After witnessing @alokamusic’s set at Fusion festival 2025, we simply had to invite him for our 34th Herbarium episode. We are more than glad we did as he put together such a powerful journey enriched with juicy sounds and grooves, we can’t hold back to move to this 🐒

Here’s some background about aloka’s choice of a plant: 
The plant that I think best represents my sound is gorse (Ulex europaeus). It grows everywhere along the Welsh coast where I’m from, and it has this wild, intimidating look with its sharp spines. But when it blooms, it suddenly becomes bright and full of colour - sometimes almost all year round. I think that the contrast of something fierce turning vibrant really reflects the balance in my music.

William Selman (@wselman) is a Portland, Oregon-based multi-disciplinary artist whose sound work uses field recordings, synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and digital processing techniques to explore themes such as place and non-places, embodiment, atmosphere, and the dialectic between the real and the artificial. He co-manages the Critique of Everyday Life label with Chris Miller (Gunnar Haslam) and plays in the improvisational trio Wild Card of Cascadia with Paul Dickow (Strategy) and Marcus Fischer. He has released works on Old Technology, Hausu Mountain, Mysteries of the Deep, Digitalis, and Critique of Everyday Life.

Flowing through bass, dubstep and techno, the compilation features new tracks by the likes of Gillielove, Andrae Durden, Prieste5s, Ila Brugal, Viiaan and lastly our premiere, ophélie who rounds off the release beautifully with a deeply emotional track. Drawing from elements of dub, ambient, prog and techno, ophélie's 'Drosera' feels like a mirage, a hazy memory filled with emotion that captures you within its spell. It feels like a desert-island track.

She uses found sounds, field recordings, voice, power tools, samples, noise, reverb and distortion sequenced through hardware synthesizers to create pulsing, rhythmic soundscapes. Her DJ sets tend to be high-energy, harsh and punishing. Thematically, her work delves into themes of occultism, anti-religion & anti-capitalism.

In addition to her sound design, songwriting and DJ work as Octonomy, she has done a number of commissioned sound pieces and longform ambient compositions for experiential spaces, performances and immersive installations, and has incorporated her soundscapes by way of utilizing various different responsive software and hardware-based technologies.
