Punk house and techno from a modern Midwest icon.

Every DJ has their own genesis story: a pivotal sound, a formative scene, a defining philosophy. In Kiernan Laveaux's case, her philosophy, rooted in psychedelia and experimentation, sets her apart. Inspired by Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode and New Order, she came of age in Cleveland’s acid house and queer party scenes, developing an ethos that constantly pushes dance music’s limits. Her DJ style is scrambled (in the best way), with zany tricks like scratching, creative EQing and modulation.

This approach reflects the Midwest's DIY tradition, where artists thrive in isolation and cultivate a radical disobedience, as seen in contemporaries like Eris Drew and ADAB. As Laveaux recounted in a 2023 interview with GROOVE Magazin, "Titonton Duvante once told me that being a Midwest DJ is about playing music from anywhere and making it sound like a piece of your spirit."

Spanning two and a half hours, Laveaux's RA Podcast showcases this spirit. It’s a testament to her decade-long career, blending tracks from friends and cherished memories into a transcendent mix. It’s "music to shake your hips to and decalcify your pineal gland." (For the curious, the pineal gland helps regulate your circadian rhythm.) RA.963 will make you dance and think in equal measure—a beautiful, restless and resolutely wicked journey through a singular imagination.

"If a record is falling apart at the seams, I'll probably like it." Recorded live at Houghton 2024, our latest Playing Favourites episode sees the London artist discussing the beautiful leftfield music that's soundtracked his life.

British DJ and producer Call Super brings some colour to the depths of winter with this week's RA Exchange. The multifaceted artist has released music on Houndstooth, Hessle Audio, fabric, Dekmantel and the label he co-runs with Parris, can you feel the sun, becoming known for a deep yet always party-ready sound that combines house, UK funky, tech house and plenty more besides.

In this interview, recorded at last year's Houghton Festival, he talks to RA's managing editor, Carlos Hawthorn, as part of our flagship live series, Playing Favourites. Among his choices are the music he listened to as a child; the record that inspired his passion for DJing; an artist who changed his perspective on music at large; and more practical songs he deploys in sets to refresh a crowd. The territory he covers is huge, from tech house and acid house to contemporary classical, experimental leftfield, abstract percussion and choral music. There is no one quite like Dave Huismans, aka A Made Up Sound. The Dutchman, who's of course also known as 2562, has been in a musical world of his own ever since he first turned heads with his debut in 2006. As of that decade, he has continued to confound expectation and operate away from any prevailing trends, mostly on his own self titled label, but also for other cult outlets like Clone, Trilogy Tapes, and Delsin, where he just dropped his newest release. His music toys with convention, finds rhythm in unknown places and cooks up textures you didn’t think were possible. Broken and abstract yet absorbing and emotive; his sound is a left-field marriage of techno, bass and electro that has proven impossible to imitate. 

Over the course of ninety minutes, The Hague man showcases his penchant for kinked grooves and for high pressure drums. He manages to be maximalist and in your face one moment, then subtle and subversive at others. From disco to electro and techno, it’s all here. It all creates a rugged, seat-of-your-pants ride that throws up plenty of curveballs along the way.
