RLS released the first of four EP’s in January of 2021 titled “Venom”. The second EP “Falcon” was released in February featuring characteristic bass-heavy tracks and foot-stomping breaks. 

The third and latest EP release ‘Spirit’ progresses the trio’s genre-defying sound with five tracks. The first track ‘Direction’ kicks off with its quintessential boombap sound highlighting Restless Leg Syndrome’s affinity for Hip Hop. The groups’ mastery of the art of scratching is tastefully peppered throughout the EP to complement their arsenal of vinyls. Their wide scope of references provides a level of depth to tracks like “Anamur” bringing together African-inspired drums and oriental strings. 

Restless Leg Syndrome plan to drop the fourth and final EP of the collection in June, leading up to the release of Totem, a 2LP vinyl release featuring all tracks from the four EPs (available for pre-sale).

The single ‘Gönndir’ is studded with polyrhythms and a seductive bassline. With skittering backbeats and funky riffs, the EP is dynamic in its beat switches and laden with North African gems. ‘Embassadors of Rhythm’ features an instructional workshop by the iconic Egyptian percussionist and composer Hossam Ramzy (sampled by Timbaland for Jay-Z’s song ‘Big Pimpin’). Bass-heavy track ‘The Fools’ alludes to the popular Tunisian mizwed music, which uses the traditional ‘mizwad’ bagpipes and the ‘darbouka’ drum. This final EP is immersively inventive and infectiously addictive.

The sense of borderlessness is evident from Gwen Stefani’s iconic “uh huh” in the third track “My Shit” to unearthed Middle Eastern records collected during travels to the region, “Falcon” is laden with references from all corners of the globe. From the bass-heavy title track to “Hayati,” characteristics paying homage to the golden age of Arabic music are interlaced with synths and 808s.
