I'm so honored and happy to announce this week's mix from an icon of dance culture, a father of Balearic beat, a previous resident at Ibiza's Amnesia, and an ever-unpredictable DJ and producer who never fails to impress, the legendary DJ Alfredo (Ibiza).

Alfredo Fiorito, the Argentinian-born artist, who emigrated to Ibiza in 1976, helped to grow the popularity of dance music on the island. He also inspired the Balearic beat movement and influential club nights such as Shoom, after Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker caught a set of his at Amnesia in 1987 and returned to the UK feeling energized to recreate the experience at home.

His deeply eclectic sets call on all forms of disco, dub und afro, pop, soul and jazz, classical and contemporary house, and, of course, plenty of obscure Balearic gems, old and new, and everything in-between.  The brilliance of his record digging and famously steamy selections encompass the true essence of hedonism and inclusivity of Ibiza. 

The club scene on Ibiza, and the dance music industry in general, owe him a great deal of gratitude.

The Sunset Lovers #42 with DJ Alfredo

The idea for this mix came up a few months ago when one of my friends posted a Youtube link of Banderas "This Is Your Life" on Facebook. This song got a special place in my heart ever since I heard it for the first time in 1991. It was about time to do something with it, put it in a mix for example. Not sure how I wanted this to fit in but it had to be done, one way or the other. When I drove home from work later that day 'Crazy' from Seal was played on the radio -while that song hardly get any airplay anymore nowadays- and at that moment I realised there where quite some songs in the early 90's that a similar vibe: Mid tempo electronic music with pop/soul/funk and house influences caracterised by excellent songwriting and/or production. Slighty on the deeper/smoother side with -most important of all- a lot of emotion. 

It took me over a month to complete the track selection. Digging deep (ha!) into my collection to find the right versions and to be sure I didn't forget a personal favourite. Most of the selected tracks where used but unfortunately I also had to leave some tracks out because they simply did not fit in the mix on the spot where I wanted them to be. Futhermore I wanted the mix to be 2,5 to 3 hours max. Family stand "Ghetto Heaven", Enigma "Sadeness", Inner City "Watcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'", Driza Bone "Real Love" and Fidelfatti feat. Shirley - "Listen to my music" are among those that didn't make it. 
Most of the songs belong to my all time favourites and so many memories come back to me when I listen to the mix; Holidays in France, Summer Love, School, The Pirate radio stations we ran, Maxximum (yeah that one!) are a few random things that come to mind right now.

The night I started working on the mix I didn't know what challenge there was yet to come. It turned out to be an arduous task as a lot of the tracks where all but DJ-Mix friendly which forced me to create 'mixable' re-edits first. In some cases I was able pick a small drum/instrumental part of the song in question to create an intro and outro, in other cases I had to use multiple versions of a track to make one decent mixable version. It took me over two weeks to complete the mix (Sorry honey for being upstairs all the time! Love you!). Never spend that much time on a DJ mix before -not counting the Awesome Bootleg Mix as that is a megamix- and I am very pleased with the result now that it is finished. I hope you will enjoy it as much I do.

フランス、パリ在住のアーティストMax Fader、またの名をS3A(Sampling As An Artの略)と呼ぶ。一見奇妙に見えるこの名前は、Max本人がアナログ機材やサンプラーで遊び始めた約15年前からスタートし、様々なエレクトロニックミュージックを独自に取り込んだことも起因している。MCDEやTrus’meのようなアーティストに多大な影響を受け、自身も自然とサンプリングを楽曲に取り込むようになっていき、それが徐々に独自のカラーとしてのプロセスにもなった。バイナル愛好家に特に支持があるLazare Hoche、Concrete Music、Local Talk、PhonogrammeそしてFacesなどから精力的にリリースを重ね、2014年にフランスのHold YouthからリリースしたBASTIEN EPがMoodymannによりヘビープレイされ爆発的にヒット。そして同胞フランスの伝説的存在Laurent GarnierのMusic Largeのリミックスを担当し、瞬く間に世界中のアンダーグラウンドシーンに彼の名前が知れ渡った。2015年からは自身のレーベル’’S3A’’を始動させるとともに、Dimensions FestivalやWeather Festivalなどの国内外のフェスティバルにも出演。そして現在パリで最もホットと呼ばれるヴェニュー’’Concrete’’でのレジデントも4年目を迎えた。数年前にはもはや死んだとされるパリのダンスミュージックシーンの中でも近年特に頭角を見せているS3Aのさらなる飛躍が待たれる。

・このミックスはどちらで収録したものですか？

このMixはフランスのトゥール(パリの南西部に位置する街)で開催された「Parc Sainte Redegonde」という広大な野外イベント会場でのDJ中に録音したものだよ。このパーティーは「Les îlots electroniques」と呼ばれていて、地元ではとても有名で、僕も2度参加したことがあるけど、素晴らしいメンバーと最高のお客さんに恵まれているんだ！


・このミックスに使用した機材を教えて下さい。

僕のDJセットをライブで録音したから、Technics Sl1210とPionnerのCDJ 2000、そしてAllen&HeathのXone 92を使ったことになるね。


・このミックスのコンセプトを教えて下さい。

パーティーの雰囲気を見るために、自分がプレイする前から会場に入るのが好きなんだ。音楽を聴いたり、前のアーティストのパフォーマンスを見たりしてね。セットの初めは前のアーティストの構成に影響を受けているし、このセットに関して言えば、映画「エクス・マキナ」の美しいアンビエントなサウンドトラックにSoulphictionの曲を掛け合わせてスタートしたね。


・最近の活動を教えてください。

素晴らしい質問だね！たった今日本のレーベル「soundofspeed」へリリース予定の楽曲を作り終えたところだよ。僕にとって日本で最初のリリースになるし、過去に素晴らしいアーティストが参加しているから、本当に素晴らしい気分だよ。
それから、じぶんのレーベル「Sampling As An Art」でも5枚目のEPをリリースするよ。
自分の楽曲でできたEPで、中でも正に自分らしい2曲、特にB面は特別な楽曲を収録している。みんなが気に入ってくれるといいな！おそらく12月か来年の1月にリリースされるはずさ。

Once again mega happy to have another musical heavyweight selector, friend and fellow north easterner get involved with the podcasts. None other than Newcastle's Stu Hedley. We met around 2003/4 via the NorthEastClubLife chat board (which was essentially one big group of mates from the entire region chatting shit and putting on nights)and through the much loved club-night Habit which we both helped out with music and design. Rubbing shoulders with some of the best DJs in the world, occasionally doing together and enjoying various, daft nights out around the city. Great times indeed.
