In the most literal sense, The Late Show returns to Revolver Upstairs. After two years of hitting refresh on blank calendars, dancing to loud music in dark places looks set to return in 2022. At this point, a standard-issue press kit will say “so and so is excited to announce”, but in this instance, maybe a sense of relief is more appropriate. Relief at the possibility of resuming what The Late Show has been doing for the last 22 years; that is, blasting alien sounds of the underground through bassbins and tweeters.
 
But what even is the sound of Revolver’s Saturday nights? Ask any of the night’s residents and their painfully evasive answers will suggest that they themselves don’t even fully know. The best response would be to simply call it something unknown. Now that even your mate’s dad, (who wears a David & Nicky & Larry & Frankie Tshirt and plays Boileroom rips in his Tesla) is an absolute expert on dance music, knowing has become…. Well, kinda boring. Maybe the whole point of going into dark rooms to dance amongst strangers to records that are financially ruinous to their makers is to engage with something that is unknown.  
 
Enter Revolver Upstairs Records’ next release, Known Unknowns, a 15-track compilation from residents, friends, and family. It’s a compilation that encapsulates the disparate sounds you’ll hear at The Late Show, between dimming the restaurant lights and exiting with only one shoe the following day. Fragments of breakbeats skip across stretched rave chords, anaemic basslines hover over metallic loops, and glassy synths encase crunchy electronics. It’s a collection of music which claims to know only one thing, that we’re glad to be back.

The Late Show: Known Unknowns

This is Mike's first new music since the lockdowns ended. These songs were written after his pandemic themed double LP 'Indoor Life'. That record was introverted, and this one is extroverted. It is an awakening almost. The songs on this EP sample voices of extinct indigenous cultures. 'Secondary Emotions' uses the words and voices of The Palicour Indians of the Arucua River in Brazil. 'Flee' was originally slated to be used in the Flee Project series of releases, but did not materialize. The owners of Flee Project were kind enough to give Mike permission to release the track nonetheless. Flee uses elements from Tarantismo - a tribute to Pizzica, antique Italian music used to heal people suffering from a mysterious disease.

Mike Simonetti - Secondary Emotions

Creative collaborations can be as varied as the artists and art forms involved. Seldom though do we hear of a tale involving a long lost recording and a sweet little secret. The story goes something like this…

At the beginning of the millennium, Spacey Space was busy DJing and playing live sets around Naarm / Melbourne, some of which were recorded to DAT and backed up to various hard drives.

Fast forward twenty years and the pandemic provided the perfect catalyst to dig through these ancient drives uncovering a recording called ‘Sloppy Live Track’. Old mate T-Rek never met a wonky banger he didn’t like and thus Spacey sent it to him for a laugh and promptly forgot about it.

With the light of divine inspiration shining brightly, T-Rek secretly took it upon himself to reimagine the track as giant melodic robo-funk feast, and DON’T STOP! along with its insistent capitalisation and punctuation was born. 

Complete with remixes from DJ Ransom and Funboys, the first-time collaboration from Spacey Space & T-Rek hits the streets via the esteemed Revolver Upstairs Records, loving home to both artists since before anyone can really remember.

Spacey Space & T-Rek - DON'T STOP!

Free-floating jack-trax, bleepy drum workouts, machine funk, and cavernous electro… Revolver Upstairs Records returns with a release to celebrate 25 years of its infamous Saturday night, The Late Show. Unlike previous releases, this one takes a slightly different approach, focussing squarely on Revolver’s back bar and its reputation for groove-driven eclecticism.

Sparking things off is Ransom and Tonelab under the moniker, Cable 54 with their track, Bush Cow Milk. Think crunched-up drum samples, one-finger bleep lines and pulsing analogue bass and you'll be somewhere in the ballpark. Why are they trying to sell me Ponzi shares in their unpasteurised dairy subscription service? As any Late Show resident from the cage knows, versatility is the key to survival in this game.

Second up is Tony 2000 with Tec-Star; a hazy jack track of stuttered vocal chops, cassette-quality strings and SH101 bass tabs. Word is that during a physical altercation with the club’s cigarette machine one morning at 3:42 am Tony was electrocuted, catapulting him into the far far future, which as it turns out is a lot like Chicago’s south side in 1984. The morning after he found this one on tape in the toe of his left shoe.

Next is Lewis CanCut under the moniker DJ Snow Fleas with It’s Magic (this time a Ron Hardy reference for real). Budget boogie keys hover over chorused-out Juno licks, which would actually sound quite nice if the whole thing wasn’t drowning under the weight of an analogue drum machine mangled through a guitar pedal. We’re just happy he’s finally given up on his dream of starting an Arthur Russell cover act (Victoria’s RSLs and country clubs are doing it tough enough already).

Closing out the release is Paz with Rock Wilder, a cavernous electro jam from the rough streets of Melbourne’s inner South-East. Pipe bass bangs over stuttered beats, squeaking like trainers on newly polished basketball courts. 4th quarter, game on. One time I could have sworn I saw Arthur Baker walking a labradoodle-cross up the West side of Chapel St. Anyway, it’s 6 am here on the corner of Chapel and High, and everything is starting to make sense.
