The halls of the grand hotel were eerily quiet at night and the dim lights flickered softly. The nervous inn was not a place frequented by most, thankfully many would never find themselves in a place like this for they were of sounder mind. The tension between each room could be cut with a knife and there was little conversation between residents.

Nowadays, the word movement is overused to describe many static, 2-dimensional uncreative projects, but thank the musical universe for the ambitious and refreshing INI Movement. The coming together of two soulful places: a studio in Haarlem and an Amsterdam-based record label, have made it possible for the likes of Henry Wu, K15, Jarreau Vandal, Umoja, Sofa Talk, SoulParlour, Ugly Drums and more, to experiment with their skill sets and explore their genius.

A group of passionate musicians connecting in a recording studio is often rewarding and what has resulted on this occasion, is the creation of the magnetic Birdhouse Vol 1 soundtrack. The independent music platform invited a varied group of artists along, to make use of the special ‘Birdhouse’ studio in Haarlem... which makes for a compelling start right? Several members of brass band Gallowstreet, Rilan & The Bombardiers, Umoja & Pitch Controller Mitch, Freshy Jazz and members of The Mauskovic Dance Band, came together to craft Birdhouse Vol 1, in a musical nest where imagination and reality are blended to create masterpieces outside the complex mind of the musician.

The record features the premier track "My Dove," it's technically inventive, compiled of layers of emotionally charged collaborative intelligence. Drifting vocals combined with delicate yet powerful Latin-inspired percussion (listen to ‘Berimbao’ and ‘Late Inflate’ for your Latino fix), perfectly placed horns and the sprinkling of twinkling notes, fill each bar with feeling. You can hear each contributor equally in this track, multiple souls, visions and perspectives, tapped into in each segment.

Brief chaotic periods of crackling news broadcasts samples, slow alluring keys and soft drums play with your affections. Sadness, confusion, joy, hope, liberation, it is a poignant and wistful 3 minutes and 40 seconds. You might think you’ve heard something like it before but I would advise you not to try and dissect the genres which make up the track but instead, invite you to embrace the masterful original yet familiar fusion. My Dove is a new classic that you will enjoy several joints to, a romantic heartache that you can’t leave alone. I wonder if they knew what they were really creating? This track is important because it helps us to define what it really means to honestly and unashamedly, collaborate.

After much anticipation, our Belgian disco diamonds Rheinzand present their debut full-length album. On their self-titled record, The Belgian trio wraps the human heart in synthetic threads of modular electronic disco. 9 songs writhing on timeless dancefloors, morphing in and out of shapes of luxuriant melody and vivid instrumentation.

The album is full of classic disco and electro sounds, wielded with imposing prowess by multi- instrumentalist Reinhard Vanbergen. It’s both an exploration of dance music’s electronic genealogy and the vintage cool that has defined its different eras. Still, an organic atmosphere pervades as the blend of real instrumentation fixes a sort of retro-futurism, imagining an alternative timeline that’s a bit more exciting, more sensuous and libidinal, maybe more human, too, than our current outlook.

We start the engines with Break of Dawn, a compelling beat rises from the basement and soon we’re submerged by the pulsing bassline. Dark sunglasses on, we cruise through the night, letting flashing city lights flow into unbroken torrents of color. Blind awakens us, a splash of handclaps in the face, vivid strings and Charlotte’s trademark slick vocals enter the stage. Tantalizing sunbeams power up circuits of electronic synths blipping and beeping away.

Later down the road, we hit the Latin part of town. Porque fits enchanting vocal spells in beautiful Spanish on playful flamenco rhythms. Fourteen Again is a throwback to early electro, playing around with knobs and buttons. An oscillating synth imagines new worlds of plastic

emotion. Still disco and still very cool, though. A constant velocity is sustained throughout the album by this recurring locomotive synth, trudging away beneath the action. Once in a while, we hear the deep, mighty, trembling voice of Mr. Rheinzand speaking to us in incantations. Someone’s pulling the strings here.

On Slippery People, the trio cover the Talking Heads classic in a characteristic procedure of bouncy funk. We’re swirled around by the delirious glasswork of You Don’t Know Me into the hypnagogic funk noir of Strange World. Drifting through the house of mirrors after the fourth mojito.

Obey collects all these threads in a full-bodied future classic disco anthem, before Queen of The Dawn wraps up the show with a sky-bound epic of operatic choirs and ceremonious drums that lands somewhere between Kate Bush’s Aerial and Peter Gabriel’s most bombastic.

Slippery People

Rheinzand is a collaborative project between Reinhard Vanbergen, the multi-instrumentalist producer, Charlotte Caluwaerts (Tundra) and Mo Disko from the renowned duo ‘The Glimmers.’ Live on stage they are accompanied by Stéphane Misseghers (dEUS) on drums and Bruno Coussée (MannGold) on bass.

Rheinzand’s music is a mixture of styles inspired by dance music’s rich history. Their songs give nods to old & new genres, forgotten & popular scenes in order to create their own take on today’s musical landscape.

Their exotic & eclectic style caught the ears of Danish label ‘Music For Dreams’ on which they released their debut self titled album in March 2020. Piccadilly Records (Manchester) voted the album number 1 album of the year 2020 and Phonica (London) gave them a well-deserved place in their top 50 of best albums of 2020. 

 Tracks from the album such as ‘Blind’ were championed by DJ Harvey during his summer residency at Pikes Ibiza, and the band have had tracks on the first two volumes of his Mercury Rising compilations.

The singles ‘Kills & Kisses’, ‘Obey’ & ‘Slippery People’ (their fantastic cover of Talking Heads’ classic) has further demonstrated their unique and flawless production that is capturing the hearts and dance-floors around the world.
As the live music industry held its breath for a year due to covid, the band didn’t get the chance to bring the first album to a club or festival near you. 

Nevertheless, they used that time well and wrote a second album, titled ‘Atlantis Atlantis’. Still using the same ingredients, you can hear an evolution in song writing, the use of different languages and more song-based structures. The release is planned for early 2022.

To keep momentum during the pandemic, the band and label Music For Dreams commissioned a string of remixes from their debut album from the likes of Gerd Janson, Red Axes, Musumeci, Pete Herbert, Peaking Lights, Superpitcher + many more. Released on digital & Ltd Edition 12”

Hailing from Gent, Belgium the band are set to tour upon the release of their second album 'Atlantis Atlantis' planned for the 4th of February 2022.
