It’s time for NYC-native and long-time scene supporter, dancer, DJ and music producer Olive T in the Rhythmic Culture podcast series. An early exposure to House and Techno combined with a diverse knowledge and wide span of musical taste lends to her unique DJ style. Known to play music ranging from Hip Hop to club, Jazz to Funk, Disco, Juke, Garage and more, throughout countless venues and over international airwaves. The production side of Olive T varies as well, with single and remix releases on Nervous Records, 2MR, various compilations and through Bandcamp.

AM: Hello! What have ya been up to recently? 

Hi, I'm in the middle of relocating to a new continent & other life changes but I've been steadily working on music throughout the transitional phase.

AM: Tell us a bit about the mix, how and where did you record it? Was there a theme or such? 

I've recorded on a minimal set up with a controller on a bed. I haven't DJ'd or recorded a mix in a while so I viewed it as an exercise to attempt to return to the headspace of creating a mix. There's no theme as I just wanted it to sound consistent and possibly included some of my own music.

AM: We’re loving the sound of your new EP that’s out tomorrow! Tell us a bit about the 2 tracks fro yourself, what was the process + set up behind em?

The ep's that came out very recently this year were made during quarantine/lockdown time in 2020, it was the first time I accepted any labels offers and was able to sit down and finish songs. I read a lot and watched a lot of tutorials in attempts to make them sound like complete ideas. I just wanted to make simple tracks with really good sounding elements, not necessarily made with DJs or clubs in mind at the time.

AM: What have ya been listening to and digging recently?

I've been listening to new HTRK, Redinho, DJ Manny, Teezo Touchdown, Nu Tone's essential mix, and The Time's drum patterns. 

AM: What’s next for ya? 

Getting settled into my future surroundings of Switzerland and hopefully releasing a few remixes and focusing on putting out 1 or 2 ep's next year.

What a honor being invited by great Sven as a guest DJ for his amazing tribute mix session, and having full freedom to select the artist/label to showcase !
Big ups Sven for giving me this opportunity !
Well…to be true, choice was quite easy because 2 artist names came immediately in my mind: EBE and Dana Kelley (aka DKMA, KRIMP, CALLISTO)
Dana was the obvious choice to keep for 2 reasons:
First, he passed away in 2013, so big a loss ! and second, because this Guy had a huge influence on my sound culture when I discovered his tracks back in early 2000’s
We often speak of Larry Heard, Ron Trent, Glenn Underground as the pioneers of Deep House, but we forget to mention Dana…
Maybe it’s because it was impossible to put Dana in a particular genre or sub-genre, so complex was his sound coming straight from outer space…the Guy could either achieve pure House tracks under monikers KRIMP and DKMA, but also intricate Deep House gems full of melancholy and darkness, pushing sometimes the limits to techno tracks on label Catalyst.
Most of his tracks were achieved under label Guidance Recordings and you’ll find bunch of them in this mix.
I’m so proud to have all the vinyls from the Man !
Just listen to Fred P (aka Black Jazz Consortium) and you’ll understand the influences of this great artist I also love.
RIP Dana,I miss you Bro, you’ll always be there.
