Mincy x Killjoy - Always Sunny In Dullo (OUT NOW ON EXTRA SPICY)

In the most literal sense, The Late Show returns to Revolver Upstairs. After two years of hitting refresh on blank calendars, dancing to loud music in dark places looks set to return in 2022. At this point, a standard-issue press kit will say “so and so is excited to announce”, but in this instance, maybe a sense of relief is more appropriate. Relief at the possibility of resuming what The Late Show has been doing for the last 22 years; that is, blasting alien sounds of the underground through bassbins and tweeters.
 
But what even is the sound of Revolver’s Saturday nights? Ask any of the night’s residents and their painfully evasive answers will suggest that they themselves don’t even fully know. The best response would be to simply call it something unknown. Now that even your mate’s dad, (who wears a David & Nicky & Larry & Frankie Tshirt and plays Boileroom rips in his Tesla) is an absolute expert on dance music, knowing has become…. Well, kinda boring. Maybe the whole point of going into dark rooms to dance amongst strangers to records that are financially ruinous to their makers is to engage with something that is unknown.  
 
Enter Revolver Upstairs Records’ next release, Known Unknowns, a 15-track compilation from residents, friends, and family. It’s a compilation that encapsulates the disparate sounds you’ll hear at The Late Show, between dimming the restaurant lights and exiting with only one shoe the following day. Fragments of breakbeats skip across stretched rave chords, anaemic basslines hover over metallic loops, and glassy synths encase crunchy electronics. It’s a collection of music which claims to know only one thing, that we’re glad to be back.

There are many great duos that the contemporary world has been presented with. Think Beyonce and Jay Z, Bert and Ernie, Daft Punk, Sweet Female Attitude and Sunship, just to name a few. Today, Gallery Records are presenting another, powerhouse, bass and club driven duo, AK SPORTS and Mincy, two local underground legends and community leaders, combining for ‘Rave Again’ an EP to challenge any soundsystem. The duo each present an original and a corresponding remix, resulting in four percussive and bass driven numbers. 
 
Hosting the A-side is Eora/Sydney born and bred, London and LA based, Balamii radio host, DJ, producer and high energy aficionado AK SPORTS. She delivers the chonky, ‘Flex’, ready to slide directly into her globally renowned DJ sets that feature hard hitting breaks, nostalgic warehouse cuts and the darker tinges of UK inspired garage. ‘Flex’ nods to the traditional tropes of these genres glued together by a tongue-in-cheek donk bassline which sits delicately below euphoric synths and a choppy, sporadic vocal sample. It’s alternative version sees Mincy transform the track's ebb and flow to a consistent, in your face four to the floor romper, representing it as a techno-esque sweat dripping affair. 
 
Just as remix’s outro provides a breath of fresh air for the listener, slams Mincy’s original, ‘Biscuit Inception’ a manifestation of her vast experience as a dance music community member. It includes being label executive of Extra Spicy, she’s shared the stage with the likes of DJ EZ, Flava D, Preditah, Conductah. Rarely does instrumental music require a parental guidance logo, but ‘Biscuit Inception’s’ booming bass line, eerie vocal sample and 90s inspired breaks are not for the faint hearted. If late night warehouse parties have taught us anything, it's that there's always room for more euphoria and AK SPORTS’ FJAAK-esque remix exemplifies this perfectly. Time travel is technically impossible, but the remix’s glitzy piano chords, shaky distorted percussion and an impressive omnipresent kick will vividly teleport the listener back to the 90s. 
 
While the collaborative EP makes sense sonically the duo’s intrinsic connection to community action makes the record even sweeter. Both artists are vast community leaders and advocates of a new era of dance music, one deservedly reclaimed by female identifying artists and communities. Their unapologetic nature in uplifting, representing and solidifying their respective communities are well on show here, packaged as four tracks ready to take over and demand attention in any club environment.

Following 4 years in operation as an online-community and monthly Threads Radio show, the All Colours crew are evolving into a record label and party. Having kicked things off with a jam-packed launch event at South East London’s Fox & Firkin venue this February, the crew are now prepped to unveil the All Colours Music arm of the project with a 10-track VA release of uk garage, breaks, 140/bassweight and jungle from a stellar lineup of established artists and newcomers alike.

Featuring tracks from the likes of Club Glow’s LMajor, Bristol dubstep stalwart Sepia, DJ Mag Best Breakthrough Producer award-winner Samurai Breaks and Sydney bass-music aficionado Mincy to name a few, this debut VA acts as mission statement for All Colours open-minded music policy and sets the tone for what the collective has in store for the future. Purveyor of lovecore, fabba and cakebeat, bestie and all-round DJ-inspo Angel D’lite blesses Ritual Poison with her ‘Re4mat’ EP. 

‘Werk My Body’ is a swirl of feminine energy, empowered vocals blending with hardcore breaks and hyper bass, a four four switch warping temporally before the track drops again. Local Group return the remix favour from their own recent EP, slowing ’Werk My Body’ to a 140 emo-banger, trance melodies sandwiching a proggy mid-section, the bass bumping throughout. ‘R u Ready’ keeps the NRG and BPMs high, breakbeats rolling over booming sub and dubbed out rave stabs, the sexual charge of the female ragga vocal frank and unashamed. ‘Re4mat’ signs off, the hallowed B2.
