Day Off Radio: Best Of 2015

Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th January)Kornél Kovács steps up for Hour 2 and he had this to say about his mix;
"I've been doing screw house mixes since 2005 when me and el barbaro del ritmo launched the short-lived "codeine talking" mix series. i do them mainly for my own enjoyment although a few have been published before. it's an interesting process, finding out which tunes sound good at 90 bpm (very often not the ones you would think). with these house tunes, some of them will turn into something like classic boom bap hiphop beats but with a slight uncanny feel to them, others end up with this reggaeton vibe, other times they sound almost like industrial music. quite often pure dance tracks get more of a song-like quality. also you zoom in on a lot of small details, which, if nothing else, is really interesting from a producer's point of view. the really sweet suzanne kraft towards the end, which is forthcoming on the kitjen label, is something i've been listening to pitched down since i got it. now, when i play it in a club, the real tempo sounds wrong (but great). same thing with the moomin track, always listen to that nice and slow like this. strangely, i've never tried pitching "szikra" down until now - sounds pretty cool I think. anyway, enjoy the mix and r.i,p. dj screw."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th January) It's another label takeover this week with Axel Boman and Kornél Kovács from Studio Barnhus sharing deck duties. Alongside Petter Nordkvist they've been running the Swedish label since 2010 and we get a taste of some forthcoming Studio Barnhus material. Their productions, remixes and DJ sets have always been of the highest quality and it's no exception this week. Axel Boman takes care of Hour 1 and he told us;

"I usually record mixes with stuff from my vinyl collection because i dont have cdjs. i think its good that i dont have them since it forces me to be creative with that format. but sometimes i miss being able to mix unreleased stuff so i decided to go outside of my comfort zone on this one. not too far outside since i used ableton and 2 channels on my e&s mixer so it felt vaguely familiar. the music is mostly Studio Barnhus related stuff, some upcoming releases and some golden oldies. a big thank you to Young Marco for the intro track, of course it takes a dutchman at redlight records to dig up the best swedish music, haha."

New York based dub king Brendon Moeller was so kind to make this amazing hypnotic podcast for our beloved BALANS series. Brendon has been making waves in the EDM scene for almost 20 years now and is well known for his Beat Pharmacy and Echologist monnikers. And with his imprint Steadfast he delivers the highest quality dancefloor music around nowadays. A new album is due in april on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label, but first he will drop an Echologist remix on Wolfskuil Ltd by the end of march!

As always we had a small Q&A with the South African master:

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

I have done a remix for Wolfskuil artist Roger Gerressen and for ESHU on their recently launched imprint with the same name.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Eat well, exercise, sleep and only smoke good weed and stick with beer!

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

Once upon a Thursday afternoon, a middle-aged man decided to embark on a creative mission. That mission would be to lay down approximately 60 minutes of groovy psychedelic electronic music that would take the listeners on a journey that would enable them to transcend time and space.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

The mix is the first mix I completed incorporating a modified korg monotribe. It was done in my home studio using ableton and a UC-33e controller. Recorded in one take, no rehearsing.

05.Were do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have an album dropping on EDLX in April and will be touring Europe all of April and May. The first single from the album features mixes by Tommy Four Seven and Jonas Kopp.

We have a very special guest for this episode. Man of the moment and one of the artists that sets the course for techno as we speak, Shifted, is on duty for episode 19. Noone knows exactly who is behind this mysterious monnniker, all we know he is no newcomer to the electronic arena. His debutalbum 'Crossed Paths' on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver label, is a stunning collection of tracks: rich in textures and with an almost physical ambiance. He made this podcast especially for his appearance at the first edition of BALANS at Melkweg on friday the 6th of july. Enjoy the darkness and make sure you don't miss him in Amsterdam!

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.

05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

Her night IMPRINT in TrouwAmsterdam has raised the bar for our nation capital and she released the fantastic 'Haters' EP on our sisterlabel Wolfskuil Ltd only a couple of weeks ago. 1.What is your relationship with Balans?

I know Darko for a while now and just released my EP on Wolfskuil. I've played at his parties and he played at mine. Really like what he's doing as an artist and with his labels, so happy to have a release on his label. 

2.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you  
would like to share with us night folks?

I like to work out, I cycle a lot and go to the gym. Besides that I try to eat healthy. It helps me to stay focussed and feel good.

3.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

At the moment I'm reorganizing my record collection and I found some records I wanted to play again. So it turned out a deep techno mix with some of the older tracks and some new stuff.  

4.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

I used 2 Technics SL-1210MK2 and an Allen & Heath Mixer.

5.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?


The 30th of march I will be doing the next Imprint party at Trouw with Surgeon. Besides that I will be playing at nice parties in Holland and abroad. And at the moment I'm working on new tracks in my new studio.
