Finest Morning

Priori (@priori-ties) has always explored a wide range of techno from dense and introspective to more joyous, often against the backdrop of technological possibilities. He hails from Canada and has been prolific since first emerging with two full-lengths to his name on his own NAFF label. They pair dubby undercurrents with crystalline melodies and contain the sort of unresolved tensions that keep you locked in for the ride. This weekend he plays Dekmantel Naarm 2024 but first has served up this new mi for us.

Priori says this is the first dance mix he's done in a long time, adding "It's an hour and a half of fresh rhythms and rave sounds that I recorded while on tour in Australia. It features a few tracks I have been playing a lot lately and some forthcoming bits by myself and some friends." In just over 90 minutes he works through a rollercoaster of deep techno rhythms that are firmly focused on the future and flow as fluidly as water.

Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement. 
 
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
 
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
 
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over  these years! All the best for the future!

++ How and where was the mix recorded? ++
It was recorded at my studio using other people's music.

++ What was the idea behind the mix? ++
The idea was to have bass orientated theme but with a melodic flow.

++ How (if in any way) is the mix influenced by Cuba? ++
Most of the melodies I picked I feel have a latin flavour to them.

++ What excites you most about the journey to Santiago? ++
I'm looking forward to going somewhere on the planet that is not American influenced. I grew up listening to Mongo Santamaria. Cuba is just across the way from where my parents come from: Jamaica. I think there are deep ties throughout the Caribbean. I'm sorry I'm not a religious person but I'm into deeper feelings. I'm going there to taste the spirit. The musicians I've heard are unbelievably talented and I believe I have something to share.

++ Are you going to be preparing for the trip in any way? ++
Yes, I'm bringing all my music, ready to jam.

SINCHI is a collective of musicians, producers, artists and writers searching for those all too brief moments of truth through their chosen medium.

In their own words; ‘ Psychonauts musically stimulated from spiritual adventures of the heart. We are inspired by the interface of man and machine and the manipulation of the human condition via the symbiotic partnering of digital circuits and algorithms’.

Following their break through release ‘Exhale' on Amsterdam's Night noise label in 2015 with the Gemini Brothers and FLVN, the collective has quickly grown a large following for its unique, ethereal and constantly evolving sound. This year they have a multiple releases lined up, featuring remixes from acclaimed artists such as Moscoman, Heretic and Oli Warriner.

The late summer of 2016 will also see the launch of their own club experience 'Altered States’ in Amsterdam and a groundbreaking music compilation working with live recordings of aboriginal music from Australia.
