"If a record is falling apart at the seams, I'll probably like it." Recorded live at Houghton 2024, our latest Playing Favourites episode sees the London artist discussing the beautiful leftfield music that's soundtracked his life.

British DJ and producer Call Super brings some colour to the depths of winter with this week's RA Exchange. The multifaceted artist has released music on Houndstooth, Hessle Audio, fabric, Dekmantel and the label he co-runs with Parris, can you feel the sun, becoming known for a deep yet always party-ready sound that combines house, UK funky, tech house and plenty more besides.

In this interview, recorded at last year's Houghton Festival, he talks to RA's managing editor, Carlos Hawthorn,  as part of our flagship live series, Playing Favourites. Among his choices are the music he listened to as a child; the record that inspired his passion for DJing; an artist who changed his perspective on music at large; and more practical songs he deploys in sets to refresh a crowd. The territory he covers is huge, from tech house and acid house to contemporary classical, experimental leftfield, abstract percussion and choral music. There are some tracks, he claims, that only work in certain contexts, but if played at the right time, "they send people." Listen to the episode in full. – Chloe Lula

Jo Johnson is a British musician whose three-decade journey spans punk, techno, and contemplative electronic minimalism. A former guitarist for the influential 90s riot grrrl band Huggy Bear, she later immersed herself in the underground techno scene,  joining the Bleep43 collective in 2001 and founding its label. Jo’s solo work explores immersive and emotive sonic landscapes through synthesizers and effects, influenced by pioneering women in electronic music. Her albums have been released on Further Records, Going In, Mysteries of the Deep, and Castles in Space. She is a regular performer at festivals and venues like Freerotation, The Purcell Room, Cafe Oto, and Parallel.

In 2025, Jo launched Alterations, an evolving album project released track-by-track on Bandcamp, each piece accompanied by exclusive materials for subscribers. She has collaborated with pianist Hilary Robinson, releasing experimental works on 9128.live and performing at events like Daylight Music. As a DJ, Jo has appeared on platforms such as Refuge Worldwide, Monument Waves, and Music for Programming. Beyond music, she has contributed to a Huggy Bear book project compiling the band’s zines and history. Jo also co-curates Bleep43’s deep listening events in unique spaces across London, championing boundary-pushing artists in ambient and experimental sound.

reflecting upon his live set on the saturday, dan said,

"i'm feeling a lot of tension in parties, enjoying ourselves, meeting incredible people in beautiful places, alongside so much geo-political despair and hopelessness, and most notably of course, genocide. i think there is a need to seek escape from this, in many of the ways we know how, but we must also not ignore the abuses we see. we should embrace the beauty and love that some of us are able to feel simultaneously with our grief, fear and compassion. and with this mix i wanted at least to try and touch on some of the challenges we face personally and communally, as well as the sadness, and hopefully some of the joy as well, the bubbling of optimism we feel when we unite against evil. we need to be aware of these contradictions, and feel everything as much as we are able to, and hopefully from there imagine a better way, accepting the light and dark and making steps to a way of living. i tried not to labour this too much, but it was very present in my mind when preparing the set, and when playing it - of course to some this is just a mix, but it's a form of communication that you're free to experience however you see fit x"

The next Deep Mind Music mix comes from Chicago’s Hi-Vis, who is behind the wonderful deep listening mix series @beyondbelow. I have found a lot of solace in Beyond / Below mixes, each one takes the listener on a carefully crafted journey, filled with poignant emotions and mind-expanding music. 

It was looking to Beyond / Below that in some ways inspired me to expand Deep Mind Music into a mix series. It feels meaningful to create and curate a space for people to put together deeply personal sonic narratives in a deep listening format for them to share with the world.

This mix from Hi-Vis feels like being carried on a soft billowing breeze high above gentle rolling hills. The mix subtly shifts through moods and textures, each song delicately linked to the next. It kind of feels like my brain unwinding and making sense of the tangle of thoughts we end up accumulating through daily life. Gently giving each thought space before setting it down. 

She says about this mix:

“I play sound to heal myself, to learn better how to heal myself, hoping that if I share what I learn, it might heal others too - particularly those who need it most. I want to comfort, but there is always strain and tension that can’t be avoided or ignored. My intention is to summon a psychic space that allows you to drift, to confront discomfort and dissonance openly and without fear, so you can experience even greater relief, or even euphoria. All these songs have had a profound effect on me this way, and I tried to play them similar to how they unfold and resonate in my head. 

Recorded on two turntables, two CDJs and a mixer at my apartment in Chicago. I bought my copy of the last record in the mix, Vainqueur’s Solanus, from my friend Justin Aulis Long. You can hear it’s well worn, but the crackles enhance its aura and I love it all the more.”

I really relate to creating ambient mixes as a space for people to experience emotions in, to observe and then transcend them, and I feel like Hi-Vis has created such a space with this mix for all those who listen to it.

"Unlike the other daytime curators, Lena Willikens chose to open La Sucrière's impressive main hall on Friday, playing alongside her usual back-to-back partner Vladimir Ivkovic. The two looked relaxed behind the decks, swaying, smoking and sometimes smiling. The crowd, less dense than during the other headliners due to the early start, were also in a good mood, using the extra space to feel out each beat of the slower selections. Much of the two hours felt like existing in the lagging moment of a sci-fi movie, just before a spaceship launches into warp speed (in a good way, I promise)."

Seattle-based CCL (@ccl-tuf) is a DJ, promoter and curator. They’re a founding member of TUF, a local collective focused on community-building and creating visibility for underrepresented artists in dance music. Known for bold musical choices, CCL blends a caleidoscope of rhythms, usually playing a mixture of deep, immersive breaks, electro, techno and bass music. When we asked rising (and rising) star Peach to curate a night with us on November 1st 2019, she reached out to long-time friend and fellow Torontonian Club Fitness, and De School resident, upsammy. The latter, whose refined taste and genre-elasticity has been quietly garnering her a cult following in recent years, steps up to the plate from TPF–007, a live recording from her three hour warm up set that night. 

The result is one of the most imaginative and masterful early door sets we've had the pleasure to host at Pickle. Departing from the high-octane / tempo sounds upsammy often champions, expect a winding journey through dub, experimental bass, oddball techno and plenty more besides.

Welcome back friends, new and old. You are about to tune into another segment of ‘get to know the DJ’ and this week's guest is, the formidable Darcy Justice! A star on the rise, her taste and aesthetic years beyond her, her set at IV19 (IV will be back! I promise) is a personal highlight of mine (which is immortalised as Butter Sessions #83 TIP!!!) her consistent A+ output on Hope Street Radio, and a mess of other mix’s she’s put out are all of a high caliber. When she can serve music fresh to the public again there will be nothing that can stop her. 

The mix! Fuck! It's beautiful! 2 hours of absolute power, shifting from weight to weight and actually mixing tracks (RIP), the ebb of the grounding and flow of the joy is absolutely immaculate. Within the first 4 tracks, you can get a gauge of what’s to come, nostalgic banger’s through fresh eyes mixed in with pulsing beautiful neo-soul. The rhythmic throb throughout works not only as a slingshot,  but it also relieves tension through the comfortability of the all known pace of life and the dance floor we ever so miss. The mix comes perfectly with the shift into nicer weather and hopefully with the chance to see your friends, eat with your friends, dance with your friends. The perfect backyard picnic soundtrack, hopefully, gets a run at every kick on over summer. I’ll leave the rest up to you.
