The Funk Hunters Present:  The Detour Podcast #08

Paride Saraceni’s debut Truesoul release, ‘Burning’, brings us three uplifting and vocal-heavy tech house tracks. A steady groove throughout, Saraceni’s choice of instrumentation and flowing percussion create a melodic yet techy release with all three tracks laced with a solid kick drum, tinkering high hats and sporadic vocals. ‘Burning’ is is the perfect offering for the new year and proves there are big things on the horizon for Saraceni.

"Starting a set on the Robot Heart bus, in motion, in the middle of the desert, was certainly the least expected and most unparalleled moment I have experienced as a DJ. Watching the burners follow us on their lit up bikes, dust swirling all around, with the majestic Black Rock City as a backdrop completely blew me away.

I still get goosebumps all over, when thinking about it.

There truly is no place like Burning Man, a HOME for people who breathe LOVE.

I hope the mix will somehow convey the feel of my magical  & ever inspiring experience out there.

The sixth single from Fort Knox Five's album Pressurize The Cabin is the title track, which features vocals from Vokab Kompany and three stellar remixes from Mat The Alien, Qdup and J*Labs.

Longtime collaborator and touring partner Mat The Alien has lent his scratching mastery to previous Fort Knox Five tracks, but this is his debut remix on the label.  Returning to his drum'n'bass roots he turns in a 'really good' dancefloor banger. The remix has an infectiously rolling bassline, sped-up vocals, melodic keys and warped bass stabs.  Mat The Alien has crafted a frenetic remix for the floor sure to get heads bobbing and feet stomping!

Fresh from a four deck DJ set tour with Fort Knox Five, labelmate Qdup takes Pressurize The Cabin to a different altitude with his 4/4 glitch-hop remix.  Through a series of strong releases, Qdup has been refining the sound of his glitched-out, electro boogie breaks which he brings to bear on this track.  Maintaining a full vocal treatment, he amps up the pressure with electro blips and a wobbly bass line that hits you right in the knees.

Fort Knox Five love to champion rising talent and work with their friends from around the world and California-based J*Labs is a welcome new addition to this release.  She takes the hip-hop elements of the original and injects it with a full dose of twerk and glitch-hop.  This is a really fun remix that breaks and bubbles with tweaked out vocal stabs and blippy percussion.

Fort Knox Five linked up with Vokab Kompany while on tour and tapped the San Diego based hip-hop vocalists for the title track of the album.  Vintage brass blasts, funky breaks and tons of bounce combine to make the original mix a party anthem for the ages.  Vokab Kompany's high energy, party rocking vocals are the perfect cherry to top this quintessential Fort Knox Five confection.

Cristoph’s first offering to Truesoul comes in the shape of a two track, tech house delight. Lead track ‘Genesis’ holds a pounding bass line and distorted vocals. The slow but steady build up, alongside the deep synth stabs, creates an intensive groove. ‘Exodus’ comes packed with atmospheric vocals and funky percussion. The two tracks together create an emotive and fast paced release – one not to be missed.

Layton Giordani makes his Truesoul debut with a pumping, three track release. The high energy tracks showcase Layton’s youthful and fresh approach to production. ‘Unspoken’, holding a pounding kick drum and thumping techno sound, is the heavier of the three tracks whilst ‘Misunderstood’ and ‘Trusting You’ cut a lighter groove. The samples are uplifting, sounds imaginative and the percussion is tight - this EP is not to be missed.

Sidney Charles - Jack Endlessly

Following on from his well-received ‘Impermanence’ EP in 2015, Sidney Charles makes a welcome return to the Truesoul fold. 

It may be a surprise to learn Sidney Charles only produced his first record in 2011; indeed, the Hamburg-born, London-based artist has crafted some of the most sophisticated and effective productions spanning the house and techno genre in recent years, taking inspiration from the rough jacking sounds of the early ‘90s. 

His first release on Truesoul in three years sees him in typically inspired form with a versatile four-track package. ‘Jack Endlessly’ builds layer upon layer of groove-ridden beats and ravey stabs that lead into an exaggerated build up, all deftly complimented by a suggestive vocal sample. ‘R.E.D.’ contrasts excellently, a dirty bass-driven cut with shades of Chicago, that makes its mark courtesy of a rousing soulful vocal. ‘Unchained’ sounds as though it was forged in a knives factory, as expertly programmed drums rub shoulders with deep twisted subterranean stabs for a pin-sharp finish. ‘‘Molec’ closes out the EP as a shimmering end-of-night melodic gem that reinforces the German’s versatility and thoughtfulness as a producer.

Riva Starr and Tiger Stripes drop their debut collaborative EP, with the inspired ‘Sound Of The Bettest’.

We first got an inkling of the exciting partnership that may exist between Stefano Miele (Riva Starr) and Mikael Nordgren (Tiger Stripes) last November, when Stefano presented his new Hyperloop project on Truesoul. Not only was it one of 2017’s standout releases for the label, it featured an exciting re-work by Tiger Stripes of EP track ‘Fallen Angel’, giving us a sense of the musical harmony that exists between the pair and taste of what was to come. 

With Riva Starr’s background as a jungle/breakbeat DJ and Tiger Stripes long-history in techno, together with the pair’s shared love of dirty house beats, ‘Sound Of The Bettest’ is a wicked melting pot of both their pasts and passions. Hammered by Adam Beyer, the title track is driven by a stunning groovy bass, warehouse MCing and deft breakbeat interludes. ‘Move It’, is a rough and tough accompaniment, characterised by a bad arse jungle bassline and breakbeats, impactful vocals and  and stomping techno beats.

Producer, engineer and DJ extraordinaire Reset Robot is the alias of Dave Robertson, an accomplished artist based in Portsmouth on the south coast of the UK.
