Have you noticed that in most albums of African music from the 70s/80s there is a reggae track? Groups not known for this style but who have all tried to resume, with more or less success, this tropical music from the so-called third world. Reggae, like rap, has its roots in African music, and the blues of black people. It is a one-hour tribute that we offer you here, after having carefully chosen "off-track" titles by artists known for other styles. It shows how African musicians interprets the Jamaican riddims but also how motherland rhythms influenced these descendants of slaves deported to the West Indies.

Just like saudade, morabeza cannot be translated into a word: it is a lifestyle that combines friendliness, kindness, and a sense of welcome. Anyone who has visited Cape Verde will tell you that they have tasted Cape Verdean morabeza!

This month we are paying tribute to the breathtaking music of this small archipelago located off the coast of Dakar. It's incredible to see the number of records and styles that come from these small Creole islands with a complex history: colonized by the Portuguese, forcefully populated by African slaves, the music of Cape Verde has produced some of the best of these two worlds. Funana, Coladeira, Morna, are some of the rhythms that we explore through original vinyl records from the 70s to 80s. Spread and disseminated throughout the world by its numerous diaspora, the music of Cape Verde has blended with all styles, and served as an important vector of messages of emancipation and struggle during the years of struggle for independence against the Portuguese colonialist oppressor. We have a special thought for Americo Brito who recently passed away.

Our second On-U Debut of the year comes via another excellent retrospective round-up, this time with the added bonus of  Trevor Jackson personally rifling through the archives for the deepest of deep cuts. Science Fiction Dancehall Classics clocks in at a monumental 143 minutes, running the gamut from bright funk to a pair of tracks about drilling equipment (genuinely). It features no actual dancehall, but does come stacked with early experiments and rarities from the likes of  Neneh Cherry, Atmosfear and about a dozen or so Adrian Sherwood aliases – of which The Circuit is one, alongside long-time collaborator Steve Beresford.
 
This entirely unheard take on the 30 year old "Loudspeaker" comes from a thrillingly fertile, open-ended period in UK music, capturing the spirit of the era well. Kicking off with the kind of stuttering hook a Paul's Boutique track could be built out of a few years later, the track incorporates chintzy synth work, dub sensibilities, scratchy messthetics and proto-rap juggling and scratching. It's clangorous, but also surprisingly carefree; a true metal dance.
