Every so often the universe delivers one of those special parties, the ones that stick with you and send shivers down your spine bassline. A few months ago in a brief recess between interstate lockdowns, we had the absolute pleasure of playing the closing set at the Bridge courtyard for our friends at Lovejoy. We woke up at 6am, had a 7/11 coffee and a tequila and headed straight into the rave for a 9am set time(!!!). The pure rapture that ensued thereafter was captured via this recording. We originally weren't going to share it, but as we and our Sydney dance community family are both currently locked down, we thought it would be nice to relive the moment together, from our lounge rooms to yours.

Paramida - 27 November 2021

On Oct 6th 2021, about 2 years after my last set in London, I played from open to close (11pm to 5am) at Village Underground in Shoreditch. Here's a recording of the whole night with a bit of the crowd noise. 

Perhaps a full tracklist at some point... some unreleased stuff in here. 

Even though it had been a while, we had all night so no use in rushing things! I came across a lot of lovely music this year, but it mostly lived in my rekordbox or in a radio mix. I actually record a lot of my sets but it always feels like they're in a constant state of iteration, making it hard to pick just one "version" to release. Over the years I feel like this has led me to only very sparingly drop live-recorded sets. A "party" doesn't often lend itself to the archivable realm, maybe the memories are best suited to the ephemeral. 

Anyway, eternal gratitude crystals to those who came and those who danced, and to those listening now.

Avalon Emerson Live in London (6 hour dj set) Oct 2021

If it's a hefty dose of energy and fun you're in the market for, then there's really no need to look any further than Shanti Celeste.

As a DJ, producer and general human being, she oozes these emotions from her very pores. It's hard to not have a smile on your face when you're watching her play; her sets are chock full of bouncy, vibrant, life-giving house and techno.

The London-based Chilean cut her teeth as a DJ in Bristol, furthering her musical education through working at Idle Hands, and putting her stamp on the city's nightlife scene with Housework; the night that she started (and continues to run) with pals and fellow DJs Daisy Moon, Gramrcy and Golesworthy.

Unsurprisingly the motive of purely having fun remains central to these sporadic soirees, and is a sentiment that extends to her productions too. Shanti steers clear of making music when she's feeling sad or angry, and as a result her productions are full of energy and joy, just like the output of those who've made a home on Peach Discs, the imprint she runs alongside fellow Housework co-founder Gramrcy.

Since launching the pair have put out releases from the likes of Call Super, Ciel, Chekov and Peach, as well as rallying friends and family for their Peach Pals VAs, and it looks as though there's plenty more to keep tabs on this year.

Last summer, at We Out Here festival, we were joined deep in the woods on our Ransom Note stage by Shanti, sandwiched between sets from Al Wootton and Batu. In signature fashion she jacked the fun levels up to 10 and treated us to a set we're not gonna forget in a hurry - lucky for you lovely lot we're sharing that live recording today... Here's that Monday energy you're in need of!

Shanti Celeste: The 'Ransom Note' Mix

Panorama Bar resident and Love On The Rocks label head Paramida joins us for the 92nd edition of the Phonica Mix Series. 

Since moving to Berlin in 2010, Paramida has since become a key figure in the cities ever-expanding electronic music scene. In 2014 she launched her Love On The Rocks label which has seen releases from Massimiliano Pagliara, Telephones, Fantastic Man, Elles, Violet, Alex Kassian and more.  

Having spent five years working at Oye Records, Paramida is certainly no stranger to digging. Each of her varied DJ sets brings a new beacon of pleasure and surprise. Blending proto-house to trance, percussive gems with high-energy techno, Italian dream house and irresistible new beat. Sounds that are very much reflected in this here recording. Phonica Mix Series 92: Paramida

Kyoto-born, Berlin-based DJ, producer and artist, Alex Kassian has become a firm favourite of ours over here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His sophisticated, lush and organic sounding productions have been picked up by labels such as Paramida’s Love On The Rocks and Alex Bradley’s Utopia Records in recent years. His most recent release, Leave Your Life, was released in 2021 via Pinchy & Friends, and we can safely say it was one of our most-played, and bestselling, records of the year.

Together with Hiroaki OBA, Alex is also one-half of Opal Sunn, who have been operating their own imprint Planet Sundae since 2017, through which they self-released a number of EPs, catching the attention of and support from dance music luminaries such as Andrew Weatherall and DJ Sprinkles.

This mix is a live excerpt from one of the last parties we played before covid turned everything upside down. Two hours cut from an 8 hour set at Colour in Melbourne. After all these months, and finally listening back, we felt like it captures the essence of our DJ style quite well and took us back to those fun moments on the dance floor, feeding off the dancers energy. We hope you find some joy in it and we look forward to joining you all on the dance floor when it's safe to do so in 2021 :-)
