A unique type of breakthrough act delivers this week's mix.

Marquis Hawkes debuted in 2012, releasing a trio of EPs on Glasgow's Dixon Avenue Basement Jams label. Drawing from classic Chicago house, with a no frills approach to production that made him the perfect fit for the label (whose motto is "real rockin' raw shit from the street for the clubs"), the EPs made him an instant one-to-watch in house and techno. 2014 was Hawkes' most productive year yet: as well as another record on Dixon Avenue, he delivered records for European labels that fit his approach (Clone Jack for Daze, Creme Organisation) and inked a deal with Houndstooth, who released his Fifty Fathoms Deep EP.

Hawkes is no kid, however (if you didn't gather that from the illustration above): a British ex pat in Berlin, he was making music for 15 years before finding success as Marqius, and his FACT mix draws from two decades of buying and making dance records. DBX, Kerri Chandler, Armando and Roy Davis Jr are all included, while there's also an airing for newer, but still classic-sounding house from Leon Vynehall and Delroy Edwards.

Enlisted by Eats Everything for the 10th Edible Podible is the Parisien DJ/producer and long-term Robsoul Recordings collaborator Joss Moog.
Since releasing his first EP 'Room 25’ with Robsoul Recordings, Joss has been standing up on the house music scene and boasts a rich discography, including releases and remixes on labels such as Minority, Magnetic, Maracuja, Syncrophone and Kinjo.
His solid entry to the Edible Podible mix series, follows on from Edible favourites Jasper James, Luca Pilato, Acid Mondays and Muallem. Moog’s mix which flows from Funk to Tech House and everything in between is available to download now for free!

It's hard to emphasise just how integral Steve Bicknell's party (run alongside partner Sheree Rashit) LOST is to the story of techno here in the UK. They were the first to bring over pioneering talent from across the Atlantic with artists like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Basic Channel and Robert Hood all making their debut UK performances at LOST. Evidently, but not unsurprisingly, the party inspired the generation that came after them with LOST cited time and time again as a foundational experience and influence. 

Creating bespoke spaces, which were often hand built by Bicknell, with the team’s stripped back approach they delivered with the power of their soundsystem and housed ground breaking performances the like of which had never been seen before. The label Bicknell helms, Cosmic Records, is just as lovingly understated in its presentation and delivery. With a clear focus on quality of form rather than hype their output is as typically hypnotic and as engrossing as everything that was done under the LOST banner. It’s also the main vessel for Bicknell’s own productions. 

Here he’s recorded a brand new promo mix ahead of his return to Room Two in just over a week’s time (20th June). It was intended to be a snapshot of where he’s at musically right now, but – after listening to it - we’d prefer to call it a demonstration of the man’s magnetic and compelling approach to DJing.

Yes it’s that time of year again, with dance music aficionados from around the globe ready to party it up in Barcelona for Sonar, but what about those of us who can’t make the trip? Well fear not, Camea & Kiki have the answer as they provide this weeks DT podcast!

Mixed ahead of their much anticipated back to back performance for Ellen Allien’s Bpitch Control showcase in the open air setting of La Terrrazza, they’ll take to the decks alongside scene luminaries DJ Qu, Ejeca and Ellen herself for what appears well set to be an evening to remember on the 18th of June.

Exploring a wide range of the best cuts house and techno have to offer, the mix sees the pairing journey through a variety of upbeat numbers numbers that have had us thawing out those boogying muscles as we dance around the office. We can’t imagine a better way to start the week, although we’ll admit their selections have already got us looking at booking last minute flights to Spain…

I loved this gig so much, even though it was over before I knew it. Playing to an 8000 crowd required a slightly heavier hand in choosing tracks than normally but it was a rock n roll experience that reminded me once again what all those 1000s of hours of learning, practicing, despairing, hoping, struggling were good for - to get the opportunity to connect people with each other and feel the love. It's good, important work.
