There is a saying in Iceland. If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes.
We witnessed almost all seasons within this one hour set alongside the owner of Micro Orbit Records, Michele Zanco aka Zenk, our first guest for our “Minimal in Iceland” series. This was filmed by the shore of Skorradalsvatn lake, in the Hvalfjordur region about 1 hour drive outside of the capital Reykjavik. The name of the cabin is Stálpastaðir and it represents the only remnants of a farm which was abandoned in 1951.

Born and raised in Milan, @JohnDirimat is a Sri Lankan-Philippine artist who has developed a unique blend of cultural influences. Growing up in the 1990s, he nurtured a strong passion for street Hip-Hop culture, while also cultivating an interest in underground electronic music. His music is a fusion of minimal-techno grooves, funky vibrations, exotic sentiments, and an esoteric touch.
As a co-founder of "Rebus Collective", John is also part of the O.D.D. (Masada) family in Milan, a community of artists and musicians known for their eclectic and avant-garde style.

For over 20 years, Pedro Goya has been working hard out of his home base in Lisbon. From his early studio collaborations with the late Magazino on labels like Exun, Classic and Music For Freaks (for example the addictive hit 'Freaky Mike' from 2003) through to more recent releases on Yoyaku, ubiyu and his own Troia Recordings and self-titled label, Pedro's music has always been impeccably produced, reflecting his day job as a mixing and mastering engineer. As a DJ he's played as far afield as Japan and New York, while remaining a staple on the Portuguese circuit. His most recent outing, the Bitch Bounce EP, is the 11th record to appear on the Carpet & Snares label.

We spoke to Pedro about his taste and approach as a selector and sound engineer, as well as his relationship to vinyl as a medium over the years. Read the Q&A as you listen to his stellar mix of deep and garagey breaks and house.

In the studio, great friends often yield great results. Such is the case here with Arno & Dana Ruh, who team up for the first time here on Ruh’s much-cherished Brouqade label. Under his Einzelkind alias (now dropped here as he resorts to his actual first name), Arno helms Pressure Traxx, a label that can legitimately claim to be one of minimal techno’s most unconventional and consistent labels. As such, it’s no surprise that these two share a great musical bond.  

We get underway courtesy of the drum-heavy sounds of ‘The Dial Up. As is these guys’ way of doing this, this one is full of unpredictable twists and turns, and from the off it’s immediately apparent that their individual talents bring out the best in one another. Watch out too for the interesting samples, from old-school Internet dial-up sounds (hence the title) to beeping mobile phones. A tech-heavy roller with some swing, it gets us going in quite elaborate fashion.

On the B-side, the pair exercise their penchant for deeper strands quite expertly on ‘Echo Cancellation’. A thrilling cut that magnificently joins the dots between the intricate and the banging, it’s full of captivating rhythms and off-kilter vocal samples, with the latter being a core component of both producers’ recent output. Dexterous and enticing, it’s a track that’s sure to earn repeated plays from discerning deep house heads over the next couple months. 

The action then culminates soon after thanks to ’Teletype’. Again, subtle vocal snippets weave in and out, but it’s their pairing with the track’s dramatic acid gurgles that really drive matters forward. Intricate sounds, impeccably produced: here’s hoping this is not the first and last time we see Arno & Dana join studio forces.
