The closing set at the Varden stage is always a special time; Filled with excitement, tears, hugs, and exhaustion, it marks the end of four incredible days at Monument Festival.

This year Japanese maestro Wata Igarashi stepped up and delivered a legendary closing set. A psychedelic vortex of sound thundered across the forest as the dance floor was illuminated in radiant colors and fog, with smiling faces and dancing bodies all around. 

So find your best headphones or sit down in front of your speakers, turn it up, and time travel back to the Forgotten Valley. Guided by our friend, Wata Igarashi. Enjoy.

Monument Festival 2024 : Wata Igarashi

Sandrien is known for her versatile take on techno and igniting dancefloors all around the world from Japan, to Georgia to Berlin and of course Amsterdam, where she was a former resident of the legendary Amsterdam venues De School and its predecessor Trouw. In 2022 Sandrien set the dance floor of Monument Festival ablaze and here now for MNMT 447 she lays down another outstanding mix.

Sandrien shared some words about the mix:

“Thanks for the invite to do a mix for you, I have very fond memories of playing at the festival in 2022! It was a beautiful experience playing in the mountains with sweet, caring staff and visitors! For this podcast I wanted to make a deep techno mix, filled with tracks I’ve never played before, some unreleased tracks and a couple of favorites I currently play in my sets :) Hope you’ll enjoy it!”

Boasting a definite knack for those volatile hotchpotches of big-room-ready jack and a surgical DJing skillset, Mary treats us to a frantic whirlwind of paced-up machine funk and absolutely imparable industrial-inflected maneuvers. Cranking the heat one notch up with every bar, the Dutch DJ certainly knows how to bring dance floors to a simmer and keep crowds under her spell through wave after wave of an uncompromising floor-destroying exposé. A few months after our successful Saüle debut, here we go again for a second round of genre-busting, boundary-pushing sonic exploration. Embracing the Idea of techno as a means of transcending our condition, both as conscious and subconscious beings, this series offers a platform for artists to express themselves with enhanced scope and purpose. For this second installment which will take place on 5 June, RYC invites a trio of musicians who’ve been pushing the envelope of techno and electronics to a broader extent. A name synonymous with bold dynamics and cutting-edge approach, London-based producer Jin Synth will take us on a mind-bending ride down her intricate rhythmic algebra and layers of hypnotic, otherworldly sonics. A jack-of-all-trades whose hybrid, unhindered vision for music has driven to all ends of the techno spectrum, the one and only DJ Pete will join us for a hectic parade of breaks-laden, bass-heavy weapons and dubbed-out tangents. Chief explorer of lushly textured folds and immersive cinematic arcs, dub techno maestro Magna Pia will take over the decks for one of those moments on the dance floor when functional innovation fuses with multi-sensory exaltation.

Reclaim Your City x Säule | DJ Pete

Founding member of Axces Recordings and Danish DJ/producer Kasper Marott returns to the Bassiani airwaves with a Zenaari edition that studies a much more phrenic side of his musical world. Driven by instinct, his work reflects a single minded aversion to commercial orthodoxy and the regular grind of a 40 hour work week: it’s all about feeling and a passion for creating the sounds that have kept him and his Copenhagen crew together, ‘nature, friends, family, home’. Forget the springy beats and dulcet melodies this time round, here is something entirely different and new. In stark contrast to his catalogue of jovial anthems, the likes of breakthrough hit Keflavik and 2021’s Mini Trance, Kasper’s inward-looking work slows those rhythms right down and investigates the possibilities of a sound much more restricted in palette. It’s a surprising turnaround for someone whose name evokes the breezy basslines of open-air jaunts, one packed with vibrating synths, understated instrumentals, and the electronic crackling of a wood fire on a balmy summer night. Zenaari Mix 018 is Kasper Marott like you’ve never heard him before, far from the dancefloor and burdening constraints of a rave context, Zenaari gives his inner world a voice, and the result is a rich, human and deep-toned 67 minute cut recorded in studio for this latest in the series.

Wata Igarashi at Rural Festival Japan 2019

Rural is always a special event for me. Playing in the Japanese mountains in front of my friends, it means a lot. Last year I was on the Sunday night, full of stars, in between Function and Alessandro Cortini. With a 3 hour slot, I had the chance to dive deep and do what I wanted. It was a really positive experience for me so I thought it would be nice to share the recording with you all. Thanks for listening and hope to see you on a dancefloor soon, Wata.
