Traxsource LIVE! #520 Ash Lauryn

We take a trip across the pond for our next podcast, because it comes from the celebrated New York based Detroit that is Mike Servito. Best known for his impressive closing sets, be they at Bunker, where he is resident, or at Berlin’s Panorama Bar, Servito is a passionate vinyl fiend and is said to spend most of his fees on buying more of the stuff. Only in the last year or so has he broken out of local circles in New York and Detroit, and that is purely off the back off his DJing ability because he is not a producer. The DJ sets he does, though, are uncompromising things that he painstakingly researches and puts together for often for a whole week before playing. 

The podcast he has served up for us is just as tight.  It wastes no time in getting down to business and starts with plenty of unhinged acid techno. Of course, the mixing is slick and seamless, records are teased in an out with an expert hand and the beats range from tightly coiled and kinetic to more spaced out and trippy. It’s 90 minutes of expert DJ perfection and proves the Ghostly associate is one of the best there is.

Part two of RA.996 comes from a modern-day house luminary. 

As part of our countdown to RA.1000, a milestone in the 24-year history of RA's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format. The next few editions will pair two acts who compliment each other's strengths, offering a fresh take on a particular community, scene or style.

This week, we're zeroing in on two names who fly the flag high for old-school, US  house—a foundational pillar of the electronic underground. The first half comes from Ron Trent, which you can read more about here. 

On the B-side is Ash Lauryn. Hailing from Detroit, she's a modern-day house savant. Her comprehensive understanding of the genre's history—knowledge gained from the Detroit greats who that inspired her—and her own inimitable blend of old-world soul meets new-school grooves make her a force to be reckoned with. 

A former RA contributor, Lauryn keeps it <i>real</i>, whether in the booth or beyond. A role model to a new generation of DJs, she can just as easily be found teaching workshops at Underground Music Academy in Detroit or sharing tricks of the trade in the green room at some of the best clubs in the world.

An unwavering champion of Black dance music, the Atlanta resident makes it a point to play as much Black American music as possible, as she told us in her 2019 podcast. Not much has changed since then. Her contribution to RA.996 spans favourites like Larry Heard, Mood II Swing, Byron The Aquarius, Moodymann, Ron Trent and plenty of Detroit heavy-hitters.

Listened to together, both mixes are a powerful snapshot of house's timeless elegance and, most importantly, understated yet innately euphoric joy.

DJ Storm: Closing set @ SunAndBass 2016 ft. MC Fats, MC Moose & Cleveland Watkiss

Next up on Aus Music is the welcome return of a good friend and label regular - the ever ascendant Marquis Hawkes. Having released 4 EPs on Aus thus far, he makes his return in the form of a blazing, floor-focused 2 track EP which sits neatly with previous outings on the label.

‘The Basement Is Burning’ takes it’s name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in Hawkes’ home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a 5th floor balcony. Having ensured the safety of his family, he made a dash across Berlin to make a 10am live show, a few days later with the power back on ‘The Basement Is Burning’ was born.

The title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armoured with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. Bursting synths are introduced before ducking strings chords bring the track to an ecstatic conclusion. ‘Tower Block Boogie’ then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

"I wanted to make a mix that is most representative of what I've been playing as club sets over the years but using new tracks. I usually tend to put together really different things when I sit at home and work on music because I'm really affected by my direct surroundings and this applies to my own productions as well that you can hear towards the end of the mix. Some parts are quite playful but overall I feel like it paints the right picture" - @mobilegirl

This July we're bringing Helena Hauff to the US for her first stateside club shows. On July 20th we're heading to Cambridge, Boston. Check out this mix by Make It New residents Baltimoroder and Coralcola, and a Q&A with Alex Maniatis, the clubs booker, below.

RA: How would you describe your music policy?

AM: Our music policy is more than genres it's about setting the right atmosphere. Make It New is about feeling refreshed. We won't play the ego game and we program artists who care most about the music and the vibe.  Right now we have 3 local residents Baltimoroder, Coralcola, and Mike Swells plus international residents George Fitzgerald and Martyn for 2017.  We book house, we book techno, we book disco we book everything in between.
 
RA: What makes a great party? 

AM: The right crowd, a lot of love, and letting the music do the talking.  It's not one person's party it's our crowd's party.  We are in a small dark box with a good soundsystem. That's it. The goal is for everyone to get lost in the moment every Thursday plain and simple.  One week you may hear our residents go on for 5hrs playing spacey techno music or maybe another you will hear Antal play a life-changing disco set or maybe Midland will make you cry (in a good way).  We Make It New every week with a sweet touch of reassuring familiarity. Show up early and stay late, that's the move.  

RA: What does your party stand for, and how do you express that? 

AM: Make It New stands for something inclusive yet it is not for everyone.  It should go without saying but if you are sexist, racist, or homophobic this night is not for you and you are not gonna make any friends here. Sorry but true. Each week we gather we dance and we just are together. The party is a journey and is based on a basic trust. Trust the DJ, trust the audience, trust the staff. We are all one and it makes for a beautiful thing. There's a lot of bad news out there right now and the sense of community is greater than we can all vocalize.  Sometimes being in a dark room dancing with good sound and friends watching out for each other is what we need. 

RA: What’s the greatest problem facing club culture in your city? 

AM: Lack of understanding of the culture and little support of the creative economy. Boston is growing rapidly but less is being done for the arts. It's sad really when we see massive corporations moving into the city for tax breaks but yet nothing changes for arts culture except the costs go up all around us.  Also, Boston historically is portrayed as a rock town but if you look under the skin there is a lot more warmth in what we and our peers do than any local media will ever cover.  On any given night you can find great local selectors and exciting parties bringing amazing underground acts to town but no local media is talking about it and the city is not very supportive.   
Listen, we don't  pretend to know it all and we are still figuring this out.  We have a lot to learn and we want to grow. There are a lot of people in this town rooted in house / disco/ dnb/ techno and they enjoy each other and the culture the fact is, the city should be supporting this more. RA: What’s your favourite memory of the night?

AM: Too many to choose just one but at the top of these was when we first brought DJ Sprinkles in a snowstorm.  It was freezing there was a hell of a lot of snow all over the city preventing most from driving yet we danced we like never danced before. Not matter the elements everyone found a way to the club and showed up at 9pm. Terre played all night long and the place was one giant love fest.  The entire club was in tears at the end and it was hard to leave the room that night. I personally think I hugged Terre for 5 minutes without letting go after being so thankful seeing how happy the crowd was with one and other. It was such a beautiful moment.

Portable is a global citizen of South African origin, he grew up in London, resides in Berlin, and performs around the world. His journey shaped his taste in music and moreover his ability to be enormously versatile behind the decks. Rounding out our four week tribute to the some of the pivotal disc jockeys of the  Atlanta dance music scene, I think we've possibly saved the best for last. Kai Alcé may require little introduction for many but for those that are finally catching on to this maestro behind the decks the payoff is worth it. For over twenty years this man has been honing his craft behind the decks and in the studio. Whether it's releases on FXHE, Mahogany Music, Real Soon or his own imprint NDATL the over arching theme has been deep and engrossing. And that theme is no different with this mix created for us. Weaving together the deepest and funkiest of house selections and not afraid of veering towards a little acid, Kai pulls you into the depths of his sonic environment and will have you yearning for more as the last chords of this mix trail off into the distance.

The last few years have seen Volvox rightfully come of age on the international scene. The self-styled “techno disciple” has been shaping and driving the Brooklyn underground ever since moving to NYC from Boston in 2011, but has been hosting events and laying down tough sets for more than a decade. A couple of residencies in that time have seen her push both an acid house sound and a harder techno outlook while she is now at home everywhere from De School to Berghain.

In this searing 80 minute selection, Volvox tears through a range of electro sounds that race along with a high speed funk. Form punchy bass driven jams to visceral industrial and on to a sci-fi future, it’s a brilliantly widescreen but cohesive overview of a genre that is made for dancing.
