Ancient Methods was born from the union of Conrad Protzmann and Michael Wollenhaupt, two Germans dedicated to produce techno without any kind of complexes who also sign their solo works as Baeks and Trias. Eventually, and after the departure of Wollenhaupt, Protzmann decides to stay with the solo project.

His career, based on the release of several EPs, most of them on his own label of the same name, begins to atomize with collaborations on other publishing platforms such as Sonic Groove, RSB, Fondation Sonore, aufnahme + wiedergabe or Hands Productions.

Emerging as Phase Fatale in 2014, Berlin-based DJ, producer and label owner, Hayden Payne is rewriting the discourse of Techno with his cross-pollination of gnarly basslines, sensual narratives and mind-control mechanics. Demonstrating his vision through an authentic, highly curated sonic-lens of techno, Payne’s rhythmic excursions draw on both his roots in the New York and Berlin underground as well as his reputable experience performing to dancefloors globally. Exemplified by long-standing tenures as a resident for esteemed institutions such as Berghain as well as KHIDI in Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Payne demonstrates a resolute understanding of harnessing club synergy across his productions and DJ sets. 

With three full length albums under his belt, including the 2020 sophomore release ‘Scanning Backwards’ on Berghain’s Ostgut Ton, Payne’s sonic signature pushes the boundaries of techno sensibilities and reflects the zeitgeist whilst staying true to his own vision. Wasting no time since his solo project’s inception to showcase his expert sonic ability, Payne has toured globally performing at renowned clubs and festivals worldwide, releasing numerous records on labels including Jealous God, Ostgut Ton, and his own label BITE. 

Payne co-launched the BITE imprint in 2018 as a means to platform cutting-edge sound production across a diverse roster of international artists. Along with fellow Soft Crash protagonist Pablo Bozzi pioneering ‘Italo Body Music’, BITE’s seminal synthesis of curated techno solidifies the label as a tour de force taste-maker within electronic music with showcases worldwide including Berghain and their 5 year anniversary compilation ‘Shedding Skin’ in 2023. 

Hailing from post-punk roots, Payne draws on his depth of musical knowledge and multitude of influences. His merging of nuanced references and high concept narratives remain geared towards the dancefloor at its core, subtleties of his multifarious sonic palette act as the foundations for his layered wall of sound.

Where to start with @ancient-methods . . . .

I remember back in 2007 after a trip to Hardwax I came back with several coloured 12's with not a great deal on them bar Ancient Methods and 1st, 2nd & 3rd Method on the labels. Upon listening I was immediately hooked and thought at the time this was the most exciting music I had heard coming out of Berlin for quite a while. Fast forward 2 years and the duo (as they were at the time) were on their way to London to play at our 3rd birthday with a load of other Hardwax related artists. Unfortunately they never got to play that set as a couple of nasty chancer thieves literally stole their laptops off the stage before they performed, never to be seen again. The worst thing about this situation was the fact that they both backed up to each other's laptops for their productions which meant a lot of unreleased WIP music was forever lost that morning. 

Needless to say we felt awful but made it as right as we could by giving the profit we made on the night straight to them (along with their fee of course) and Corsica also chipped in a sizeable donation so they were immediately able to buy replacement laptops but it still wrangles me to this day all that lost AM material.

It was however the start of a very long standing relationship between AM & Plex. Michael (bar residents) was the artist that played the most times at our parties  over the years and it became pretty much an annual tradition from our 5th birthday onwards that you would get an Ancient Methods live, dj or hybrid show. He remains a great friend of ours to this day so it's fantastic to finally get one of his sets from Plex out there.

This set is from our 9th birthday and is a really special 90 min journey. Hope you guys like.

Back in August 2024, in the final stretch of summer, Ancient Methods b2b UVB took us on a three-hour ride to the end of time and back. A post-industrial vortex pulled us in, where deep mechanical grooves met tight rhythmic control in a set that was both punishing and hypnotic. The pacing was expertly crafted, grinding tension, explosive peaks, and moments of eerie restraint, all delivered with a raw, analog-driven energy that kept the floor locked in.
