Cataclysmic times, it’s often said, produces great art. So does diversity. The modern day musical landscape is in a constant state of change with its many scenes recreating themselves into something interestingly new. This equally applies to the shoegaze genre. Beautiful Noise is still being made and it’s sounding from all four corners of the globe.

2014 was a great year for shoegaze fans, with news surrounding the reformation of bands like Slowdive, Swervedriver, Ride and Medicine. 2015 is primed to be just as interesting and we are kicking it off by presenting the new breed, who are writing the next chapter in shoegaze. In the wake of the reformation of these ‘first wave’ shoegaze bands, we have amalgamated underground artists from all over the world, who are virtually united under one revolutionary flag
– that of a shoegaze revival.

"Revolution - The Shoegaze Revival" is an epic, truly international 30-track compilation comprised of outstanding original material. Such bands have set the stage for shoegaze pioneers’ return to today’s scene by upholding their wall of sound and painting it with breathtaking colour. Some of these bands are also ‘first wave’ but have remained underground, while some are newbies – the ‘second wave’ of shoegaze.

Curated by UK label Raphalite Records and Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif, this compilation features 30 bands from 16 countries, covering 5 of the 6 inhabited continents. Each was selected purely on the basis of their dynamic sound, without any consideration of geographic preference, label affiliation, popularity ranking or hype. Without even one throwaway or filler track, these are all 'keepers'.

This is not a shoegaze tribute album to MBV or Slowdive, or even The Beatles. There is simply so much greatness to the new wave of shoegaze that we’re focusing on original tracks, which showcase the immense talent of the featured bands. For some, this album may be the best shoegaze soundtrack they’ll encounter in 2015. At minimum, this will serve as a fantastic introduction to these new sounds and happily tide existing shoegaze fans over for quite some time.

Creation Records co-founder Joe Foster (also noted for producing My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream, and Jesus & Mary Chain) is also throwing his support behing this initiative, stating "This is a new comp with the best of the world shoegaze/magical psychpoppy's REBIRTH.... Why do I refer to rebirth instead of revival? In contrast, a *rebirth* in the same period gave us such bands as The Cramps, Primal Scream and Cocteau Twins - what a range!! And such a huge and wide world of music...this is exactly what is happening again in a new and unexpected way! 30 bands from 16 countries worldwide...an unprecedented spread of hope and art".

Members of Swervedriver, Slowdive, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Swallow [4AD], Strata Florida [Saint Marie Records] and The Telescopes [Creation Records] have also expressed their support, as well as renowned British producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid). We are hopeful that this compilation will help move this genre beyond being “The Scene That Celebrates Itself” to one that is also celebrated by others...

Emerald & Doreen Recordings once again delve into Eastern Europe with Ummagma, a Canadian-Ukrainian dream pop duo, who got their start in Moscow and have made enough waves there for a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia. Ummagma combines their love of indie rock, synthpop and electronica to create “dreamgaze” power pop. In these two tracks, stunning hypnotic vocals and lush blissed-out resonance create a sonic launching pad to the galaxy or the universe within while getting your groove on. In "Rotation", this occurs on waves of bombastic synths, and in “Live and Let Die”, epic guitar riffs lace with magnetic drumbeats to stage an astonishing dreampop fest. With a jubilant Stereolab and Curve-type feel, these addictive tracks lovingly embed themselves in your brain. Tripped out, Ummagma brings a soundtrack of reverie for both trailblazers and stargazers. This single is a teaser for several Ummagma releases on Emerald & Doreen forthcoming in early 2014.

Since exploding onto the underground music scene in 2012 with 2 independently released full-length LPs – “Antigravity” and self-titled “Ummagma” – the duo has been blazing a colourful, yet eclectic, path forward. Ummagma are a rare commodity in today's music scene: deliciously diverse, dreamy, and loaded with positivity.

Since then, Ummagma has garnered over 350 unique articles, with rave reviews from The VPME, Echoes and Dust, AltSounds, Sounds Better With Reverb, Rolling Stone, The Sound of Confusion, and WaveMaker Magazine, among others. New Born, the debut album from Moscow’s Sounds of Sputnik, is a kaleidoscope of reverb-soaked guitar, calculated drums, thick bass, and angular guitars intertwined with ethereal vocals. This is extraordinary noise-pop, with layered harmonies, interlacing synth and distorted guitars. Sounds of Sputnik paired up with Canadian-Ukrainian duo Ummagma to co-write, produce, and record this album, to be released on UK label Ear to Ear Records. Ummagma’s Shauna McLarnon and Alexx Kretov both contribute mesmerizing vocals.

This project leans heavily on a shared love of melodic dream pop, post-rock and shoegaze with each member bringing their own influences: aspects of Lush, Curve, My Bloody Valentine and No Joy cleverly blend with Hammock, Jesus & Mary Chain and The Twilight Sad to create remarkable “dream noise”.

Rewind about 12 years ago. Roman, Shauna and Alexx were collaborating a bit until Shauna and Alexx left Russia. After losing contact for an entire decade, the three finally reunited last year and quickly beginning to work on new material.

New Born features drummer Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/ Brian Jonestown Massacre) on ‘Overdrive’, and remixes by Malcolm Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), psych rock producer Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn), Russian producers Morozov and Oleg Mezherovsky, and Brazil’s Mind Movies. British producer Marc Joy (Mike Peters, Golden Fable, Primal Scream, Bernard Butler) provided mastering support.

Both bands have been steadily developing a strong international following, partly due to their impeccable ability to blend genres. "In an orbit of their own, they are gathering followers like stardust" (Nerdy Frames).

About Sounds of Sputnik:
Moscow-based Sounds of Sputnik is Roma Kalitkin, whose signature sound mixes post-rock, shoegaze and dream pop with a slight kickback to noise pop. Originally from Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia, he draws inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, and Slowdive. Dubbing himself a "white crow", the music he makes has always gone against trends within Russia, both now as a solo artist and for the 20-odd years he played in various post-punk and shoegaze bands prior to that.

About Ummagma:
Ummagma began in Moscow in 2003, but finally released two LPs (Ummagma & Antigravity) in 2012. They recently released the single Rotation and Lama LP on Emerald & Doreen Recordings. Ummagma has had a full-page feature in Rolling Stone Russia, has won Alternative Eurovision competitions for 2 years in a row (Amazing Radio & Pure 107.8 FM), and received 2 awards at the 2013 Australian Independent Music Video Awards. Ummagma also caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins) and Malcolm Holmes (OMD), who have remixed tracks for fall 2014 release.

Ear to Ear Records was founded in the UK in 2013. Specializing in dream pop, shoegaze, and indie rock, the label originally began with local bands from Wales, such as Lights That Change and Indigo Sky. It soon grew to also include several bands from Europe/ North America, such as Ummagma and Sounds of Sputnik. This month, Ear to Ear also released a mini-EP by Lights That Change.

Their live set at Manchester's Cosmosis Festival, headlined by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Raveonettes and WIRE, kick-started a 44 date tour touching UK, France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, during which the quartet shared the stage with The Telescopes, Ringo Deathstarr and Gonjasufi.
Last March Rev Rev Rev hit the studio once more with Sergio Pomante (Ulan Bator, Lay Llamas) on drums.
The new album, produced by James Aparicio (Spiritualized, Mogwai, Cult Of Dom Keller, Dead Vibrations), is due for release next autumn.
