There is nothing ordinary about Sepehr (@sepehr-a): he hails from the Bay Area of San Fran, is based in New York City but has Iranian heritage and takes great pleasure in pulling apart everything you think you know about dance music. His maverick approach results in versatile and genre-defiant sounds that collide EBM, drum & bass, techno, electro, acid and plenty more on some of the finest labels out there. He runs his own Shaytoon Records which is focussed on the Middle Eastern underground, and in May lands on our own Dekmanel Records with Genesis Domain, a varied EP full of intriguing sounds.

The same could be said of his mix for us this week. It's a deep dive into his eclectic and eccentric musical mind that spans several sounds and scenes. Although united by body-moving rhythms, there is everything from club to techno to broken beat and plenty more besides. Each track is packed with detail and surrealist sounds that will keep your head as busy as your heels.

SonarMix 044: Mor Elian

This month’s radio show celebrates the Carhartt WIP x Tresor collaboration, highlighting the historic Berlin and Detroit techno axis, also known as 030/313.

For the show, we welcome the Hamburg-based DJ @helena-hauff, who has created a mix documenting the legacy of Tresor, both as a club and record label, and its link to the roots of techno in Detroit.

Pulsing with wild melodies and rapid kicks, the mix was recorded using all vinyl, and features classics from the likes of Drexciya, Joey Beltram, and the late Silent Servant, as well as records from nascent producers such as UFO95. As ever, the mix is accompanied by an interview with Helena Hauff, who gives insights on her relation to the Tresor club and label as well as news on future projects. Ūmboma, is a collaboration between Omar Ahmad (@themusicofomar) and Miss Alicia (@okaymissalicia). Ūmboma is a project that emphasizes African, Arab and Latin American contemporary rhythms. A combination of Arabic, Swahili and Spanish words, Ūmboma signifies a Congregation of Freedom & Dance. Ūmboma do long-form journeys, starting with the experimental and psychedelic, moving into the rhythmic and euphoric. Here they present a studio mix of driving percussive house music in advance of their appearance at The Bunker at Good Room on July 20, 2024.

What does great techno sound like in 2024? Enter LYDO. This week's RA Podcast captures @lydole in full flow, combining the old-school vernacular of European and North American techno—reduced rhythms, hi-hats and punchy 909s—with tracks from the new guard (Sev Dah, GiGi FM, D.Dan) sprinkled throughout.

After moving to New York in 2015, the Vietnamese-American sound artist and X-XTRA.SERVICES founder became one of BASEMENT's first residents; the scene built around the revered Queens club has helped nurture their adventurous sound. Lately they've been making waves beyond North America, playing with the MARICAS crew in Barcelona and locking down slots at De School, Bassiani and Draaimolen.

RA.947 is the sound of artful hypnosis: it's techno with elegance, depth and just the right amount of thump. Rig this up on a proper system, turn off the lights and any worries—about the genre's direction of travel, or otherwise—might melt away.

A short decade ago, Galcher Lustwerk seemed to come full speed out of obscurity with a moment defining mix that landed him and his sound at the centre of everyone’s attention. 100% Galcher was a blend of his unreleased works, borrowing from the alternative Americana of midwestern house and urban focused hip-hop, as well as another of his motherland’s key exports: film. The Cleveland native subsequently pushed that vision and its variants further with releases on Tsuba and the founding of label Lustwerk Music, as well as releases under aliases Road Hog, The Fock, Macchiatto, 420 and Power User; the pandemic didn’t slow him down either, with another batch of releases that spanned both rap and ambient with equal skill. A polyglot when it comes to musical genre: for most there’s a little daylight between hip-hop and electronic music, but for Galcher the two are at the vanguard of new sounds, genres united in a constant push into the unknown and discovery of the new, a key modus in his creative process. If any of this is difficult to envision, think lo-fi melodies and velvet smooth house with his very own voice thrown in, a dreamy patchwork of inspirations that are given form by his limitless innovation and nerd-level turnover of hardware. Bassiani Podcast 224 is a four-hour whopper recorded live at Horoom, the DJ/producer’s usual antics in more danceable format, laid back house and a measure of the ‘noodly’ jazz sounds he’s known for, with the supporting role of a driving bassline.
