As we keep weaving our Continuum's sonic tapestry, we have reached our next stop. For our third ritual, we welcome Daniel[i] who will thread a new musical chapter for us. Daniel is an artist we have been lucky to bump into at multiple events, and no wonder why. You can find him performing one of his live or DJ sets (which have taken him to iconic clubs and festivals like OHM, Tresor, C12, Perpendicular, La Valle Electrique…) or collaborating with super projects like Circle of Live. His releases can be found on iconic labels like Alpengluhen, 012, Danza Nativa, Lowless… and we are just naming a few! He also runs the beloved Whispering Signals labels and adjacent projects. And he even has time to curate for incredible festivals like La Nature (which we had the pleasure to visit this year). A busy bee!

We are delighted to have him join The Continuum with this real treat: a recorded set during a Brandwerk anniversary event. Daniel is a master of deep and introspective sounds in any shape or form: ambient, deep techno, dub… and for this one, he delivered a delight of dub goodness: expect a deep groove that would go down a treat as a warmup or at the afters. A heads-down mix drenched in echoes and delays.  A timeless selection by Daniel.

The Continuum: Daniel[i]

"They were wild and crazy years." The Spanish techno icon discusses his early years in Madrid, running record labels and staying true to his sound for more than 30 years.

Spanish DJ and producer Oscar Mulero is a legend of underground techno. Since starting to play parties and make music more than 30 years ago, he's earned a reputation as an anti-conformist tastemaker who's adamantly stuck to his guns. While his trajectory began with Madrid's goth and punk clubs in the '90s, he eventually found techno in the early '00s and started two labels, PoleGroup and Warm Up, as homes for the hypnotic, spaced-out sound that's become his signature. 

In this RA Exchange, Mulero reflects on the early days of the Spanish techno scene and how it's evolved, as well as his own roots and influences. Today, the artist is as active as he's ever been, he discusses how he's maintained longevity as an artist in the face of changing trend, as well as his best practices for making music at home and on the road. For our latest Bleep Mix instalment, Sandwell District come through with a hefty programming of dark rollers fulfilling that promise of reinvigorated purpose they mentioned before: “Having a good time”. And with a wealth of exclusive unheard material it’s hard to refute the mission statement. Dropping straight into the cavernous environs of an unreleased Regis side Frosty Jack’s, the selection rides a restrained line building tension through a number of Nastia Reigel tracks deployed with utmost precision before upping its stride with Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems and quickly landing first peak from The Wizard himself, with Jeff Mills' slamming ‘93 cut Step to Enchantment (Stringent). Taking in a track from their comrade Surgeon’s forthcoming album, as well as the simmering acid of their own tune Hidden, Sandwell District bring it back round full circle via two further unreleased reworks of heroes Meat Beat Manifesto providing a breakbeat singed rupture to close out the proceedings with the vocal snatches of MBM’s Helter Skelter summing it all up really: “It's in my brain now. This is it!”

He continues to build upon his reputation as a prolific producer and masterful DJ with releases spanning all manner of outlets coupled with performances around the world. An artist in the purest sense, Berlin-based Steffi has previously said she wants to be remembered for her work and nothing else. Monitoring her career closely herself, it's easy to see how her consistent growth as a producer and DJ is motivated by keeping her integrity as an artist. With three albums on Ostgut Ton now, her recent World Of The Waking State LP saw her deliver an album more experimental than previous efforts, yet one produced at a time feeling settled more comfortably in her own skin. Seeking new and exciting outlets to express her projects her own labels Klakson and Dolly have been a continual source of new music. She's released a culmination of 70 records from an abundance of friends and new producers, as well as her own, over four different labels and sub-labels. We caught up with Steffi to discuss Klakson and Dolly, her productions with fellow Ostgut Ton artist Virginia, as well as finding the balance between studio and tour time. With not a single four-by-four kick drum in sight, her Truancy Volume is an arc back to her long-time affinity with early Warp and IDM records. Steffi has mentioned in the past how much of an influence the first Autechre album had on her, so it's no surprise their music finds a home in this mix.
