I heal myself weekly with the music I play. I listen deeply to the words buried within; the intention behind the lyrics either peppered-in or chorused. So much of the house music I connect with is rooted in love. It’s rooted in desire and hope. It’s rooted in narrative, “Do you want to trip with me?”, “I’ll outstretch my hand”, “I won’t forget about you, you won’t forget about me, we won’t forget about love vibrations!”. I listen to the messages to remind myself what I need and why I continue to move forward.

Vol.2 is represented in two mixing styles; long-melded blends (Trippin’ On Love) and fast, tight radio-style cut mixes with overdubs (Slammin’ With Love). Both convey the deep need for connection to one’s body and to others. It’s this connection energy that I find so powerful about house music’s healing magic.

Octo Octa - Love Hypnosis Vol. 2 Mixtape

With what was mostly a full and fruitful year for us with many beautiful moments, we now turn our eyes forward to what is looking to be a very exciting year for us at Phonica as we walk into our 20th year of being alive. 2022 saw our mix series get even more killer contributions from artists like Paramida, Sally C, Fred P, Eden Burns, Alex Kassian, Erol Alkan and more. 2023's series line up plans to keep moving up and we have opened this years mix season in the capable hands of two of the finest DJ/Producers doing it right now. Bringing nothing but powerful, euphoric and goddess energies it can only be Octo Octa and Eris Drew of T4T Luv NRG. Amazingly celebrated for their strand of psychedelic, rolling progressive, trancey-house and break rhythms we can't think of two better selector's to take on our series. With an excellently curated compilation and mix for our good friends at Fabric last year as well as two banging cassettes on T4T we can't begin to imagine what this year has in-store for Maya and Eris but we have no doubt it's even more on the upward trajectory! Most likely to the heavens and back! We had a chat with Maya and Eris to see what they have been up to lately and little about how they approached the mix.

Phonica Mix Series 103: Octo Octa & Eris Drew

There's an old-school touch to ISAbella's sound. Breakbeats, rolling tech house, progressive house and trance pepper both her studio mixes and her debut EP, transporting listeners to a place of peak '90s indulgence. It's no wonder, then, that vintage rave sounds are a signature tenet of MARICAS, the club night and label that she helped start in 2018.

Her love for the '90s is tangible on her RA Podcast, an emotional journey across breakbeat house, trancey techno and funky electro. First-rate throwbacks such as Canyon's "Move" and "Lightspan Soundwave" by The Shamen exude a carefree euphoria, while heavier cuts like Desert's "Moods (Club Mix)'' intensify the feeling of rapture. Even the contemporary releases, like Bashkka's excellent "C-quence Of Calamities," feel rooted in nostalgia.

MARICAS mixes are usually energetic from the get-go, but ISAbella starts out nice and relaxed this time around. The mix's most striking element is how personal each track feels—a reflection of her intimate relationship with these records. Each one evokes a special poignancy and though these ephemeral selections were largely improvised, ISAbella believes they "show what's going on lately and what's going on forever."

Roza Terenzi is a producer and DJ from Perth, Australia, now based in Melbourne. After a number of years producing under another name she adopted this moniker to reflect her change in direction and focus. The hands of fate (and the record industry) led to a series of records coming out in quick succession on different labels, with her newest release Mwah recently dropping on Colin Volvert's Kalahari Oyster Cult. A few weeks back we caught up with Roza to speak about her record Weakest Link on Voyage Recordings, the Australian label helmed by Berlin-based Andy Hart. The release, emblematic of her sound, doubled up playful scratches and jaunty synth melodies floating over classic electro sounds and ravey breaks. In an entertaining Gmail-based chat, we also discussed this sudden glut of records, her musical beginnings and inspirations and the meaning of the word “doof”.

Since speaking with her at the beginning of May, she's announced a word-wide tour, jetting off the first week of June for a hefty three months. With dates seeing her land in London for Corsica Studios, Amsterdam for De School and Bambi's in Toronto, there are plenty of opportunities to catch the Melbourne-based DJ. Knowing we wanted to get her in for a mix straight after our interview with her went live, she's managed to get one in time before the summer tour kicks off.  Here's what she had to say on her Truancy Volume:

"The mix today is a loose representation of my DJ sets at the moment, a smash together of genres, which I try to make flow. I like to focus on the elements I love from each of them and how they can interact rather than the style, whilst keeping the dynamics pretty energetic and spontaneous. There are a lot of my personal favourite old gems in here but also a forthcoming track of mine coming out on Salt Mines very soon, as well as new Ambien Baby, Escape Artist and Florist - all incredible artists. I wanted to specifically stray away from my previous structures with mixes, so hopefully this direction keeps it somewhat fresh!"

Truancy Volume 214: Roza Terenzi

I recorded this mix in 2018 for the Her Damit festival and titled it the Mystery of the Motherbeat. I was hungry to tour Europe for the first time and agreed to do a mix and play the festival on a shoestring budget. Her Damit went into bankruptcy later that year, failing to pay artists and others for their work.  They also let their Soundcloud account expire, losing all the mixes they commissioned for the series. 

I am re-releasing this mix under its original name. Its real name. It is one of my deepest mixes. It is filled with the love and hope for the future that I put into it. It was recorded a week before I went to visit Maya and Brooke for the first time in March of 2018, exactly two years ago. That visit would change my life.
