Persona unveils the murderer’s row that is the Mello roster of 2015. Oddisee, Apollo Brown, yU, L'Orange, Red Pill, Open Mike Eagle, Rapper Big Pooh, Quelle Chris. The stars of the present teamed with timeless innovators like Phonte (Little Brother), Blockhead, Ras Kass, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Oh No, Masta Ace, and Bilal Salaam. The result is something that binds current greats with the pioneers who paved the asphalt. It’s both a historical moment and hard as hell.
 
If most compilations are nothing more than a loosely thrown together collection of songs, Persona boasts meticulous focus. These aren’t spare tracks, they’re potent messages and poisonous darts. “Requiem” finds Phonte and Oddisee indicting American racism and Xenophobia with fury and precision. On “Homicide,” yU and Nottz leave blood dripping all over the canvas. There’s “Celebrity Reduction Prayer,” where Open Mike Eagle lampoons fundamentalists and religious zealots over Oddisee’s warm Stevie Wonder keyboards.
 
But there’s ultimately no need to do the track-by-track breakdown. This is an anthology in the most traditional well-curated sense. Turn here if you want to find the best hip-hop artists of their generation in raw and unfiltered form. The bars are brimstone; the beats force your neck to swivel. Through all the discontent, rays of hope begin to emerge. If you remember the feeling you got when you first heard Soundbombing, stop searching. In 2003 I was sitting on my PC downloading countless gigabytes of Underground Hip Hop, a sub-genre of rap I had recently been introduced to. Somehow I came across this record called the "Two Headed Dragon" by Binary Star. After thinking it was really dope, I found another record called, "Reality Check." I can honestly say that record changed my life.. Shortly after being inadvertently introduced to a brand of Hip Hop i'd never before experienced, I joined a message board for One Be Lo fans where I could keep up to date with the artist's movements. In 2004-2005, I was a freshman in high school walking around campus bumping SONOGRAM in my Sony CD player. That's right kids, a CD player. It was around that same time I first met One Be Lo at a show at the California Polytechnic University of Pomona. After that show I would stay in touch with Lo every so often via the internet. Years later, around 2009, I get an e-mail from dude talking about, "Let's hoop." With no hesitation, I scooped Lo up from Senim Silla's crib out in LA, and took him to the infamous RC Sports Center in Rancho Cucamonga. I ran five on five with him, my boy D, my brother, and this kid Josh. It wasn't till after that game of five on five that I showed the One Man Army my music. Though he gave my CD a real listen and had some encouraging words for me, I truly believe it was really my jump shot that earned his respect. A little over 10 years have now passed since that day. I've been blessed to have traveled with One Be Lo on multiple tours, including internationally. We've recorded a few songs, played a few games of basketball, and have had countless hours building as brothers in Islam. Though I have known Lo for 10 years, this is the first time I have him featured on one of my songs. "All Natural," is what occurs when you let relationships build organically. Patience always prospers.. #WeAreFew

Just hours after the relaunch of Payday Records, the iconic record label has released its first song “Our Streets” featuring legendary producer DJ Premier and A$AP Ferg, which is available today via digital retailers everywhere. “Our Streets” is the first song released by hip-hop and EDM pioneer Patrick Moxey’s newly relaunched record label. DJ Premier is reunited with former Gang Starr manager Moxey as the first artist to release music on Payday Records. 

“Our Streets” is a true New York hip-hop track, combining DJ Premier’s signature beats and A$AP Ferg’s versatile style to create a classic, raw and energetic sound. The song marks the first time the legendary DJ and rap star have worked together, despite both being prominent figures of the New York hip-hop scene for years. 

“It's a dream to be able to work with the legendary DJ Premier on this record” stated Ferg. “Preemo has worked with all the NYC hip hop icons and greats - Nas, Biggie, Guru, Hov, KRS-one, and The Lox. Just knowing I was working with him pushed me as an MC.” 

"With Ferg, or anybody I work with, they already know my history so they know that I come from the 90s era” DJ Premier said. “Ferg just automatically said 'Don't do what I've been doing on my albums - I want you to do a Preemo style and let me show I can rap to that,' so I was like 'let's do it.' Everybody was happy off jump - no suggestions, no 'I think we should go this direction' - it was an automatic in, out, done, in one day." 

“Our Streets” is available now, and is the first song released by the newly relaunched Payday Records. Patrick Moxey, who is the President and Founder of Ultra Records, Ultra Music and Ultra International Music Publishing, originally formed Payday Records in New York City in 1992. Payday was the first record label to sign Jay Z, releasing his first single “In My Lifetime” in 1995. Other artists signed to Payday throughout the 90s include Jeru the Damaja, Mos Def (via his first group U.T.D.), Showbiz & A.G., Group Home, Guru, WC and the Maad Circle and more. DJ Premier played an integral role in Payday throughout the 1990s, bringing artists like hip-hop duo Group Home and rapper Jeru the Damaja to Payday for release, and producing a number of the label’s biggest hits including “Come Clean,” and “Supa Star.”
