Although now relocated from his native Yorkshire to his new home of Majorca, James Welsh continues to be one of the most captivating producers in UK house music. Taking in true deep and tech, acid, techno and soulful strands, his impressively varied productions impress whatever flavour he plumbs for. He's graced many of the UK's finest imprints in just a few years, from Hypercolour to Futureboogie to Wolf, labels snapping his hands off to get his tracks into their catalogues. His mix is full of energy and life, a snapshot of his career to date with a quick look ahead to the future woven in.

*How would you describe your sound?*
I would describe my sound as music that can hopefully be enjoyed out of the club as well as in dark rooms at 3 AM.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*
My friends and family inspire me. I'm happiest when my friends like my
music.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*
This mix goes back 3 years to my first release, covering some releases and
remixes in between and up to my next release which is out this month. It could
be considered the 'end of an era' as all these tracks were conceived in West Yorkshire and I'm now living in sunny Mallorca.

Our love affair with Catalonia (all hail Hivern Discs and John Talabot) continues with Sau Poler, the nom de guerre of Barcelona resident Pau Soler. “Bercy” squeezes exotica, layered vocals and otherworldly chord shapes into the proverbial mixer resulting in a bout of hang-loose house. The main track also comes packaged with reworkings by xxxy and Project Mooncircle producer My Panda Shall Fly.

With end of year lists slowly starting to trickle out, there's one track in particular we find that's absent from some of the bigger sites, despite having what could be considered a decent summer. Championed by both Joy Orbison and Scuba in each of their respected Essential mixes, snippets of new untitled Endian teased the notion that a follow up to his Electric Minds and NonPlus releases would be forthcoming in the near future. Having debuted on the Radio 1 airwaves in July 2014, it wasn't till early May 2015 that the track got a name and a confirmed release date on London based label Secretsundaze. Titled 'Finish Me' the track, would go on to become one of our favourite summer anthems (as mentioned here) and acquire a near-omnipresent status in clubs and at festivals up and down the country over the summer period, while still remaining in some way an underground sleeper-hit. We'd like to think the nod to his roots, and other revered alias, struck a chord or possibly two with all the jungle enthusiasts out there, as well as appealing to the house and techno crowd. While the A side explored more club-friendly territory with its melodic aspects and billowing breakdown, the B side's "Dusty" and "Sub Tropics" provided a much more rooted warehouse affair; taking his technical skill and experience as Commix and and channeling it into the confines of 130BPM. His use of subtle melodies and pads, reminiscent of 90s jungle/drum and bass LPs have made for well received tracks like "Birdhouse" and "Two Chords Deep", the latter being one of his early attempts at using a proper hardware setup to explore his techno and house productions, and arguably still one of his best tracks.

The phrase “needs little introduction” is bandied around all over the shop, this time however it really does fit pretty well. xxxy, (yes, the very same https://soundcloud.com/xxxy who has been defining and refining galvanic house for the last 8 years) has recorded a mix for our series.  Simply put, when this mix landed in our inbox, it propelled us into the stratosphere. 

Keeping with the galactic theme, do you remember when Matthew McConaughey was floating around in the 4th dimension in interstellar? In many ways this mix is very similar: Rather than bending space-time and gravity to create a portal into another world, xxxy has cosmically welded together dance floor grooves and unearthly analog textures into an hour and a bit of utter mastery. Rather than floating around the inside of a Black Hole you’re actually just gliding from tune to tune, incredibly effortlessly and enjoyably - A testament to the man’s pedigree and seamless mixing ability.

For an introduction to Amsterdam’s techno scene, few are better suited than Jan Pieter Kind (aka JP Enfant). The young DJ and producer has built links with some of the city’s most coveted clubs for his talents behind the decks over recent years, holding residencies at De School and the now-defunct Trouw. Though he’s best known as a DJ, Kind has helped grow Amsterdam’s electronic landscape as one of the figures behind LET, the acclaimed party series and label where he works as promoter and head of A&R.

With a string of recent releases on LET and a gig schedule spanning across Europe, Kind seems more primed than ever for his career to develop, and his recent relocation to Berlin to go full-time in music should help his growth. This weekend he ticks off a bucket list gig opening up for Jeff Mills in Room One, so he sent us a highly stirring and atmospheric techno mix to show us the roots of his sound.

One of many debuts at Dekmantel Festival later in the year will come from Detroit in Effect aka D.I.E, the now solo project of Tameko J. Williams, also known as DJ Maaco. The Motor City artist has roots that run deep into techno and electro and have helped make him one of Detroit’s most under the radar but influential acts. Records like ‘RU Married’ are classic to this day, while other releases on M.A.P. Records helped established D.I.E’s sound as the artists themselves tended to stay out of the spotlight. 

But this mix will surely put Williams very much back in the headlines: it’s an hour of pure techno and electro heat from the heart of the 313 area code. Quick, slick mixes keep things moving at a real pace as slippery drums and squelchy bass race out of the speakers. Touching on everything from classic Drexciya to timeless vocal cuts, deeper grooves to all out physical assaults, it’s as much a mixing masterclass as it is a real history lesson.
