Today we revisit a 1971 talk by Dr. John C. Lilly: physician, neuroscientist, tireless psychonaut, and one of the most audacious explorers of consciousness in the twentieth century.
John Lilly was a frequent teacher at Esalen and a close friend of Esalen co-founder Dick Price.  He begins teaching at Esalen as early as 1968, focusing on what he called the human biocomputer and lecturing in part on “isolation, solitude, and confinement experiments.” 
Lilly is widely known for three things; first, he invented the first isolation tank — a dark and silent vessel filled with a saline solution that is meant to suspend the body and expose the mind to itself. He made his first one in 1954. Second, Lilly was convinced of the possibility of interspecies communication, notably between dolphins and homo sapiens. And finally, Lilly was an early experimenter with ketamine, from a psychedelic point of view, an interest that ultimately led to an addiction which drove him quite mad. 
However, during this talk from 1971, he is in great form, speaking about the concept and practice of Satori: the instantaneous awakening, the shock of direct perception.

The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie goes deep with the artists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and visionaries who are making the world a more libertarian—or at least a more interesting—place by challenging worn-out ideas and orthodoxies.

Today's guests are Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jon Shenk and former Navy SEAL Marcus Capone. Shenk is co-director, with Bonni Cohen, of the new Netflix documentary In Waves and War, which follows three former Navy SEALs as they use psychedelic-assisted therapy to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries related to their service.

Capone is one of the three main figures in the film. He first used the ultra-powerful substances ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT in 2017 and is the co-founder with his wife Amber of VETS, a nonprofit that helps veterans access psychedelic therapies. He's also CEO of TARA Mind, a company seeking to expand the use of psychedelic-assisted mental health therapies for all Americans. He is featured in the 2023 Reason documentary Welcome to the Psychedelic Renaissance.

They talk with Gillespie about why so many veterans and everyday Americans could benefit from psychedelic therapy and discuss the challenges of depicting both the grim realities of war and the otherworldly experiences of tripping on ibogaine, which some call the "Mount Everest of psychedelics." They also discuss why the Trump administration and an unlikely bipartisan group of legislators may well help usher in an era of legalized psychedelics.

I made this song about a creature I saw in a forest at dusk. I put my hand against a boulder and began to feel an ancient beat, and these glyphs appeared. I turned to look into the dark forest, hearing a distant wailing in the back of my head, and for a brief second I saw the man. He was about 15 feet tall with several appendages and eyes, and he was bent backward in a horseshoe shape, howling. There are things out there that I didn't know existed.

Ralph Cree has several projects that he is involved in.

Firstly, Undulus is the artist name of Ralph Cree, a Multi-intrumentalist from Dorset. Ralph has been composing, recording and producing his own music since the mid 1990's, playing the vast majority of instruments himself. He has called on the musical skills of the occasional friend.

Ralph studied Ethno-Musicology at The School of Oriental and African Studies in London, hence the musical influences behind Undulus are very diverse - ranging from Electro, Dance, World, Jazz, Classical, Funk. So, in this sense the music is very contemporary, simultaneously drawing inspiration from the music of all cultures and periods of history. 

Secondly, The Crees: A Husband and Wife Musical Duo (Ralph Cree and Dizzi Dulcimer) who delight in creating magical melodies that speak directly to the heart. We play a selection of unusual acoustic instruments including, Hammered Dulcimer, Hang, Halo, Thumb Piano,Tank Drum, Metallophone, Piano, and a variety of World Percussion.

This Crees debut album "Kenosis" is a very chilled-out sonic and melodic journey, perfect for contemplation and deep relaxation. In addition to being enjoyed at home, Kenosis creates a soothing environment for Yoga and Meditation classes, and Natural Therapies such as Massage. As well as playing our instruments, we recorded every sound ourselves, including all the nature sounds, which were recorded on location in the wild places of the West Country.

Thirdly, Ralph is the Co-Founder of The Magic Drum Orchestra who fuse a passion for Brazilian music, heavy drums and percussion with a love of modern dance beats. Their sound has influences from dubstep, drum & bass and hip hop fused with batucada, samba and afrobeat.

Lastly, Ralph created the Zen Ambient Sample Pack released by Loopmasters. This sample pack is for making super-chilled music.

Making songs with my guitar and bass, but getting into synthesizers.
