Neptunian Influence, Sixty-One | Featuring @cyberfab

FABiOLA is a Miami based DJ/producer with roots in Detroit. Her sound explores new and origins of dance music, with depths of acid and bass. She is known to have a versatile style and love for funky robotic rhythms. She recently joined forces with other local DJs to run Juicy Fruit - a monthly queer dance party on Miami Beach. Regardless of time or space, FABiOLA invokes a Midwest flair to every set.

Krake Festival Panel: Club Culture & Disability

My set for Berlin-based @refugeworldwide aired during the last days of summer (12/09/2023). It's an ambient session with a bit of downtempo, including some of my favorite tunes for a deep state of mind.

Refuge Worldwide: Tarde Sonora with Koscoy

African Head Charge is a legendary psychedelic dub outfit who have recently returned to their home label On-U Sound with A Trip To Bolgatanga, their first new album in 12 years. As always it finds the peerless Adrian Sherwood at the controls and joins the dots between what the collective has done before and what they are doing now, all with a distinctly Ghanian twist. The signature drums and chants remain at the core of the album of course, as well as plenty of other thrilling new sonic concoctions on keys, guitar, percussion, strings, vocals, kologo and more. It's the latest chapter in a fascinating story that has already seen them release some 16 albums since its inception in 1981. 

This week's mix is a deep dive into the uniquely melon-twisting sounds of African Head Charge. Sherwood's mastery at the controls means sound is twisted and contorted, dubbed out and reverb-rich from start to finish. Traditional dub sounds melt away into ghoulish vocal passages, unhinged instrumentals come and go and the collective's signature sense of dark soul and mystic ritual holds the whole thing together in a spellbinding fashion.

"Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio.

Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years.

But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of  jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. Aux 88’s live performances very much feel like a rousing old-school Hip-hop show. Though the latter certainly has legitimate claims on Aux 88’s sound, so do Techno, Miami Bass, Trip-hop and Funk. Still, the Detroit-based pair never aims to fit a narrow definition, but rather strives to make people dance, by any means necessary.

Central American born Silent Servant has performed worldwide in clubs from LA, Berlin to Osaka. A chance meeting with Karl O'Conner in 1999 would establish a friendship that would open the door to the Sandwell District label in 2006. Silent Servant's sound is a reinterpretation of early '80s post-punk electronics, paired with the deep, metallic sounds of Basic Channel and Downwards.
