You would think these dark and brooding tracks were written during a global pandemic, or some sort of existential crisis. But according to Nathan Hall, they were not. Partial to the darker, more introspective and weighty songs on his favourite albums he claims "dark music makes me happy". Filled with heavy stomping rhythms, sleazy synths and tension tension tension. Both NOL and The Good Stuff called on two completely singular artists to lend their voices to the source material. For NOL it happened to be a chance meeting at a gig in Moscow, Kira Lao's incredibly clever play on words only adds to the distorted and dystopian atmosphere with several ways to describe "NOL", or Nothing in Russian. SpaceAgePoetry (aka Justin Samgar) steps in on The Good Stuff with his eerie predictions of conspiracy and inequality repeating "the best things in life are free, I'm not paying for this S#*t".

Nathan called on a few of his favourites to re-imagine the originals. Italian power duo Alien Alien re-emerge for a long and blissed out "bolero ecstasy" remix of NOL. Label staple and stompy sample master Sakuri sped up The Good Stuff and drove it home straight to midtempo madness. Finally, A-Tweed molded The Good Stuff into playful modular territory with his "Cylons" Remix.

After having him on RBR first compilation, we are so excited to share with you the Brazilian producer Yabiru. Yuri is a paulista currently growing beats in Itacaré, Bahia, surrounded by nature and oceanic landscapes , which inspire him building sounds with an organic touch and deeply rooted bass. He was also greatly influenced by his parents' records collection, as well as Candomblé music and general Brazilian culture’s rhythmic wealth. Minimal, breaks, downtempo, dubstep and trip hop are his main electronic influences, but what are his limits, really?

(Curator of the netlabel 'SENSO Psicodelia' and founder of the cultural collective 'Habitatt' promoting art and culture in Brazil, he had the opportunity at Resonar Festival, Tropical Burning Man, Universo Paralelo and many clubs such as D-Edge, Trackers, Clash Club,o CALDO, Orgânu, MOND, Caixa Esquerda, Noise Jumpers and more. A strong experience that led him to manifest his vision in his words:
"SOUND, invisible magical breath, manifests itself filling the gaps in space, inducing each soul to movement."
For this special release, Yuri made us the beautiful present of an emotions-filled 4-tracks EP, inspired from the loss of a family member and the realization of death. As he went through different stages of grief, he got different inspirations from his ambivalent and changing feelings. Some time afterwards, with a look back on what he has been through, he wanted to recreate musically the slow cure triggered by this life & death shock.

Death, it first touches you when you lose a close one. A cold slap waking you up from childhood and optimism. We are not immortal, we are just a soul in an ephemeral envelope. 
« A Pele », the skin in Portuguese, refers to the body, the piece of meat and flesh you possess and take care of, which will eventually decay, rot and disappear. To illustrate these hard feelings, Yabiru composed a bassy and breaky downtempo work with a deep and mental touch stomped by a strong kick and low percussions. Psychedelic synths will twist your brain while melancholic strings are here to calm the dark energy of the track.

«Acknowledge». Acceptance is close, anger is behind, and the soul starts to see the open doors and the clear sky through the curtains. A work defined by the same mental approach but with more optimistic acid textures and bass depth, rolling on a breaky yet quite clubby beat strongly influenced by masters of minimal house.

In the wake of a profound loss, Marie Klock, a neo-chanson singer and multi-instrumentalist from Paris, presents a poignant tribute with her debut on Pingipung. On “Damien est vivant” Marie Klock pays homage to the poet Damien Schultz, who has recently passed. They were intertwined both in artistic collaboration and deep friendship. 

Marie Klock creates a powerful ode to Damien Schultz's surreal, anarchic, witty and at times provocatively obscene French (English translations are included in the vinyl release). The poet's own voice resounds alongside Klock's, oscillating between spoken word and neo-folk vocals. Recorded in an intimate lo-fi setting with co-producer Julien Louvet, the 10 songs are far from a mournful requiem. They showcase idiosyncratic pop music brimming with humour and absurdity. “Damien est vivant” is a celebration of the unique bond they shared, in past and present. The melancholy sometimes takes on an almost whimsical quality, an allusion to the world as perceived through the lens of two kindred spirits. 

Marie Klock has appeared as keyboardist on international stages with Sofia Portanet and collaborated with artists such as Jean-Louis Costes, Chilly Gonzales, Charlotte Brandi and Adrienne Pauly. Her self-titled solo LP (2020, Les Disques De La Face Cachée) was a cheeky outing of her synth-chanson act. She is currently working on a duo album with Anadol, to be released on Pingipung in autumn 2024.

 “Damien est vivant” will be released on Good Friday 2024. Marie Klock will present the album in live ceremonies.

Marewrew (pronounced: Ma-leoo-leoo / mɑleːu̯leːu̯) is a female vocal group that sings traditional Ainu songs. The music of the long-suppressed people from northern Japan has been a particular focus of Pingipung's output in recent years, together with Oki Kano who recorded and produced many Ainu artists. Following various re-releases by Umeko Ando, the late grande dame of traditional Ainu music, the spotlight is now on the a cappella music of Marewrew, which by the way means ‘butterfly’ in Ainu. Attentive listeners will recognise the voices, as some of the band have already performed as backing singers on recordings by Umeko Ando. Their a cappella versions of traditional Ainu music shed a whole new light on the fascinating songs that have been passed down through generations exclusively through song.

'Ukouk' means 'round singing', which refers to the form in which Marewrew perform and record. Many of the songs are set as tightly interwoven canons: one starts, the others join in, but slightly out of phase: Almost like dub echoes, except that they are sung and not created in post-production. The short songs sometimes unfold into a wondrous trance ('Sikata Kuykuy', 'Honkaya') that seems to spin round and round - if singing can actually dance, then this is how. Nature sounds and woodpeckers can be heard ('Hawsa’), and there is a funny miniature in which the ladies imitate birdsong ('Takuro'). Things get hypnotic with an evocative song about stranded whales ('Hunpe Yan Na’) or an ode to the Orca as ‘Little Sea God’ (‘Pon Repun Kamuy’). The album culminates in unexpected pop ('Yaykatekara') or cumbia moments ('Kanerenren') with a band line-up including percussions and Oki Kano on the famous Tonkori harp.

Marewrew are Rekpo, Hisae and Mayunkiki. Rim-Rim was a member of the group until 2022. Mayunkiki reflects on the ambivalence of performing traditional music as a contemporary band: "When we first started performing, we all thought we had to perform in an Ainu way. But over time we have become more and more open to new ways of singing. I think if our way of singing is seen as the only, correct way of our tradition, then it won't spread, it's not alive. We like it when it's traditional, but it changes, just like our voices have changed over time.” ( Quote from the film 'Marewrew's Voice' by Eiko Soga (2021))

'Ukouk' is a selection of Marewrew's work from the last 13 years, compiled from CD releases by Pingipung's Andi Otto. Oki Kano has contributed unreleased material and added new versions of the songs which had only been released in Japan. The album has been remastered by Kassian Troyer and is now available on LP for the first time.

Filmi (Hinglish, lit. 'of films') music has always been an integral part of Indian cinema. Protagonists sing, villains don't. Fusing genres and interpolating western influences was notably common during the golden age of 50s-70s. Songs have been diverse & experiment-happy. Psychedelic atmospheres were hot, even scratches & synthesizers appeared on the scene. 


Half a century later, Kundan Lal digs up these classic vinyl records from the backyards of Delhi, Marrakech or Cairo, and feeds his sampler with microsequences, cuts and loops from those Original Sound Tracks. Injecting some acid synths, cascaded strings, fundamental horns, electronic percussion, dub delays and his trademark field recordings from rogue states as a salute of worship. All pumped through a worn-out, shabby speaker.
