Whipnotiq is a sorceress of unique sounds spanning electronic music and beyond. Classically-trained on the violin since she was six years old, the curator behind Neptunian Influence is somewhat of a renaissance woman. She received her B.A. in Art History from UCLA and currently works as a museum educator. Sharpening her craft at influential underground parties in LA and passionately building her record collection over the past eight years, Miranda Calzada has shared the bill with techno elite such as Function, Rrose, Cio D'Or, Lucy, Voices from the Lake, Daniel Bell, Carlos Souffront, and Ø [Phase], to name a few. As the purveyor of Neptunian Influence, an electro-focused mix and event series, she has brought on rising and established talents such as 214, James Shinra, ADAB, Kiernan Laveaux and Sassmouth. 

It's worth mentioning, she is alumni of Walking & Falling, a DJ/production mentor program for burgeoning women and nonbinary artists. In November 2019 she was invited to DJ at Ellen Allien's 'Vinylism' held at Stellar Remnant’s record shop in DTLA. Quite a lot to accomplish already. We can't wait to see what lies ahead!

Lower Tar is the experimental techno project of Los Angeles-based musician and visual artist, Ori Ofir. Formed in 2016, Lower Tar has released albums on Ascetic House, Ecstatic Recordings, and Night Gaunt Recordings, and has collaborated with Silent Servant on a duo project called Sterile Hand. He also co-runs the party/label L.A.U.R.A. as a new avenue that focuses on bringing the Los Angeles electronic community together. Lower Tar is a project that explores the complex power structures that revolve around identity and what it means to be critical of a society while still maintaining a sense of self.

Obe is a thoughtful and eclectic sound artist living and working in Chicago. Most recently, he joined the quickly growing and superb discography of label Chicago Research, with the release of his double cassette, "Lag." His collaborations with prolific artists such as Timecop and Leaf Miner are among some of the projects this accomplished producer can already list on their achievements thus far. We've had the pleasure of hosting him at our live events in the past and predict more of the same in the future.

Del Hale, better known as Miss Twink USA, is a high-energy DJ and producer from Chicago with an ear for alt-energy sonics with a larger-than-life club finish. Truly, a divine presence in and out of the booth. They are the co-runner of the Chicago-based platforms Legion of Doom and Rumors Chicago.

C.l.a.w.s. is the San Francisco based solo project of Brian D. Hock.  He co-runs the labels “Squirrels On Film” with Solar and “Immortal Sin” with Tyrel Williams. In addition to producing and DJing as C.l.a.w.s., he plays drums in the band “Bronze” (RVNG Intl/Not Not Fun/B.F.E./Castleface) and formerly played drums and synthesizers in “The Vanishing” (G.S.L./Cochon).

DJ Hockey approaches techno by intermingling layers of contrasting elements. Defining characteristics for his selections are thick, encompassing atmospheres and moods on the introspective side. These sounds are often paired with nods to the Midwest wrapped in a single session, crafting a journey through spacious and full beats. A consistent overarching theme of DJ Hockey’s style in selecting and producing is having a driving pace and heavy hit of psychedelia. 

When asked about this mix, "The mix I have prepared for Research and Development explored a familiar but expanded avenue of my typical sound. It journeys through a less driving pace of off-kilter house/techno-house territory and drifts into spacey, yet bounce-y techno all with a Midwestern flare."

California born and based DJ, Nick Moss, is a former member and creative contributor of Kosmetik, a queer San Francisco-based music collective that ran a weekly pre-pandemic event at the legendary venue, The Stud. He is also one of the co-conspirators of Kosmetik’s A/V mix series, KTV, which aired for a year on the Bay Area’s beloved Fault Radio. Currently, his focus lies in co-producing ‘Quiche’, an open-air dance party in San Francisco that has recently made its debut on the SF scene. His sets keep listeners and dancers on their toes, taking unexpected turns through various moods, and dipping through a wide array of left-field sounds and genres including psychedelic techno, wave, electro, and beyond.

In 12 years as a DJ, Associate built his reputation on versatility. In his early days, he played Detroit House to get opening gigs all the while collecting his beloved techno and playing it for several people in the basement of the 9:30 club. Those heads noticed and in short order, he joined Vague Output in Baltimore and Sequence in DC. With Sequence, he fully realized the stresses and satisfaction that come with immersion in all night parties at warehouses in a major US city. He heard adulation from his sets for DVS1, Erika, BMG, and DJ Stingray as often as he heard the brusque instruction of a policeman or fire marshall. Through it all he clings to this underground music and passion for his latest adventure, Midwest Plenty. Under this name, he invites fellow midwest DJs who march under the radar and keep the underground alive. 

Midwest Plenty aside, Associate holds a monthly at Eaton Radio where he invites local electronic music artists of all genres. Again, his versatility is on full display from month to month while he plays warmup for his talented guests. Over the last few years, he seeks to leave his own mark, creating mindbending mixes, like this installment for R&D, along with his own productions he started early in March 2020. In keeping his midwest politeness, Associate appreciates listens and feedback and of course thanks the R&D crew and Furtive for inviting him.

Experimental Housewife has delivered an all vinyl mix as their contribution to the Research & Development mix series. 

Experimental Housewife is a Bay Area-based producer, label owner + DJ of over 20 years. She is celebrated for her analytical ear, technical savvy, and natural ability to bridge styles and eras. A lover of early progressive house and breezy pads, ExHouse is a connoisseur of deep rhythms and heady cuts, making the overall ExHouse sound notably nostalgic but fresh, wild but contemplative, urban yet wide open.

Bulgarian dark mastermind MANASYt（Petar Tassev) has been rocking his own brand of Nurolektro since 2003. He’s responsible for a vast array of menacing titles on labels such as Bunker, Touchin' Bass, Kommando 6 and Musar. An artist that couldn’t care less about trends nor hypes, and whose main driving force is that authentic passion for the genre.
Some of his tunes resemble a future horror movie soundtrack, others a visit to a mental clinic but most sound like what exactly hostile aliens would listen to while attacking Earth.

Lorelei (Laura Vicinanza) is a Chicago-based DJ, Producer, and Record Store Employee. Originally from Metro Atlanta, Laura began DJing in 2014 when she joined Ann Arbor’s Michigan Electronic Music Collective. She quickly became a resident DJ around the student co-ops and at local venues in Ann Arbor and Detroit. She joined Ann Arbor's 88.3 FM WCBN as a freeform radio DJ and on the long-running Crush Collision program rotation. Laura moved to Chicago in 2019, where she has worked at Wild Prairie Records and currently works at Gramaphone Records. Laura has played events such as Kudzu in Atlanta, Research and Development in Chicago, Interdimensional Transmissions in Detroit, and many more.

Despite choosing a more private path than the typical artist, Auralogic has been increasingly sought out by promoters who put music first and foremost. She’s become a permanent fixture of Colorado's flourishing underground.

Her ubiquity is well deserved. She has teased out a recognizable thread connecting techno, house, breakbeat, ambient and other left-field tangents of electronic music. To experience the distinctive atmosphere auralogic curates during each of her sets is to understand why, despite her best efforts, she remains in demand. At once analytical and expressive, it doesn’t take long for her to identify the point of resonance between herself and everybody on the dance floor.

Based in Madison, WI, Kitty Spit got her start DJing with the Foshizzle crew a few moons ago.

Moved by the sounds of well-loved Detroit warehouses and Chicago clubs, her selections run the gamut from spaced-out dubs to filthy ghetto-tech and deep electro steppers, and if you catch her outside on a breezy summer night, you might even hear a classic diva-house jam you forgot about.

2022 has been busy so far for her, helping throw parties with the Jams crew and Remain in Night series in Madison, regularly mowing down dance floors for Pulse in Milwaukee, and even a return appearance at the Great Beyond festival in July.

Chicago's Leesh lives for the Rave. Rooted by the beautiful moments of community and camaraderie on the dancefloors and behind the decks, they created Daisychain at the very start of 2018. The weekly mix series sheds light on the sonic energy from trans and nonbinary folks and women from around the world. Inspired by new beginnings, prismatic light, daisies and the power of genuine connection ~ Daisychain sprouted to life and has only continued to grow. Leesh hosts a monthly Daisychain residency on Berlin's Refuge Worldwide radio station. You can also find them in the Bay Area from time to time as a resident of Squish.

Alejandro Marenco, the shortened moniker of Nicaraguan-born, Chicago-based musician Noel Alejandro Gutierrez Marenco, makes expansive electronic grooves designed for “throwing ass.” Marenco’s music is evocative of that night, the one that feels simultaneously driftless and gigantic, one that glimmers upon remembering hours spent in a sweat-drenched, dimly-lit club, or the last dance at a dive bar down the street, or a blaring stereo during a wide-eyed 3am cross-city drive to get home. Largely creating in Ableton (and occasionally bolstered by a drum machine and Moog synth), Marenco fluidly weaves a variety of sounds from endless inspirations - Jamaican collective Equiknoxx, the latin tribal techno of Nick León, and the influential dance label Livity Sound, to name a few. Elastic beats, industrial percussion, fluid synth, oscillating rhythms, and a flourish for ever-changing instrumentation, Marenco’s mixes are reverberating moments of kaleidoscopic euphoria.

Born in Suburban Chicagoland and raised in Northwest Wisconsin, Steve Seuling (a.k.a. Centrific) anchored himself in Minneapolis since 1993. In a mostly-hidden, yet vibrantly evolving underground scene, Seuling started attending, curating, and DJing events in the mid-1990s. Underscoring his commitment for the Twin Cities’ massive bass bins, Seuling then in March of 1998 founded “Intellephunk”, his brand of parties that began at the now-shuttered Rockler Fur Building, drawing inspiration from those of his contemporaries (Woody McBride’s “Electric Disko”, Drop Bass Network’s Even Furthur). Centrific throws a weekly summer party called “Communion”, founded in 2007 alongside fellow Midwest native Dustin Zahn. Communion is an inclusive open-air day party, focusing on the psychedelic side of house and techno. In 2020, Centrific created an online Twitch stream entitled “Distant Future”, a platform where he invites local and international DJs to showcase their music and chat about their ideas for the future of the rave scene, and most recently he is co-founder of midwest based techno campout “The Great Beyond” alongside partners Jasmine Seuling, and Dustin Zahn. His dedication to preserving and protecting the local roots of the dance music community shows that, in many ways, he’s the lifeblood of Midwest techno.

Currently based in San Francisco, Farsight intermingles the UK hardcore continuum with high-impact genres like trap music, jersey club, reggaeton and dancehall, cultivating a rabid following both domestically and across the Atlantic.
 
Emerging as an artist to watch with a daring EP on Belgium-based Maloca Records in 2020 and rave-inflected vinyl for the UK's Scuffed Records in 2021, further releases with Lobster Theremin sublabel Breaks 'N' Pieces, and Scuffed Records in 2022 have made evident Farsight's artistic range and hunger to create. 

Farsight's mutant hybrids have been smuggled onto the dancefloor by the likes of Sherelle, Pearson Sound, Jaguar, Pangaea, Anz, DJ Zinc, Madam X, Dixon, Emerald Rose Lewis, Nikki Nair, Fauzia, India Jordan, Batu, Jossy Mitsu, Moxie, Doctor Jeep, Breaka, ZULI, Om Unit, and other selective selectors.

BoneReader(Choya Webb) is a Chicago-based producer, sound artist, and disc jockey whose identity and roots strongly inform their work. Channeling sounds from multiple diasporas, BoneReader’s work centers exhibiting connections between various genres with a technical emphasis on techno, electronic, and house music. As an organizer both in community and sound-scaping, BoneReader seeks to build sanctuaries for cultural makers to expand and experiment with their art forms. When the pandemic is over you'll be sure to find FUJ turning out dark, sweaty rooms in basements, warehouses and lofts. This Chicago born wizard is practicing some sort of warped magic on the dancefloor. Prior to March when the world as we know it stopped, FUJ and ALTVR (otherwise known as DJ Neiman Marcus)were hosting, performing and curating The Comfort Hole, a monthly held at the haunted punk rock bar, The Liar's Club. In my opinion, a perfect venue for their heavy, rebellious brand of techno and dance music. Introducing, the newest member of the Research & Development team, Chicago-based producer, composer, and DJ, Eric Fernandez. Fernandez is known for performing under the moniker of Makeen. His live sets are centered around improvisation and spontaneity. Makeen’s sensibilities are the result of years performing solo and in collaboration with fellow Chicago artists. These previous experiences have allowed him to carry a heavy, dance floor focused raw energy into both his DJ sets and hybrid performances. 

In 2019, alongside well known mutant electronics manipulator, Beau Wanzer, he co-founded and helped curate the monthly techno party, Near Dark, at the legendary yet sadly defunct Danny’s Tavern. This year, he looks forward to a handful of new releases and is excited to join JS Alvarez in the lab for Research and Development.
