeli talents.

Imran Khan is a rapidly rising force in the world of underground dance music. Able to generate a beautifully original sound palette from the production tools available to him, the UK artist has shown a desire and passion to learn from his peers, understand his craft and apply new techniques to his work. Khan has subsequently amassed over a century of production credits in a three-year period that has seen him feature on a raft of high-profile imprints including Clinique, Stellar Fountain and Balkan Connection.

In addition, Particles and Proton Music have become a regular home for Khan's music with 2018's "Arrival" for the former and 2019's "Organik" and "Sunsweat" EPs for the flagship imprint in the latter half of the year. Taking "Mystic Sea" on a typically impressive new voyage, the Imran Khan remix glistens with rich a rolling groove tied to a subterranean bassline that carries the track dynamically forward. Retaining the feel of GMJ's original, a hypnotic lead riff echoes throughout while multi-textured pads fill the sonic space behind. Pulsating white-noise washes usher in a third movement as rhythm and bass take hold once more combined with melodic riff.

Following in the footprints of such luminary producers as Guy J, Khen and Guy Mantzur, Golan Zocher continues to forge his own path from his Israeli home with a growing collection of music that totals over a century of production credits. A respected DJ with a degree in audio engineering and his own Bloom Records, Zocher has found his work featured on such blue-chip labels as Pipe & Pochet, Nick Warren's The Soundgarden and Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital. Moreover, an appearance on the "Global Entry, Vol. 1" compilation for the best-selling Sol Selectas imprint was a further notable highlight in March 2020.

Making his Proton Music debut, the Golan Zocher remix of "Mystic Sea" bristles with chunky low-slung groove that evolves gradually with pads from GMJ's original, before a powerful driving bassline takes hold. Full of brooding menace, a searing lead motif with its roots firmly in "Mystic Sea", pierces the rhythmic melange showcasing its strength at the mid-point breakdown. A rippling arpeggio adds depth in the latter stages to create a work of power, craft and technique.

Reinvigorating their collaborative partnership Dmitry Molosh and Michael A return to Cid Inc's Replug Records with 'Integral'. Hailing from Belarus, both Dmitry and Michael sit amongst progressive music's elite guard. Their respective solo productions continue to earn play and support from the genre's premiere tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, while also landing them releases on Hope Recordings and Sudbeat Music. Also calling Replug a comfortable home, Dmitry and Michael now return to the label with their first collaborative project in almost four years.

Much loved for their exploration of all things progressive and groovy, the Belarus duo exceeds expectations here, delivering two stunning pieces of music beginning with the title selection 'Integral'. Set in motion by a warm, chunky foundation, its robust core comes up quickly, with layers of finely tuned drums, crunchy rhythms and squelchy synths uniting in a fiery sonic comet. Shifting energy into the main break, heartfelt harmonics and fragmented melodies gently blanket the electric underbelly, resonating on a higher frequency as tasteful modulation rises and the groove drops for a chugging finale.

Operating on a similar sonic plane is the companion piece 'Twelve Days'. Otherworldly in nature, tough beats and dark stabs anchor the journey as the piece flows through a series of pulsating rhythms and mind-bending effects. Continuing on an unpredictable storyboard, ominous overlays and percussive flashes highlight the first act, perfectly setting up an icy break. Adding further intrigue, a wave of tranquil arps provide an effervescent foundation for the duo's dystopian soundscapes, before building to a granular sizzle as a rush of drums ignites a powerful crescendo. It caps off a hugely successful project from two of progressive music's most talented artists, further solidifying Replug's place at the top of this burgeoning genre.

Dmitry Molosh & Michael A - Integral [Replug]

'Roger Martinez's Higher States begins the new year by welcoming Simos Tagias to the label for his debut EP. As one of the most recognized names in progressive house, the Greek artist has landed releases on Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Cid Inc's Replug Records. The Athens resident has continued to explore the creative realms of the genre in recent years, expanding his repertoire to it's more techno inspired derivatives, while never losing sight of his much-loved melodic sound. Now following a remix for Proton Music to begin the new year, Simos makes his first appearance on Higher States with 'Waterdrop / Fluxer'.

Approaching a decade-long production career, Simos continues to flourish, earning praise from the underground's elite DJs. The smooth, evocative vibes of 'Waterdrop' get the release underway and appear set for a similar fate. Following a prelude of warm beats, hip swinging percussion and wavy arps, comes redolent rhythms and soulful swells. Tastefully timeless and evolving with an energetic prowess, it's a spacious lead theme which shifts the narrative further into transcendent territory. Wispy effects and fragmented vocals add depth and emotion, coming to full fruition during the main break and elegantly peaking for a spirited final act.

Completing the release in fine fashion are the dreamy tech-vibes of 'Fluxer'. Showcasing a tighter rhythmic prowess than its predecessor, it's compact core and rippling low end aim squarely for the dance floor; while an airy resonance delivers a subtle yet powerful emotional response. Smooth and evocative, its seductive cadence pushes forward into a charming break, blanketed with glowing pads and iridescent effects, before ultimately melting down into a chugging finale. It rounds out a stunning two track showcase from Simos, setting the course for what should be an excellent year for the Greek artist.'
