Groovebox podcast series episode #41 with Darko Esser.

Darko Esser’s devotion to electronic music spans three decades. He has built his international reputation based in two small, but tight-knit music communities in Holland. First as a talent buyer at Groningen’s Simplon, later as a booker and resident of Doornroosje in Nijmegen. Thanks in great part to his efforts, Planet Rose has become one of Europe’s longest running techno nights. Together with his labels Wolfskuil and Balans, this has cemented the town’s reputation as a remarkable techno hub, and boasted Darko’s prominence as an excellent curator. 

Productionwise, Darko Esser has first brought out a string of superb releases under his own name, including his debut album, also called Balans. Tripeo’s ‘First Trip’ in 2012 was meant as somewhat of a side project. But soon enough, his new monicker struck a chord with connoisseurs worldwide. Especially when he unleashed his critically acclaimed album ‘Anipintiros’ in 2014, making him a household name from Berlin to Buenos Aires, and from Great-Britain to Georgia. 

Georgia’s Tblisi is one of the remarkable places abroad where Darko has found a deeper connection with the local crowd. The fearless determination and graceful open-mindedness of Bassiani’s techno community have been an inspiration in both his DJ sets and productions. It makes perfect sense for him to release his most diverse Tripeo album to date on the club’s esteemed label. Further exploring the crossroads between fierceness and vulnerability, ‘Green Is the New Red’ incorporates experimental escapades like electro and ambient. Relentless and emotionally charged, this is Tripeo at his most compelling.

"Sound systems are really what move me." The up-and-coming techno artist talks about the physicality of sound and how psychedelics inform his work in the studio.

What makes a good artist? In this RA Exchange, British DJ and producer Andrew Shobeiri, AKA Rene Wise, reflects on being a relatively new name in the scene and considers the success that ultimately comes with time and experience. "There's never a point where you're done," he says.

While Shobeiri is only a few years into his career, the up-and-comer already knows how to draw a crowd. He has finely tuned a highly kinetic and hypnotic techno sound that's brought him legions of fans and bookings on the world's top club and festival lineups. He divulges the ingredients that go into a Rene Wise set, including sound sources from genres beyond the club, like salsa, Iranian radif and the strange orchestration of Steve Reich. He also talks about his experience with psychedelics—which helped lay the groundwork for some of his most formative musical experiences—as well as how sound systems have changed the way he perceives and composes tracks for the dance floor. Hailing from Amsterdam, Bastienne has been making waves with her impeccably laid-down mixes and carefully curated selections. Through chiselled, laser-precise sets that showcase the breadth of her scope and minutely woven floor narratives, Bastienne moves the cursor from straight pumping house jack in Detroit fashion to Birmingham-style techno hybrids, via rowdy electronics and forward-pushing dubs. The result is a propulsive journey across techno music in the broadest sense of the term, with all its sister genres, sub-divisions and offshoots taking center stage by turn as Bastienne ensures the cocktail blends in just nicely. For this next number comes Amsterdam-based DJ/Producer Grace Dahl, a top-notch talent with a techno heritage. Some of her early years were spent listening to her dad spin records in Spain (the place her rave-loving Hungarian father and Finnish mother then called home), a teasing precursor to subsequent chapters in her tale. A later date saw her move to the Dutch capital: here at 18, she started playing local venues, refining her method and catching the eye of stalwart party series Vault Sessions, where she took up a high-octane residency. In the decade since the pieces have really fallen into place: she’s played Berghain, Awakenings, Boiler Room and a notorious b2b set with her dad at Amsterdam’s Basis. She’s also released her debut EP Dark Side of Desire and a number of follow ups on labels like Amelie Lens’ EXHALE and Frenzy Recordings. Moving forward to the speed of her productions, her very own imprint SDT (Serial Disc Touchers) saw daylight in 2024, a channel for her unfolding prophecy, featuring familiar names like François X and Julian Müller. And it’s a good one. Her sound skims across hard groove and traditional techno, rolling bouts of rhythm and sound that offer a palette you have to feel in the gut. It’s hypnotic, powerful, frenzied stuff, a cavalcade of masterful beats that won’t slow down for a soul. For Bassiani Podcast 256, Dahl brings every one of her razor sharp wits to the table and delivers an hour long blend of staggering scale, pure-blood techno made to measure from her studio base.
