Feed Your Head Guest Mix: Attendances

Samhain XX was an experiment in streaming during an incredibly dark and uncertain time. The idea was since we couldn't get together physically, we could get our whole community together on a stream in a totally immersive environment that allowed for things that wouldn’t be possible to happen in the normal material state of events. To make it unique to its medium, and to therefore look beyond boundaries and travel distance and normal event times and all the other things that limit the possibilities in the real world. This allowed us to put together an over 30 hour dream line up with so many inspirations and heroes. Impossible things like having people from all over the world in a single stream, like Wata Igarashi from Japan, or Azu Tiwaline from the Sahara by way of France, or Solar from SF, or Eris Drew from deep in the T4T LUV NRG woods, Danny Daze in Miami or Clark Price in Pittsburgh and so on. So we were more than ecstatic that one of our favorite producers who happens to reside in London agreed to participate: Forest Drive West. His music is stellar and moves in so many directions, it is truly an honor to have his set close our weekly releases / rebroadcasts of the Samhain XX series. We can only hope these experiments will help us mutate to a more interesting future.

San Francisco’s Loveshadow @loveshadowdjs is a dance collective / music project between Anya and Izaak, two bay natives whose underground paths have dotted across the bay, Philadelphia, Chicago and Detroit, eventually landing in Oakland where their origin story finds them crossing paths working together at the former local Perch cafe. A shared love of a track by Aurra heard through the radio at the cafe becomes the catalyst that would eventually lead to their musical world building drawing from emotive sophisto-pop fused with balearic jazz and funk; through Anya’s vocal and songwriting set against the backdrop of Izaak’s productions. This has transpired through countless DJ sets that span across Fault Radio, Seance Center, NTS, Beyond / Below, among others, a release through Portage Garage Sounds with friend Ryan Spencer entitled S Transporter and their new Music For Memory self titled release.

As the year culminates, we are guided by Loveshadow delivering two hours of pure cosmic subterranean energy. Mining otherworldly realms imbued with esoteric atmospheres, they extract on the more offbeat offerings of jazz, post punk, dub, dark wave synth pop, and all the delightful intersectional sonic layers that can be found in between. A listening party that mystifies and opens portals into an unknown tomorrow.

They are the kind of person who's likely to have a meet-cute story with a surprising number of your friends from everywhere in the world (we met over a popsicle in the front row of No Way Back once upon a time). They bring the same spirit of community and giving they bring to the dancefloor to their engagement with the music community, most recently through their label @pprzrecords with DJ Hockey and their Afrofuturism is NOW mix series.

"So for mixes usually, I’ll find a few songs which have a common narrative/story. Then with that narrative in mind, I'll think about what the start and the end of the story sound like and do I have songs which I can use for the start and the end. I’ll usually then split the mix into 2-3 parts (3 parts for a recorded mix, 2 parts for a live performance) and each part will have the same shared theme but different energy levels.

For this one, I had a few electro tracks which weren’t really based on phrases, but were long and evolving, so I could mix them as textures kinda like how I would mix techno. There is a mix of electro/bass/techno throughout, however I purposely tried to avoid songs with 4x4 kick patterns.

In terms of a narrative I envisioned a soundtrack to a science fiction movie, recounting a story of a journey gone wrong, and elements known (science) vs. elements unknown (religion/ritual). It is always interesting to reflect on when a mix was recorded and how it reflects that period of time; for me it reflects a period of Winter, an ongoing pandemic and a bleak view of the future. I wouldn’t be able to record the same mix now because I am in such a different place emotionally and musically compared to a few months ago.

It was honestly so fascinating while writing the interview for this mix series to realize I’d come full circle and I was playing electro again but in a new way, after discovering it years ago and leaving it behind after getting so tired of it."
