While not a category I’ve really seen anyone else apply to this sound, for me, it’s the first word that comes to my mind when I hear these uneven, pulsating, off-kilter complexities that this entire mix is comprised of. There’s confusing time signatures, wonky percussion, entrancing pads and synths, and a rhythm structure that sometimes breaks itself before it comes back together. To say this mix was a challenge to construct is an understatement, but I’m exceptionally pleased with the result. Succumb to a tidal wave of rhythmic hypnosis with mix one of “The Arsonist & The Architect” - Undulate.

Whilst a fair percentage of Panorama Bar and Berghain residents customarily have more than a decade worth of history and experience playing at the two renowned clubs, Ostgut's roster in recent years has since expanded to host a handful of newer DJs and producers. Kobosil, Somewhen and Etapp Kyle have all been added over the last five years as well as more recently, Roi Perez, an Israeli selector who's called Berlin his home since moving to the city in 2013. Raised in southern Israel in the coastal city of Ashkelon, a move to Tel Aviv in his early twenties found him quickly immersed in the thriving queer party scene. Here he connected and found himself a residency at a party called PAG, a local night he's described as a 'special atmosphere' akin to Glastonbury's NYC Downlow.

A change on a personal level led him to Berlin, where small bar gigs led to invitations by nd_baumecker to play Lab.Oratory, which in turn led to invitations to play Panorama Bar. His first set at the club, called upon three hours in advance, was a 10 hour closing set. A rare oppurtunity that would see most DJs buckling from the nerves, Roi Perez was handed a residency soon after. His Truancy Volume, charting his way through Truant favourites by Hodge, Avalon Emerson and Helena Hauff, showcases is apt technical skill and knowledge as a Panorama Bar legend on the rise. We caught up with Perez to discuss his time in Tel Aviv, his move to Berlin and his now numerous residencies.

The attention the Amsterdam scene currently enjoys is, in no small part, down to the tireless work of Sandrien. She’s been there since the nineties, with residences at Trouw and now De School, close ties to Rush Hour and also through her own parties, which have been bringing the likes of DJ Nobu and Blawan to the city for years. Her uncompromising techno style has taken her around the world and to labels like Ben Sims’ Theory, amongst others. In short, she is a living local legend.

Sandrien takes a long view on this mix, starting with an escapist ambient selection that gets your attention. It transports you to a different world before the DJ puts her foot down and brings the grooves. Things remain decidedly cinematic and intergalactic over the course of the next hour, with various shades of deep techno eventually ending up in a place of ambient beauty not far from where you started. It’s a rounded mix that begs to be played over and over.

As one of our few residents, @steffenbennemann has played many sets in Olganitz - about half of them in numerous collaborations with friends. For our very last edition, he hooked up with @polooo who is also a firm Nachti favourite. Starting right before sunset they took us on a massive trip into the night that got the whole beach raving like there is no tomorrow.

“In the lead up to the due date for our No Way Back sets, I fell ridiculously sick with the flu. I barely was able to get out of bed for about 6 days. As soon as I was able, I rushed to my friends Will & Sarah Joy's flat here in Berlin to lay down this recording. There wasn't much time to prepare, so I just picked the tracks I wanted to use, and as the great Claude Young once said "I just turned on the machines and they told me where to go!" On my mind the whole time was the utter turmoil going on in the U.S, maybe even more than what we were living through here in Germany, which heavily influenced my selections of music. I knew for sure that I wanted to open with that nthng track, but the decision to play "This Is America" at the end was made only a minute or 2 before I played it. I had wanted to play it 2 years earlier at NWB, but chickened out for some weird reason. Now felt like the perfect time. Magically, it matched the energy of the global protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd only about 18 hours later. The note I wrote at the end was also straight from the heart. At the time, I was betting we would all be descending onto Detroit for Memorial Day 2021. Unfortunately, I don't know if that is something to bet on now — only time will tell, I guess. Until then, enjoy this set (and all the others that I.T. is releasing from this broadcast!) and hopefully we will see each other safely on a dancefloor somewhere and sometime in the future — the sooner, the better in my opinion.
