Emerging talent, @manami-b delivers a punchy summer club mix for number 16 in the Junction 2 series.

Bursting on the scene just a few years ago, Tokyo-born Manami has been making serious waves across the UK with standout sets at Motion Bristol,  XOYO and The Warehouse Project. Her first single ‘Plastic Italo’, released in late 2020, was selected by Jaguar as her Dancefloor Moment on BBC Introducing and she has followed up with top releases on Alfresco Disco and Soothsayer. With Bicep, HAAi, and Joy Orbison making up just a few of Manami’s ever growing roster of support artists, she is definitely one to catch at the Junction 2 Inner-City showcase at Tobacco Dock this August bank holiday weekend.

I like to think of this mix as a sonic journey that is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of music. There are moments of horizontal movement, however generally the power, energy and details in the mix are in a state of flux, guided by a subtle rise in BPM and overall power. I tried to make this mix blend the depths of the deep underground with the magnetic allure of the mainstream. Sifting through some stripped back house and delving through both deep and playful strains of Romanian minimal. 

Things start with a bit more of a house nature, however Romanian minimal is the focal point of this musical voyage. For people this sound is news to, it is like minimal techno delicately crafted with soft, velvety hands. It presents a paradoxical simplicity that holds hidden layers of complexity, inviting listeners to explore new realms of consciousness. Subtle and ethereal, the music is adorned with delicate effects that gracefully dance over raw, organic and electronic drums and minimalist basslines. It's an experience that transcends the mere act of listening, allowing you to delve into the depths of introspection. Within this sonic tapestry, you'll discover the mesmerizing works of esteemed artists like Dragutesku, Traumer, Silat Beksi, and Crihan. 

As the mix unfolds, there are a couple notable Romanian pop edits by “Unknown Artist” (Dragutesku) on the DRG series label, which effortlessly merge the realms of the underground and the mainstream. These edits somewhat serve as a sonic bridge, creating a seamless flow that tickles your sense of nostalgia. They intertwine nicely with the mix, creating an energy that amplifies the impact of the moments around them.
