Ben ‘Benny L’ Love is one of the most promising newcomers in drum & bass, and his recent EP on Metalheadz Platinum has also made him the youngest artist on Goldie’s imprint. The story of how this transpired pretty much reads like a fairy tale in drum & bass folklore. The story begins when the fledgling producer sent his freshly minted track Low Blow to the one of the best respected heads in the game, Randall. The man Randall then dropped it at one of the biggest D&B gatherings in the calendar, Sun & Bass festival, when an excited Goldie jumped on the decks and instigated a rewind for the killer cut. It wasn’t signed right away though, it was when Goldie got hold of a video of the scene after someone had filmed the incident, the Metalheadz don called up Love to sign him for an EP on his offshoot label. It’s the kind of stuff that dreams are made of.

Sonically speaking, Love is probably best known for his use of heavy, dragging basslines and much of his success most definitely has been fostered by support from the number of the scene’s veterans. Early in his career his first tracks were signed by Shimon for Audioporn. Not only has Randall been playing out Love’s production in his but he’s also signed a track to his latest Pieces compilation and more of Love’s material has been heard being played out by Doc Scott and DJ Marky, too. With an appearance from the rising star happening in RM2 on 10th November, we contacted him to deliver a FABRICLIVE Promo Mix to represent his sound. For his mix, he submitted an eclectic mix of tough and upfront drum & bass combining classic rollers and fresh jump-up focussed fully on the dancefloor.

Jungle music has taken on many forms over the years, but one consistent hallmark has been its rich dubplate culture. For many of the sound’s leading artists, every record played in a mix or DJ set comes with its own unique story of how it landed there, often because it will never be heard again.

International collective Chopstick Dubplate have shown this throughout their career. While the crew are most obviously affiliated with their Chopstick Dubplate imprint, they’re just as well known for their mixtapes, where they pull together unreleased material from across the spectrum of jungle and ragga music.

On 12th January, we invite founding members Aries, Jacky Murda and Demolition Man to play Room One as part of a drum & bass and jungle heavy bill. To mark the occasion, they sent us over a free download of their new Taqueria Chopstick recording, an hour-long mixtape fully stacked with dubplates from the crew and some of their closest peers.
